Ayden Items, June 21....The two year old child of Leva STOKES fell in a tub of hot water that had been prepared to scour the house and was scalded so badly that it died Wednesday. The accident happened about 2 weeks ago.

Bill Allen Hardee's Daughter Dead

Winterville Items, July 1....Mr. Bill Allen HARDEE's little daughter who was sent to the Kinston hospital for the appendicitis last week, died Sunday without the operation being performed. The patient did not reach the hospital in time for an operation to be of any value.

Paul Harrington Dead

Winterville Items, July 1....After lingering for nearly a week after having the second stroke of paralysis, Mr. Paul HARRINGTON, who lives near here, passed away last Saturday afternoon.  Mr. HARRINGTON was a faithful member of the Free Will Baptist church at Reedy Branch. He was true to his Creator, which made him a good neighbor and a valuable citizen. Mr. HARRINGTON was of the ripe old age of 69 years. He leaves three children, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to mourn his death. His children are Mr. J. F. HARRINGTON, Mrs. Quinnie VINCENT and Mrs. Mary WORTHINGTON all of Winterville. The family have our deepest sympathy in their bereavement.

Alonza Llewellyn Edwards Dead

Alonza Llewellyn EDWARDS, 82, well known Kinstonian, died at his home at 303 East Washington Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday after a lingering illness.  He was a native of Pitt County and a son of the late E. S. and Sarah TRIPP EDWARDS.  He was a retired employee of the Norfolk Southern Railroad Company.  He was a member of Gordon Street Christian Church and a member of Hollywood Camp No. 46 of the Woodmen of the World. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Cornelia COWARD EDWARDS of the home; one son, Atlas L. EDWARDS of Pennsylvania; three daughters, Miss Jesse EDWARDS of Greensboro, Miss Mary Elizabeth EDWARDS of the home, and Mrs. W. H. SPARKS of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. C. L. CANNON of Ayden. Funeral services will be held from the Howard Carter Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday.  Rev. Douglas BELL, his pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.  Members of the Hollywood Camp, WOW, will be active pallbearers. KINSTON - Mrs. Annie C. EDWARDS, 90, died Saturday.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Howard-Carter Funeral Home by Rev. David L. Alexander.  Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Surviving: three daughters, Mrs. Jesse EDWARDS and Mrs. Lester CUDDINGTON of Kinston and Mrs. W. H. SPARKS of Emporia, Va.; a brother, Allen H. Walter R. Whitehurst Sr. Dead

Mr. Walter Randall WHITEHURST Sr., 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. WHITEHURST, a native of the Parmele community, was a longtime resident of Greenville. A veteran of World War II, Mr. WHITEHURST served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division known as the "Screaming Eagles." He was employed for over 30 years as comptroller with Carolina Sales Corp., retiring in 1981. He was a charter member and past president of the Greenville Optimist Club and was a past member of the Greenville Jaycees. In addition, he was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Among his many joys were golfing, fishing and boating. For many years, he enjoyed spending time at his Bayview home with family and friends. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was fondly known as "Daddy Walter" and will be missed by everyone. Mr. WHITEHURST was preceded in death by two sons, John Douglas WHITEHURST and Elmer Bruce WHITEHURST; a brother, E.G. WHITEHURST; and a sister, Melba WHITEHURST. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lottie SCOTT WHITEHURST; three sons, Walter Randall "Randy" WHITEHURST Jr. and wife, Loretta, of Greenville, Daniel Lester "Danny" WHITEHURST and wife, Delores, of Greenville, George Anthony "Tony" WHITEHURST and wife, Pam, of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Thomas WHITEHURST and wife, Janice, of Greenville; two sisters, Dorothy MANNING of Williamston and Frances HARDY of Bethel; and a sister-in-law, Teen TETTERTON of Washington Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Mrs. Nellie FORD NORVILLE, 20, wife of Wiley NORVILLE, died Monday morning at %:30 o'clock at the home near Falkland after a few hours of critical illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the late home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. Charlie HAMILTON, Free Will Baptist minister of Fountain, and burial will follow in the Norville family cemetery near the home. In addition to her husband, she is survived by an infant son, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. ABRAMS of Hertford county; three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd PEADEN, Falkland, Misses Mary Ellen and Virginia ABRAMS of Hertford county; seven brothers, Elisha ABRAMS of the United States army, Wrenn ABRAMS of Macclesfield, and Jimmy, Ernest, Ben, Willie, and Charlie ABRAMS all of Herford county.

Mrs. Ruby Alligood Eubank Dead

Mrs. Ruby ALLIGOOD EUBANK of 1916 Market St., died Monday night.  She was born in New Bern on Dec. 24, 1897, the daughter of the late Robert Edward and Emma HINES ALLIGOOD. Surviving are her son, James Franklin ALLEN of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Kathleen PHILLIPS of Greenville, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Andrews Mortuary by Dr. Arthur WILLIAMS.  Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 o'clock in Ayden Cemetery, Ayden, NC. Mrs. Nellie G. Whichard Worley Dead

Nellie G. WHICHARD WORLEY, 82, of Charleston passed away Dec. 26, 2003, after a short illness. She was born March 3, 1921, a daughter of the late Fernando and Nancy Ann TETTERTON WHICHARD. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. WORLEY, Sr.; brother, William WHICHARD; and sisters, Margaret MORRISON and Barbara WARD.
Nellie was a retired waitress, working in several area restaurants, including: The Sterling, the Charleston House and the Heart o' Town. Nellie was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by all.  Surviving are her daughter,  Lona PETERSON of Charleston; son,  Harry J. WORLEY, Jr. of Rocky Mount, Va.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Styron WHICHARD of Virginia Beach, Va., Goodman WHICHARD of North Carolina, Albert WHICHARD of Wisconsin, Lloyd WHICHARD of Florida; sisters, Elizabeth HICKS and Doris WORTHINGTON, both of North Carolina, Reba CUSICK of Maryland. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, in Glendale Cemetery, South Charleston. Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. W, Charleston, is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Elizabeth MEYER, 69, of Jamestown, S.C., Died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the residence. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin MEYER are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter, Saturday, April 20, 2002, in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, at 12 noon. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel, Friday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock.  Mrs. Meyer was born July 29, 1932, in Pitt County, N.C., a daughter of Warren B. and Mamie COX MCLAWHORN. Surviving are her husband, Alvin MEYER, two daughters, Constance M. MCDANIEL of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Kaye M. Mrs. Malissa A. Barnhill Dead

Mrs. Malissa Annette BARNHILL, 91, died in Miami, Fla., Wednesday morning following a period of declining health. Graveside services and burial will be in Cherry Hill Cemetery Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. The Rev. Robert W. BRADSHAW, pastor of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church will officiate. Surviving are two sons, Donald BARNHILL of Miami, Fla., and Joseph BARNHILL of Bethel; a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn TUCKER of Monroe; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Maude WARD of Norfolk. Mrs. BARNHILL was a member of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church in Greenville, where she formerly lived. She was born and reared near Bethel. She moved to Greenville when a young girl and lived there until the death of her husband, the late Julius H. BARNHILL, who died in 1915. She then moved to Florida in 1920 and had resided there since that time.

MOORE, pastor of the Black Jack Free Will Holiness Church. Interment will follow in Edgewood Cemetery near Galloway Crossroads. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lizzie BRUCE MORGAN, of the home; one daughter, Alma PILGREEN of Grimesland; two sons, Harvey W. MORGAN of Grimesland and Sidney B. MORGAN of Wendell; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha CARLYLE of Rocky Mount, Mrs. Maggie ELKS of Greenville, and Mrs. Carrie DIXON of Grimesland; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Cora Smith Dudley Dead

Mrs. Cora SMITH DUDLEY, 73, died in Pitt General Hospital at 12 noon Wednesday after about three weeks illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Riverside Christian Church near Gardner's Cross Roads at three o'clock Thursday afternoon by the Rev. W. I. BENNETT, Christian minister of Farmville, ands burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the S. G. Wilkerson and Sons Funeral Home until time of services. Mrs. DUDLEY spent all of her life in the Clay Root section of Pitt county. She was married to James DUDLEY of Craven county in 1895. He died in 1934. She was a member of Timothy Christian Church at Gardner's Cross Roads. She had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Calvin JONES in the Clay Root section, for the past few years. Surviving are four sons: R. E. DUDLEY of Jackson, Johnnie and Clarence Ray DUDLEY of Scotland Neck, and Ellis DUDLEY of Vanceboro; two daughters, Mrs. Calvin JONES of Clay Root, and Mrs. Fred ROACH of Ayden; two brothers, E. D. SMITH and Z. V. SMITH of Vanceboro; a sister, Mrs. Matthew HAMILTON of near Gardner's Cross Roads; 23 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Owen Guion Fulcher Dead

Owen Guion FULCHER. 65, of Route 5, New Bern, died today at 3:30 a.m. at Craven County Hospital. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Russell FULCHER; two sons, Billy and Jimmy FULCHER, both of Route 5, New Bern; two daughters, Mrs. Charlie IPOCK of Route 2, Vanceboro and Mrs. Earl SAUNDERS of Route 5, New Bern; one step-daughter; Mrs. Lewis IPOCK of New Bern; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest GILLIKIN of New Bern, Mrs. Staten LIVERMAN of Newport News, Va., and Mrs. M. Charlie Thomas Owens Dead

Charlie Thomas OWENS, 76, of Route 1, Fountain, died Thursday morning at 12:15 in Woodard-Herring hospital following an illness of 11 months. Funeral services will be held Friday (today) afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Farmville Funeral home, Rev. L. B. MANNING officiating. Interment will follow in Queen Anne cemetery, Fountain. Mr. OWENS suffered severe burns 11 months ago and had never fully recovered. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mary Woodten of Wilson, Mrs. Cora JONES and Mrs. J. T. THIGPEN, both of Route 1, Fountain; one brother, Robert OWENS, Route 1, Fountain.

Edward Calvin Buck Dead

Edward Calvin BUCK, 66, died at his home near Drum Hill in Gates county at 7 a.m. today after several weeks illness. Funeral services will be conducted from his home at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon by the Rev. Walter B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville, and burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery near this city. Mr. BUCK lived in the Winterville community until 1920 at which time he moved to Gates county, and he had made his home there since then. Mr. BUCK is survived by his wife Mrs. Mary Lillian BUCK, eight sons, W. W. and Jordan BUCK of the home, Charlie Cruso and Lodis Alders BUCK of Portsmouth, Va., J. E., D. L., C. H., and J. A. BUCK all of Winterville; three daughters, Mrs. Jack JONES and Mrs. J. G. JONES of Winterville and Mrs. Hallett HARRELL of Whaleyville, Va.; two brothers, Frank and C. C. BUCK of the Black Jack community; three sisters, Mrs. Mary MILLS, Mrs. Louis Gus MILLS, and Mrs. Harry SMITH, also of the Black Jack community, 28 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Mr. BUCK was a brother of the late W. A. BUCK of Black Jack, who died September 12.

Mrs. Lissie Hudson Dixon Dead

Mrs. Lissie HUDSON DIXON, 77, died Friday at 1:00 p.m. at her home in the Calico community of Pitt County. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by her pastor, the Rev. Floyd CHERRY, and burial will be in the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Churchyard. Mrs. DIXON spent her early life in the Vanceboro section of Craven County. She was first married to George F. HUDSON of Black Jack, and he died in 1912. She was married to Mr. Willie DIXON in 1915 and until 1959 made her home in the Black Jack and Ayden sections; since that time she had lived at Calico Crossroads section. She was a member of the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Willie DIXON; two daughters, Mrs. Jasper Lee HADDOCK of Black Jack, and Mrs. W. Frank KEEL of the home; and two grandchildren.

W. H. Hinson Dead

W. H. HINSON, 72, died at his home in Winterville at 7:45 o'clock this morning after several months' illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mr. HINSON was born and reared in Greene County. He was married to Miss Hannah JONES of Pitt County in 1895. In 1904 he moved to Pitt County and had lived in this county since that time. He was a member of the Winterville Baptist Church and Winterville Tribe of Red Men. Surviving are his wife; a son, James A. HINSON of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Minnie TAYLOR of near Maury; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Miss Mary Emma STOCKS, 42, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital Thursday morning at 8:15 after seven hours of critical illness. Funeral services will be conducted at Wilkerson Chapel Saturday afternoon at 3:30 by the Rev. Robert B. CRAWFORD, pastor of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church. Miss STOCKS spent most of her life in Pitt County and had been living with her sister, Mrs. Charles W. KEEL of near Winterville. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Laura STOCKS of near Greenville; four sisters, Mrs. Charles W. KEEL of near Winterville, Mrs. Stonewall SIMPKINS of near Greenville, Mrs. Alton TINGEN of Farmville, and Mrs. Major ROBERSON of Lizzie; and three brothers, M. L. STOCKS of near Winterville, Robert Lee STOCKS of near Greenville, and Joe B. STOCKS of Kinston. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Stonewall SIMPKINS of near Greenville in the Red Oak Community.

Charlie Loyd Godley Dead

AURORA - Charlie Loyd GODLEY, 82, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Craven Medical Center. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He served as a Sergeant in the 12th Armored Division in Europe during World War II where he received the Bronze Star. Mr. GODLEY farmed in the Campbell's Creek Community. He served on the Beaufort County Hospital Board, the Aurora School Board, Aurora PTA and was an active member of the Campbell's Creek United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Campbell's Creek United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mack Styron officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his son, C. Loyd GODLEY, Jr. and wife Anne of Clinton, NC; daughters, Maggie Beth ARRUDA of New Bern and Rebecca LIBERTY and husband Michael of New Bern; sisters, Lela G. PAUL of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren, Eleanor HACKNEY, Elizabeth ARRUDA, Anna GODLEY, Matthew PARAMORE, and David GODLEY; one great-grandchild, Madison OTEY. The family will receive friends at the Community Building following the service. Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth HARRIS, 78, died at 6:40 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, Mr. C. T. HARRIS, near Winterville, after a lingering illness of six months. Funeral services will be conducted from the home of C. T. HARRIS tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Elder J. B. ROBERTS, Primitive Baptist minister of Farmville. She was born and reared in Pitt county and was a member of the Hancock Baptist church near Winterville. Surviving are five sons, George W. HARRIS, Thad HARRIS, John HARRIS and Theodore HARRIS, all of the Winterville community, and Joe HARRIS of Greenville; one daughter, Mrs. John MOORE of Simpson; 36 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lena Harding BLAND GODLEY, 84, of New Bern, died Saturday at Craven Regional medical center.  A member of Campbell's Creek United Methodist Church, Mrs. GODLEY was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Methodist Women, and former treasurer of the church.  She will be remembered for her love and generosity to her family and friends, her exceptional cooking skills and her love for gardening and growing roses.  Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Campbell's Creek United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mack STYRON officiating.  Burial will be in Campbell's Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. J. C. GRIFFIN PASSES AWAY AT GRIFTON - Funeral for Prominent Citizen Was Conducted This Afternoon:  J. C. GRIFFIN, member of a prominent Pitt County family for whom the town of Grifton was named died at his home in Grifton yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock.  He was 60 years of age.  Although he had been in ill health for several months, his death came as as a distinct shock to the entire community. Funeral services were conducted from his late home this afternoon by Rev. Perry CASE, pastor of the Church of Christ, and interment was made in the Grifton Cemetery.  Members of the Masonic order attended the funeral in a body and had charge of the final rites at the grave.  Mr. GRIFFIN was born and reared in the Grifton community, and had acquired considerable farm property in Lenoir, Greene and Pitt counties.  He was the son of the late Cicero and Eliza MCCOTTER GRIFFIN.  He was married in 1919 to Mrs. Gertrude GREENE BLAND, who preceded him to the grave several years ago. In addition to his activities in connection with development of agriculture, Mr. GRIFFIN was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Grifton, and prominently identified with other business organizations of the community.  He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge.  He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Addie GRIFFIN BROOKS of Grifton and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Joseph L. STOCKS, 67, of 110 East Eighth Street, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital at 3:45 Wednesday afternoon following several days of critical illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel at 3:30 Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Ray GILES, pastor of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, assisted by the Rev. Douglas R. WOODWORTH, Methodist minister of Ayden, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Masonic rites will be held by members of the Greenville Masonic Lodge, No. 284, A.F. and A.M. Mr. STOCKS was born and reared in the Cox's Mill community. He lived in Washington for eighteen years prior to moving to Greenville in 1938. He was a retired salesman and farmer. His wife, Mrs. Annie TEEL STOCKS, died in 1958. Mr. STOCKS was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church, the Greenville Masonic Lodge, No. 284, A.F. and A.M., New Bern Consistory No. 3, a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of Sudan Temple. Surviving is a half-sister, Mrs. Lissie HILL of Raleigh.

Mrs. Gurley's husband, T. D. GURLEY, is executive vice president of industrial relations and safety departments at Carolina Freight Carriers Corp.  She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert HORTON.  Survivors include her husband; a son Donald H. GURLEY of Little Rock, Ark; two brothers, Robert G. HORTON of Boca Raton, Fla., Ted R. HORTON of Greenville, SC; five sisters, Mrs. R. L.  PROMINENT REAL ESTATE AGENT PASSES WEDNESDAY:  James Thomas HARRIS, 76, prominent Eastern Carolina farmer and real estate agent, died at Kafer Memorial hospital at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning after a short illness. Funeral service for Mr. HARRIS will be held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock from the chapel of the Willis Funeral home with Rev. W. C. FOSTER of the Broad Street Christian church officiating.  Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.  Mr. HARRIS was the son of the late James W. and Nannie CLARK HARRIS of Granville county where he was born.  He was elected mayor of Macclesfield in 1903 and in 1930 served on the Craven County Board of Commissioners. During his career as a farmer and as a real estate agent he was outstanding in Eastern North Carolina.  He was largely responsible for the development of the Riverview Park residential area in Bridgeton where he resided prior to his death.  Mr. HARRIS was a member of the Elks Club of New Bern and a member of the Broad Street Christian church. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. T. J. HARRIS of New Bern; and two sisters, Mrs. James RUSSELL of Bridgeton, and Mrs. J. M. WILSON, NC --Mary BLAND HUFF HARWELL of The Landing of Wilson left us Thursday September 3, 2009 at 1:55 p.m. for the mansion that Jesus has prepared for her. While we will all miss her deeply we know that she is no longer laboring so hard to breath as she has of late. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Myrtle HUFF, her sister, Gilda HUFF PADGETT and brother Brad HUFF. We all can be comforted in knowing that Mary will be reunited with all of her family and friends that have gone on before, especially her beloved grandson, William Chadwick “Chad” HARWELL who went to be with the Lord in 1984 at the age of 12. The sadness that all of us feel is assuaged knowing that her suffering is over. Tears that we shed today are tears of sadness because she is no longer with us here in our earthly home. But in a greater sense they are tears of happiness because of the joy we all feel because of the sacrifice that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, endured so that we can have eternal life. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Horace M. HARWELL, Sr.; sons Horace M. “Choco” HARWELL Jr. and wife, Ellen and William H. “Bill” HARWELL and wife, Barbara. She will also be missed by four grandchildren, Mary Lisa HARWELL of Charlotte, Daniel Monroe HARWELL of High Point, Brian REID and wife, Gen of Mooresville, and Heather HUXLEY and husband, Huck of Charlotte, nieces and nephews, Martha Ann, Linda, Bo, Cathy and Jimmy.  Mom spoke lovingly of you often. Mary was so proud of her five great-grandchildren, Davis, Hannah, Ansley and Brooks REID; and a very special light in Mary’s life for the last 14 months was Reid Owen HUXLEY. God sent you to us and you are truly a blessing, especially for Mary. Mary was loved by many others of her extended family; Mary Jo and Linda, the daughters that she loved as her own. Their mom, Josephine and Mary were long time friends and Mary often spoke so lovingly of their enduring love and friendship. Michelle and Daniel, Mary thought of you as her grandchildren. LAKELAND - Mr. Charles C. BAKER, Jr., 86, died April 20, 2011 of heart failure. Mr. BAKER was born in Fountain, NC on August 7, 1924. He served in the Army during WWII and was discharged as a Staff Sgt. in 1945. Mr. Baker resided in Lakeland since 1955. He retired from Cannon Buick in 1990 after 35 years of service as Parts Manager. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gerda; and half-brother, Seth MCKEEL. He is survived by his children, Ronald C. (Teresa) BAKER, Sr. of Tallahassee, FL, Betsy (Philip) CARL of Lakeland and Larry W. (Mary) BAKER of Raymond, MS; grandchildren, Ronnie C. HELLEN - Funeral services for William Lawrence HELLEN, 60 year old Atlantic Coast Line railroad employee and well-know sportsman who died at James Walker Memorial hospital Friday morning following a long illness, will be conducted from the chapel of Ward Funeral home this morning at 11 o'clock.  The Rev. A. J. RUSSELL will officiate and interment will be in Kinston, N. C.  Mr. HELLEN was employed at the Coast Line for approximately 30 years and made his home at the local Young Men's Christian association on Market street.  He was a member of the board of directors of the New Hanover Fishing club and a well known sports enthusiast. FRED HINES DIES WHILE AT OFFICE -    Insurance Man Victim of Heart Attack. Death Comes About Thirty Minutes After Sudden Illness:  Funeral services for Fred HINES, 49, well known insurance man, who died suddenly shortly after noon Monday while at his office in the National Loan & Exchange bank building, will be held at 11 o'clock this morning at the First Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. R. A. LAPSLEY, Jr., D.D., Pastor, assisted by Dr. S. C. BYRD, president of Chicora College.  Interment will follow in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Hines was working in his office about noon Monday when he was seized with an attack of heart trouble.  A physician was summoned but he expired in about 80 minutes after being taken ill. He was regarded as an insurance man of unusual ability and recognized as an expert in his line.  For the last 25 years he had been connected with the Southern States Life Insurance Company of Atlanta and at the time of his death was general agent of the Columbia territory for that company.  His death has caused great sorrow among many friends and business associates.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. Besides his widow, Mrs. Bernice K. HINES, he is survived by three sons, Matthew Frederick HINES of Charlotte, Leonard Raymond HINES, a student at the University of North Carolina, and Wilmer Moore HINES of Columbia, and a brother, Peter HINES of Wilson, N.  Mrs. Elsie HINES Dies At Her Ayden Home:  Mrs. Elsie HINES, widow of the late Mr. J. S. HINES, died about midday on Tuesday at her home in Ayden.  Mrs. HINES was in the 80th year of her age.  For practically 50 years had been an invalid, and the last two years confined to her room.  While hardly knowing since the early years of her life what it was to have a well day, she nevertheless bore her afflictions with Christian patience, and by her devotion made her life a benediction to those about her.  She was a member of the Christian church and passed away with an abiding faith in her Savior. The funeral took place at Ayden Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives.  Mrs. HINES is survived by seven children, all of whom had been summoned to her bed side and were with her when the end came.  They are Mrs. J. T. HARRIS of New Bern; Mrs. Emma ALLIGOOD of Ayden; Misses Lena and Lizzie HINES of Ayden; Mr. Fred HINES of Columbia, S.C.; and Mrs. W. M. CARTER of Baltimore, and County Solicitor P. R. DEATH CLAIMS PITT ATTORNEY - P. R. HINES Succumbs After Six Months of Ill Health:  P. R. HINES Succumbs After Six Months Of Ill Health: Peter R. HINES, 55, died at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. T. H. BOWEN near Ballard's last night at 10:30 o'clock from a lingering illness.  He had been in declining health for the past six months and was confined to his bed since November. Mr. HINES was born in Ayden March 4, 1882, the son of the late James S. and Elsie BLAND HINES.  He had spent his entire life in Pitt County. He attended preparatory school in Bethel under Professor McWhorter, later attending Richmond Medical College in 1903 and 1904.  He graduated in law at Wake Forest college and was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1916, coming to Pitt county to practice his profession.  He was County Solicitor for two terms.  He was a member of the Pitt County Bar Association ad St. Peter's Catholic Church of Greenville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Charles GABLE from the home.  Burial will be in Ayden Cemetery.  Mr. HINES is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Fannie Mae BOWEN of Ballards and one son, George Stancil HINES, five years of age; three sisters, Mrs. W. M. CARTER, Mrs. Emma ALLIGOOD and Miss Lena HINES, all of Ayden.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Active pall bearers will be; Julius BROWN, John B. BAKER, James C. WORSLEY, David M. WILLIFORD, C. V.  Mrs. Fannie Mae BOWEN HINES, 86, died Tuesday at her home.  Her funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by the Revs. RATCLIFF, Jr. and Wayne KING.  Burial will be in the Ayden Cemetery. A native of Greene County, Mrs. Hines had lived in the Ballard's Crossroads community of Pitt County most of her life.  She operated Hines Station from 1938 until her retirement in 1968.  She was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Albion Lee MOORE, Charles BRINKLEY, and George Stancill HINES, all of Route 1, Greenville, 11 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.  At other times, they will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Stancill HINES, Route 1, Box 606, Greenville. TRIBUTE OF RESPECT---Died, in this city, on Monday morning, April 15, 1889, Mrs. Josephine BLAND JONES, in her 27th year. It was indeed sad to see one so young taken from a loving husband and fond parents, but the bereaved ones are comforted with the assurances that "their loss was her gain." All that a skillful physician and loving hands could do was done, but the decree had gone forth; the messenger sent and the call made for her to come up higher. As gentle as a summer breeze, the spirit bid the body adieu, and was wafted into the heaven of rest. Thus the first link was taken from the family chain of loved ones, to make heaven, if possible, more attractive to those that are left. The aching and suffering body is at rest, and the soul rejoicing over the victory won Oh! The anguish of the loving ones. The hearts bleed in sorrow with no eye but that of God to penetrate. Fond husband and parents, loving brothers and sisters, do not rebel against God, nor question His providence, but be reconciled and say "not my will, but thine, O Lord, be done." and the cloud that now over shadows you, will be pulled away and you will think of her and say she is not dead, "only gone before." and entered into the sweet realm of rest. Contributed by Bill Bland

Capt. Nicholas W. Jones Dead

CAPTAIN JONES DIES ON SUNDAY – LOCAL HOSPITAL. End Came While The Patient Was Undergoing Operation For Cancer: Capt. Nicholas W. JONES died yesterday afternoon shortly before 3 o'clock, while on the operating table at a local hospital. He had been in poor health during the summer and had known for some time that he had cancer but not until a few days ago did he give up his work. Saturday he went to a local hospital for treatment. The funeral service will be held at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Centenary Methodist church by the pastor, Dr. J. W. HARRELL. Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery. The deceased was born in Lenoir county on September 19, 1861. He had he lived, he would have been 64 years old on his next birthday this month. In 1888, he moved to New Bern and became president of the Independent Steamship company. From that time on throughout his life he was continuously connected with the steamboat business in this section. Surviving him are his wife, who was visiting in Baltimore at the time of his demise and two daughters, Mrs. Earl C. FRYMOYER and Mrs. Hugh D. SPENCE both of Baltimore. Mrs. JONES and Mrs. SPENCE arrived in the city this morning. Mrs. FRYMOYER is on a motor trip and relatives have so far been unable to advise her of her father's death. Contributed by Bill Bland

Funeral services for Charles Franklin JOYNER, 82, were conducted at the Epworth Methodist Church this afternoon and interment was in the church cemetery, Rev. W. R. CROWDER, Vanceboro Methodist minister, conducted the services and Masonic rites were rendered at the grave by the Vanceboro Masonic lodge. Mr. JOYNER died at his home near here Tuesday after ten weeks of critical illness. The son of the late Benjamin F. and Elizabeth SMITH JOYNER, he was born and reared in the Ayden community. He was married to Mary Elizabeth BLAND in 1890, and he came to Craven county to live in 1909. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife; five sons, L. Roy JOYNER, David W. JOYNER, B. Howard JOYNER and J. William JOYNER, all of near Vanceboro, and Robert L. JOYNER of New Bern; three daughters, Mrs. Laura SIMMONS and Mrs. Ellis PETERSON of near Vanceboro, and Mrs. Ralph B. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC and had received her graduate degree from East Carolina College. She had been a resident of Craven County since 1930 and worked as a public school teacher and guidance counselor for the Craven County Schools. She had taught at Farm Life High School, Jasper High School, Fort Barnwell High School and West Craven High School. She retired in 1973 after 44 years of service. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. Funeral is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vern WOMACK officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by one son, John W. JOYNER Jr. of Darien, Ga.; one daughter, Jill JOYNER BERRY of Southport; and two grandchildren. Mr. CARSON is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie WARD CARSON, a daughter, Mrs. Sidney CARR, of Farmville, and three sons, D. C. and R. R. CARSON of Bethel, and Robert L. CARSON, of Houston, Texas. KINSTON - Bertha Thomas "Bert" LEE, 84, of 842 Westminster Lane, died Tuesday, October 4. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. T. Leslie LEE. "Bert" was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kinston, where she served as a deacon and elder. She was awarded an honorary membership in the Women of the Church in 1963, and served as treasurer of Albemarle Presbytery. At the time of her husband's death in 1949, she was president of the Auxiliary to the North Carolina Medical Society, and was given an honorary life membership in this organization in 1964. She served two terms as treasurer of the Lenoir County Historical Society Association, and was an active member and president of the Lenoir County Unit of the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 6, from First Presbyterian Church of Kinston, with Dr. Robert W. RATCHFORD officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Lee JENKINS; a son, Thomas Leslie LEE, Jr.; three grandchildren, John T. B. JENKINS, III, Patricia Lee JENKINS and Thomas Richard LEE, and a brother, James B. Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Friday afternoon at two o'clock by the Rev. Walter B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville, and burial will be in the Laughinghouse family cemetery near Cox's Mill. Mrs. STALLINGS, daughter of the late Mrs. Ada MILLS and Ed MILLS of near Ayden, was born and reared in the Cox's Mill community, and spent all her life in Pitt County. She was a member of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband; a son, Henry N. She was a retired medical receptionist, and had worked as a florist for some years. She was the sister of the late Dr. Thomas Leslie LEE. Graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westview Cemetery by Dr. Thomas HAMILTON. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs, Albert COWPER (Virginia), of Kinston, and 2 grandchildren. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Kinston or the Cancer Fund. Final rites were held yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock for C. R. WILLOUGHBY, prominent farmer of the Bellarthur community, who died Monday night at his home following three weeks of critical illness. Rev. Gilbert DAVIS, Christian minister of Bellarthur, officiated. Burial followed in the Willoughby graveyard on the Rasberry farm near Bellarthur. Mr. WILLOUGHBY was born in Pitt county June 19, 1871, and spent most of his life in the community in which he died. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist church at Bellarthur. He is survived by his second wife and one son, Lindbergh WILLOUGHBY, and the following children by a former marriage: Mrs. Richard NICHOLS of Bellarthur, Mrs. Fred DAWSON of Richmond, Va., and Robert WILLOUGHBY of Conway; also a half brother, Joe WILLOUGHBY of Bellarthur.

Mr. JOHNSTON, son of the late Franklin and Susan DIXON JOHNSTON, was born in Greene county and had lived in Greenville since 1878. Mr. J. B. DIXON, 72, of Biloxi, MS, died Sunday, January 9, 2011, in Biloxi. He passed away peacefully at home after a very long illness. Mr. DIXON was born September 16, 1938 in Pitt County, NC and had been a resident of Biloxi for the past 36 years. He was a retired U. S. Air Force MSgt. and also retired from Charter Oil and Gulf South Petroleum. Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Eunice DIXON; sister, Bertha and brother, Harold DIXON, Jr. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years, Pat HOWE DIXON; daughters, Judy MURPHY and her husband, Murf, Joyce DIXON and her fiance, Paul GAUTHE', Brenda SEYMOUR and her husband, Dr. Tim SEYMOUR, and Beverly BRAND and her husband, Jeff; grandchildren, Mike DIXON, Matt COMSTOCK, Kaeley GEMMILL, Courtney BRAND, Tim SEYMOUR, II and Dino too; and his sisters, Alice PETERSON and Nellie PHIPPS.  J.B.'s greatest pastime was tinkering on his 1958 Ford pick-up. He will be sadly missed by many family members and friends. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, in Biloxi where friends may visit one hour before service time. DR. T. LESLIE LEE DIES OF HEART ATTACK SUNDAY - Prominent Surgeon and Obstetrician Passes at 10:30 P.M. At His Home; Funeral Rites at Church 11 Tuesday:  Dr. Thomas Leslie LEE, 48, prominent obstetrician and gynecologist of the staff of Memorial General Hospital here, succumbed to a heart attack at his home at College Street and Roundtree Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. He had not been ill, but had returned a few hours earlier from a weekend trip to Morehead City.The funeral will be from the First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with interment in Westview Cemetery. His pastor, Rev. Thomas H. HAMILTON, will officiate. Elders in the church will be active pallbearers. Dr. LEE was a native of Kinston, a son of Mrs. Dora BLAND LEE and the late T. R. LEE. He was educated in local schools and at Washington and Lee University. He took his medical work at the Medical College of Virginia. He had been associated with the local hospital since completion of his internship. Dr. LEE took his intern work at Sheltering Arms Hospital in Richmond, Va., and began his practice in the Kinston Clinic here in July of 1926. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a diplomat of the American Board of Gynecology and Obstetrics. He would have completed a six-year term on the State Board of Medical Examiners next May.  He was a member of the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecology Society. He was pioneer in the field of cancer work. He was chairman of the executive committee of the N. C. Division of American Cancer Society. He served as chairman of the Cancer Committee of the State Medical Society, and was active in several statewide campaigns for that society. He was a prime mover in the founding of the Area Cancer Clinic in Kinston and served for a time as chairman of the Lenoir County Cancer Society. In addition to serving as president of the Lenoir Medical Society, Dr. LEE was president of the Seaboard Medical Society and active in both district and State societies for many years. He supported every worthwhile cause for the advancement of medicine in the county and State and was interested in civic and community affairs as well. Dr. LEE was active as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, was a director of the Commercial National Bank here, was a member of the Elks, the Kiwanis Club and other organizations. Surviving are his mother, his widow, Mrs. Bertha THOMAS LEE; two children, Patricia and Thomas L. LEE, Jr., of the home; one sister, Mrs. Ina Mae Lee of Kinston, and a niece, Mrs. Albert W. Thomas R.  LEE, 63, died suddenly at his home about 4 o'clock this morning from a heart attack. He had apparently been in good health until he was stricken yesterday, and the end was not expected. Mr. LEE is survived by a widow and two children, Dr. T. Leslie LEE and Mrs. Ina MAE LEE, and one grandchild. His daughter was visiting at Danville, Va., when the end came. She is expected to arrive by motor some time today. Mr. LEE was well and favorably known here. He was a consistent member of the First Presbyterian Church and an elder, and was also superintendent of the Sunday school. He was connected with the wholesale house of Jeffreys & Sons. Edward H."Pete" CORBETT, of Elgin, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the age of 80, our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, (Pap-pa), brother, nephew and friend left this world to be with his loving Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ivy and Dippy CORBETT, sister, Carrie Bell LITTLE and brothers, William and Walter CORBETT. Pete was born on February 7, 1931, in Fountain, NC and honorably served his country for twenty years in the United States Air Force, retiring with a rank of Tech Sergeant. For twenty-four years, he was supervisor at Payne Brick Company, and then for eleven years he drove for Wallace Lundgren dealership. Pete was a fine Christian man who loved the Lord. He belonged to the First Baptist Church of Elgin where he served on the Building and Lord's Supper Committees and also served as usher. Pete also belonged to the Elgin Masonic Lodge from which he received his Master Mason fifty year pen that he cherished along with his Bible. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, son Gary and wife Jill, grandchildren Zoe and Jeffrey; daughter, Donna LANE and granddaughter Wendy HOLT and sons Steven and Patrick; grandsons David HOLT and wife Mariana and son Tristan; and Jason HOLT and wife Lisa and daughter Marissa and son Ryan; sister Annie Laura JOHNSON and sister and husband Nannie Lee and H.P. NORMAN, plus many many dear friends. We wish to acknowledge Amanda AMAYA, Tina BALLMAN, and Angela BELCHER and other members of Austin Hospice, all of whom were amazing and taught us all so much. PETERSON, 88, of Vanceboro, died Saturday at Craven Regional Medical Center.  He is a native of the Epworth community and lived his early life there.  He resided in Vanceboro as an adult and was active in farming in the Epworth and the Vanceboro communities.  He managed Peterson's Family Store from 1923 until his retirement due to ill health in 1988. He was a member of the Vanceboro United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for more than 40 years.  He was a current and charter member of the Vanceboro Rotary Club.  He served on the Craven County Board of Education for more than 20 years and was director of the Vanceboro branch of Wachovia Bank and Trust Company for more than 30 years.  Funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Vanceboro United Methodist Church with the Revs. Graham ROYAL and A. P. HILL officiating.  Burial will be in the Epworth Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Dollie P. PETERSON; one son J. L. Vanceboro, NC - Bryan C. PETERSON, 83, died at his home in Vanceboro Wednesday afternoon following several years' illness.  Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Vanceboro Methodist Church by the pastor, Rev. H. B. JONES.  Burial will be in Epworth Methodist churchyard. Mr. PETERSON spent his life in the Vanceboro community of Craven county and before his retirement was a merchant and farmer.  He was a member of Vanceboro Methodist Church, having served on the Board of Stewards and the Board of Trustees many years.  His wife, the former Annie BLAND, died in 1954. Surviving are a son, Jather L. PETERSON of Vanceboro; a daughter, Miss Grace PETERSON of the home; two brothers, Norman C. VANCEBORO - Dollie PARKER PETERSON, 86, of Vanceboro, died Saturday morning at her home.  The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Vanceboro United Methodist Church by the Rev. Graham ROYALL.  Burial will be in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery. PETERSON, who had lived in Vanceboro for 60 years, was a member of the Vanceboro United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.  She had also been active in the Vanceboro Home Demonstration Club for many years. She is survived by one daughter; Ann PETERSON SIMRIL of Raleigh; one son; J. L. PETERSON , Jr. of Atlanta; three sisters, Lottie OGLESBY of Morehead City, Mary Belle RHUE of Cape Carteret, Pauline BRAY of Swansboro; one brother; Leon PARKER of Newport; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Zeb Vance IPOCK, aged 56, died at his home near Vanceboro yesterday at 12:30 p.m., following several months of declining health. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 3:30 this afternoon by the Rev. Bob HODGES, and burial followed in the family cemetery near the home. Mr. IPOCK is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ada IPOCK; two sons, Gentry and Vance IPOCK, of the home; and one brother, Jack IPOCK of Vanceboro. Also one sister, Mrs. Stella WIGGINS of Jacksonville, and a grandson, David Gentry. Mr. IPOCK was engaged in farming and had spent most of his life in the community in which he died.

EPWORTH - Ellis J. PETERSON, 80, died Friday at 9:15 a.m. in Pitt Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from Epworth United Methodist Church by Rev. C. R. MCCULLEN and Rev. Ellis BEDSWORTH.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and spent all his life in the Epworth Community of Craven County.  He was a farmer. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lyndel JOYNER PETERSON; a son, E. Dr. Jack Oliver CARSON, 84, passed away in the loving arms of his family on Thursday, February 3, 2011. The funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, at 2 PM, in the Grifton United Methodist Church with visitation following. Burial will be private. Dr. CARSON was born on July 26, 1926, in Bethel, North Carolina. He was the son of Lillie Clorinda BUNTING and Don Columbus CARSON, Sr. He attended school in Bethel and Greenville during his early years. After graduating from Greenville High School at the age of 16, he attended Duke University. He subsequently served two years in the United Stated Navy. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his undergraduate degree and his two-year medical degree. His medical training was completed at the University of Maryland. He practiced medicine in Grifton for 43 years. Dr. CARSON was an active member of the Grifton United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards, and on many other committees. He was a founding member of The Grifton Country Club, president of the Pitt County Medical Society, and served on the Pitt County School Board for several years. He was an avid reader and bridge player, enjoyed traveling, and was a devout sports enthusiast, attending all home Carolina football games, cheering for his beloved Tar Heels. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don C. CARSON, Jr., and his wife, Daisy Lee, of Bethel. He is survived by his dear wife of 55 years, Connie HILL CARSON; three daughters, Cynthia Carson GILLIAM, of Raleigh, Janet CARSON RICCIARELLI and husband, Paul, and Amy Carson QUINN and husband, Brady, both of Greenville; his six grandchildren, Tyler, Carson, Michael, Caroline, Sarah Carson, and Robbie, who were the joy of his life; a brother, John Royal BUNTING II and his wife, Joyce, of Bethel; and several nieces and nephews. PETERSON, 90, died Tuesday, September 17, 1996 in Craven Regional Medical Center.  The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Vanceboro United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roger COPE.  Burial will be in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery. Miss PETERSON, a native of the Epworth community of Craven County, lived most of her life in Vanceboro. She was a graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College and taught school in Grimesland and then in Vanceboro for several years.  Prior to her retirement, she was active in the daily operation of B. C. Peterson and Son Store at Vanceboro.  She was a member of the Vanceboro United Methodist Church, where she was formerly active in the youth ministry and later in the Ada SMITH Ladies Circle. Surviving are a niece, Ann P. SIMRIL of Raleigh; a nephew, J. L. Snow Hill - Henry Bryan PITTMAN, Sr. 72, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday of a heart attack at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.  He was born in Craven County on April 7, 1882 and is the son of Mrs. C. M. PITTMAN and the late Mr. PITTMAN of Clarks.  He was a resident of Snow Hill for the past 27 years and employed by Quinn-Miller and Company for the past 23 years.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday from Edwards Funeral Home in Snow Hill, with burial in the Maplewood Cemetery in Kinston. He was a veteran of World War II and worked for 45 years as a salesman with Swift & Company. He also ran a tax preparation business in Kinston for 30 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family and a friend to all who knew him. He had a keen sense of humor, a twinkle in his eye and a story that would always leave you smiling. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maude WEST WHITLEY; four sons, Jack West WHITLEY and wife, Linda, of New Bern, Charles Beverly WHITLEY and wife, Fran, of Chocowinity, Robert Elliott WHITLEY and wife, Mary Page, of Kinston, David Henry WHITLEY and wife, Joan, of New Bern; and a daughter, Martha Gray WHITLEY SMITH and husband, Ed, of Kinston; a brother, Donald WHITLEY, of Golden, Colo.; two sisters, Maureen UHDE of Louisville, Ky. and Olive WOODY of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. NORVILLE, a native of Fountain, was the son of the late Richard Tilman and Martha WORTHINGTON NORVILLE. He attended schools in the community and Oak Ridge. He graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1930 with a bachelor's degree and received his law degree  in 1932, after having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and honorary societies. Surviving are his widow, the former Marion Grace O'BOYLE; one son, L. T. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cassie Lee SUTTON SMITH, to whom he was married in 1928; a son, James P. Henry Bryan PITTMAN, Jr., 78, of Black Mountain, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 30, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with emphysema and lung cancer.  A native of New Bern, he was a son of the late Henry Bryan PITTMAN, Sr., and Rosa Lee BLAND PITTMAN and was also preceded in death by his brother, Alvin PITTMAN. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, he attended and graduated from N.C. State College and worked in the furniture industry until his retirement. A former president of the Black Mountain Chamber of Commerce, he was a member of Black Mountain United Methodist Church and served on many committees over the years. He was an avid fisherman.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marjorie PITTMAN; devoted children, Ken PITTMAN and Ginger MCGEE and her husband, John, all of Winston-Salem; beloved grandchildren, Mitchell PITTMAN, Hannah PITTMAN, and Matthew MCGEE.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8, at Black Mountain United Methodist Church with the Reverend Gerald COLLINS officiating. His family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church and request that memorials be made to the American Lung Association, P.O.  J. S. PITTMAN DIED HERE YESTERDAY AT ST. JOHN'S:  Mr. J. S. PITTMAN, formerly of the St. John's community, died from paralytic stroke yesterday at two p.m.  Mr. PITTMAN was a prominent farmer, about 60 years old, had been twice married, and several children by both unions survive.  He was a member of the Christian Church and was well and favorably known over a large section.  Funeral services will be held on arrival of members of the family who are living in distant states, possibly Wednesday afternoon at St. John's cemetery. His first wife was the daughter of the late Theophilus BLAND, the children of this union are all grown to maturity.  His second and surviving wife was the daughter of the late John HOLLOWELL.  They have several smaller children by this union. Contributed by Bill Bland

Leon Alton PITTMAN, 60, of 1303 Howard Street, died in a local hospital at 5:45 a.m. Friday. He was the son of the late Joseph Sharp and Mary BLAND PITTMAN.  He was a drug clerk and an elder of Gordon Street Christian Church.  Funeral services will be conducted from Gordon Street Christian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday.  Rev. Fred MCCOUN, pastor at the church will officiate.  Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mildred FULCHER PITTMAN; one son, L. A. PITTMAN Jr., of Reading, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald E. PETTY of Enid, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. W. C. DIXON of Kinston; one brother, Walter PITTMAN of Grifton; his stepmother, Mrs. Lena PITTMAN of Penderlea; four half-brothers, Larry, Charles and Quincy, all of Penderlea, and Howard PITTMAN of Greenville; three half-sisters, Mrs. Sol MCGLOHON of Penderlea, Mrs. Simon BURNEY of Ayden and Mrs. Reuben HOLT of Charlotte; one grandson, R. E. PETTY II. Pallbearers will be J. C. KENNEDY, Jerry LEATHERWOOD, Earl TYNDALL, Robert E. YOUTH FOUND DEAD IN CONTENTEA SECTION, SHOT WOUND IN CHEST:  Robert Earl PITTMAN, 21, a son of the late J. S. PITTMAN, of the Contentnea section, who had been missing from his home since early Christmas Eve, was found dead yesterday afternoon by boys hunting rabbits in a field not far from the home of Henry STOKES, with whom he lived.  He had a gaping gunshot wound in the chest. Corner Farley GARNER viewed the body and deemed an inquest unnecessary. PITTMAN is believed to have been the victim of his own gun when it was fired accidentally while hunting.  He was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Pitt County, at 2:30 today.  Rev. Perry CASE, minister of the Disciples at Grifton, officiated. PITTMAN left his home Tuesday morning and did not return.  Nothing was thought about this, as he frequently visited in the neighborhood and spent the night with relatives or friends.  The decedent is survived by a brother, Alton PITTMAN, employed at Marston's drug store here, and numerous other relatives.  He was a grand-nephew of the late Mrs. Patsy TUCKER.  PITTMAN's parents are dead. Contributed by Bill Bland

Kinston, Dec. 11. - A. T. REDDITT, a well-to-do broker who for many years has been a leader in politics in East Carolina, fell dead in a physician's office on Queen street late today. Apoplexy was stated to be the cause of his death.  He was 48 years old and is survived by his wife. He was a native of Beaufort County. Mrs. Sarah BLAND REDDITT, 81, widow of A. T. REDDITT, died at her home at 201 West Peyton Avenue at 8 p.m. Tuesday.  The funeral will be held from the residence at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with interment in Maplewood Cemetery.  Her pastor, Rev. Howard G. DAWKINS of the First Baptist Church; Rev. Thomas H. HAMILTON of the First Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Edwin F. MOSELEY, rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church will officiate. Mrs. REDDITT was a daughter of the late C. C. and Elizabeth BOYD BLAND.  Her husband died about 37 years ago.  She was long a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, which she attended regularly until a few weeks ago. Edith Ann RILEY, 62, of 4422 Old Cherry Point Road, New Bern passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Craven Regional Medical Center.  Ann was the daughter of the deceased Rev. HARTLEY and Mae BLAND of New Bern. She was a graduate of New Bern High School and Watts Nursing School in Durham, N.C. After receiving her nursing accreditation, she married Bobby Miller RILEY of Hillsborough, N.C. The two lived first in Burlington before moving their young family to Greensboro where she served as president of the Greensboro Junior Women's Club. She volunteered with church youth groups and worked as a model. The family relocated to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. After Bobby passed away there in 1974, Ann and her two children returned home to New Bern. Ann was employed as a nurse in New Bern before retiring. She was an avid collector and known as a person of great spirit.  A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Cotten Chapel. She is survived by two children, Lisa RILEY BAKER of Aspen, Colo., and Michael Zane RILEY of Wilson, N.C.; two grandchildren, Phoenix and Skylar RILEY of Wilson, N.C.; her sister, Rena BLAND REGISTER of New Bern, N.C.; and her brother, Marvin Hartley "Bud" BLAND Jr. of Morganton, N.C. SEVEN SPRINGS -- Elbert Cassidy ROUSE, 70, of Seven Springs, died Saturday.  A service of remembrance will be held tonight at 7 at Rouse Funeral Home. Interment will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Elbert was born Sept.7, 1938, in Lenoir County to the late Elbert Leslie ROUSE and Gatha Lee PHILLIPS ROUSE. He was a retired electrical engineer with Waukesha Electrical Systems formerly known as Hevi-Duty and operated Tri-Co. Drafting Service.  Elbert touched many young lives through baseball and was instrumental in establishing Wayne County Babe Ruth Baseball. He served on the board of directors for North Carolina Babe Ruth Baseball and later Eastern North Carolina Babe Ruth Baseball. Elbert enjoyed quail hunting and field trials.
Elbert is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan R. ROUSE; son, Joel Elbert "Joey" ROUSE and wife, Donna, of Goldsboro; daughter, Leesa ROUSE of Pikeville; two grandchildren, Joely Alexandra ROUSE and Jenna Elizabeth ROUSE; two brothers, William Henry ROUSE of Illinois and Jimmy C. Donald WAGNER, pastor of the Gatesville Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. The body will be taken from the home to the church one hour prior to the time of service. Mr. WILLIAMS, son of the late John R. and Lou BRAXTON WILLIAMS, spent most of his life in Pitt and Martin Counties and for the past seven years and lived in Gatesville. He was a policeman and a member of the Peace Officer's Club of Gates County. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. A. Col. Cecil Lynn Eason, Jr. Dead

NEW BERN - Col. Cecil Lynn EASON, Jr., 63, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, peacefully at home after a very long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Jan. 21, 1948, to Cecil Lynn EASON and Nan MOORE EASON in Farmville, N.C. He graduated from Farmville High School in 1966 and N.C. State University in 1970 with a degree in History. Colonel EASON entered the U.S. Air Force on November 18, 1970, through the Officers Training School program (OTS) at Lackland AFB, Texas. Upon graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant he attended Navigation School at Mather A.F.B. in Sacramento, Calif., where he learned navigation/flying skills for his career as a navigator. He graduated with top honors. While in Sacramento he met his wife of 39 1/2 years, JoNette and for the next 25 years they would make the Air Force their home. Colonel EASON received the plane of his choice upon graduation: the F-4 Phantom. His flying squadrons included McDill AFB in Tampa, Fla.; Ubon, Thailand; Royal Air Force in Lakenheath, England; Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, N.V.; and his last squadron in the F-4 was at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina. He had several non-flying assignments including the Pentagon, Armed Forces Staff School and Air War College as a student and as a staff member for three years. He was squadron commander of the 50th Airmanship Training Squadron at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Col.  Colonel EASON'S last active duty assignment was as professor of aerospace science at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. from June 1992 to July 1995. There he prepared college students to enter the Air Force as 2nd Lieutenants. Upon his retiring from active duty in July 1995 he and his family moved back "home" to Eastern North Carolina and felt called to continue in the education field. He opened the first Air Force ROTC program at West Craven High School in Vanceboro, N.C. on Aug. 1, 1995. With approximately 150 students at the beginning of the program, Colonel EASON brought with him 25 years of experience in the Air Force in various flying and non-flying jobs. The purpose of the program was to make better citizens of the cadets. Travel and leadership training taught self-discipline and character training. His goal was to help as many young men and women who he could. Colonel EASON provided the cadets with opportunities to help their community through volunteer work: Salvation Army bell ringing, Adopt-a-Highway and Healthy Kids Fitness Day at the YMCA to name a few. On April 22, 2010, he was honored for his service and dedication to the Health and Fitness of Craven County students. He was also awarded the Inspirational Teacher Award from N.C. State University in 2008. He continued to work until his illness forced him to retire from his position in the fall of 2009. Colonel EASON was a person who loved life, people, his children and his grandchildren. His family was most important to him. He rarely missed any event in which his children and grandchildren participated, be it a school or church program, swim meets or a soccer game. His grandchildren played a primary role in his life over the last four years. They spent endless hours learning about and growing flowers in the garden, picking beautiful bouquets, feeding birds and raising butterflies. They enjoyed making ice cream sundaes and feeding them to each other. The more sprinkles the better. He took great pleasure in watching the Wolfpack play football and enjoyed going to several of their games this past year. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox since he was a young boy and he loved playing golf with his ROTC buddies, yearly beach trips with his family, gardening and discussions in his Sunday school class. Above all, he was a true gentleman of the finest order. His life was a perfect example of selflessness, kindness, humility, generosity, integrity, honor, love and respect toward all people. A celebration of life for Colonel EASON will be on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Garber United Methodist Church with Pastor John CHECK and Pastor Kent SMITH officiating. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern. He is survived by his wife of 39 1/2 years, JoNette; daughter, Jennifer SHELDON and her husband Rex; daughter Mary Catherine EASON MUIR and her husband Bill; son, Joshua EASON; grandchildren, Kali Lynn and Maverick Reef SHELDON; sister May MILLS and her husband Wade; nephew Wade MILLS Jr. and his wife Amy; and their son Eason. Raleigh, Jan. 7..... Mrs. Margaret Louise TYSON, 88, mother of Senator Lawrence D. TYSON, of Tennessee, died at her home here yesterday following an attack of bronchitis and complicated with heart trouble. Mrs. TYSON, born in Pitt county in 1840, came to Raleigh to make her home shortly after her marriage to the late Richard L. TYSON in 1861. Senator TYSON and her grandson, Lawrence LEE, of Knoxville, and Mrs. LEE were called to her bedside early last week when her condition became critical. When Mrs. TYSON rallied the latter part of the week, Senator TYSON returned to Washington and Mr. LEE to Knoxville. Funeral arrangements had not been made last night, pending the arrival of Senator TYSON and Mr. LEE.

WILMINGTON - Lucile WORTHINGTON HAHN, age 97, formerly of New Bern, NC died peacefully on January 25, 2011, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington. By her side were her daughter and granddaughters. She was born on June 1, 1913 in Winterville. She was the oldest girl of 9 children and is survived by her brother, Alva Wayne WORTHINGTON (Lois) of Winterville. Other survivors include her daughter, Celia HAHN ATKINSON (Billy); granddaughter, Cristi ATKINSON HERRING (Greg); CeCe ATKINSON SMITHWICK (Rudy); and four great-grandchildren, Brantley and Dillon HERRING and twins Haley and Cameron SMITHWICK. Lucile earned her RN at Saint Luke's Hospital in New Bern, and retired from the Craven County Health Department. She enjoyed sewing, conversation, reading and spending time with her grandchildren and later great grandchildren. She was an amazing woman who gave herself to the betterment of others. The family expresses a special thanks for the loving care provided by Hospice during the months of her convalescence. A graveside service will be held Friday, January 28, at 11:30 a.m., at New Bern Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Marquita HUTCHENS officiating. Born in Greenville, N.C., he was the son of the late Calvin Jesse HARRIS and Louanna BULLOCK HARRIS. CJ was a US Army WWII veteran, a Realtor, Broker and a teacher in Delaware. He was owner of Harris and Hanby Real Estate Company and associated with other real estate company's and other honors in Delaware. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and mentor to many. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara HARRIS WALTON & her husband, Rev. D. Richard WALTON, Sr. of Parsonsburg, Md.; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eugenia (Jean) BODLEY HARRIS, 12-18-10; a son, Calvin J. Jack Dennis KITE, 81, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010 in the University Health Systems Inpatient Hospice, Greenville. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Pinewood Memorial Park. Jack was born in Pitt County and was the son of the late William Lacy and Bessie KITE. He was a retired contractor. Jack enjoyed family, fishing and playing cards. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandson, Jake KING. NORFOLK - Georgette SAAD MILLAN, 90, went to be with her Lord and reunited with her beloved husband of 61 years Edward MILLAN Sr. Dec. 17, 2010. She was born in Greenville, N.C., Sept. 9, 1920 the daughter of the late Najib George SAAD and Manzer FARHAT SAAD. Georgette was a 1937 graduate of Greenville High School and attended East Carolina Teacher's College. She worked for the United States Treasury Department in Washington D.C., as an executive assistant. During World War II, she volunteered with the USO and the Red Cross. In 1947, Georgette married Edward and moved to Norfolk where she raised three children as well as working with her husband in his optometric practice. She was a member of the Tidewater Optometric Society Auxiliary and an active member of Sacred Heart Church. Left to cherish her loving memory are her children, Charlotte M. COHEA and husband Thomas of Norfolk, Marie M. EGERT of Chesapeake, Edward MILLAN Jr. of Norfolk and his fiancée Marcia ASHWORTH of Greenville, N.C.; grandchildren, Danielle J. COHEA of Cleveland and Alexandra M. EGERT of Chesapeake. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Josephine SAAD and her two brothers, Joseph SAAD and George SAAD and her sister-in-law Arriett BARNARD. Mrs. Emily Webb Dead

Mrs. Emily WEBB, who went to Baltimore Saturday to undergo an operation for facial neuralgia, from which she had long been a sufferer, was operated on Tuesday and death resulted at 2 o'clock Wednesday morning from the effects of the operation. Mrs. WEBB'S condition was known to be critical and the operation was undertaken as a last resort. Her son, Braxton B. WEBB, accompanied her to Baltimore and remained with her until the end came. The remains arrived here yesterday morning from Baltimore and were taken to Mr. C. B. WEBB'S residence on Kelly Street. Yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock the funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist church by Rev. C. G. WELLS, the pastor, assisted by Rev. H. K. BOYER, and the interment was at Oakwood. Mrs. WEBB was a native of Pitt county and was born a WALLACE. She would have been 60 years old in March. In 1859 she married John T. WEBB, a native of Edgecombe county, and in 1866 Mr. and Mrs. WEBB moved to Iredell, and the family has lived in and near Statesville ever since. Mr. WEBB died about eight years ago. Four children survive the mother. They are Messrs. C. B. and B. B. WEBB and Misses May and Lessie WEBB. One brother, Mr. John WALLACE, lives in Houston, Texas. For about 16 years, Mrs. WEBB had been a great sufferer from facial neuralgia and death came as a relief to her. Until rendered almost helpless by disease she was a very active and energetic woman and was a force in the circle in which she moved and in the congregation of the Baptist church, of which she was a faithful member.

Effie Moore Millard Dead

Effie MOORE MILLARD, 89, a resident of Millersville, died on March 14 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie. She was born on July 20, 1921 in Greenville, N.C., where she was raised, and previously lived in Washington, DC and the Bladensburg area. Mrs. MILLARD worked as a cashier for Grand Union Supermarket in Prince George's Plaza. She was a longtime member of the Central Baptist Church in Bladensburg, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 15 years at Pascal Center on Dorsey Road, and a volunteer for Crofton Convalescent Center. She enjoyed reading, sewing, shopping, and watching Bonanza on television. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard MILLARD III; and a daughter, Judith MILLARD STEWART. Survivors include two sons, Howard MILLARD, Jr. of Millersville and John Michael MILLARD of Columbia; one daughter, Nikki Therese CLEMENTSON of Edgewater; six grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and six great- great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 19 at1 p.m. at the little church located within Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, with burial to follow. Funeral services for Charles C. MAY of Grifton will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from the home by the Rev. John Clark NOBLE passed away peacefully at his home in Greenville on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010. John was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Ayden to the late Stephen Franklin NOBLE and Stella CLODFELTER NOBLE. John grew up in the Ayden community where he attended public schools. John played football at Ayden High School and later at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va., where he graduated in 1950. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He returned to Ayden and began a 33 year career with E.I. Dupont Company. John was active in the Ayden community, serving on the Town Council, Planning Board, and as the first President of the Ayden Jaycees. After retiring from DuPont and moving to Greenville, John enjoyed part-time work for Continental Tobacco Adjusters as well as substitute teaching with Pitt County Schools. Over the years of active membership in the Ayden United Methodist Church, John served on many committees, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. He was active in expanding a shut-in ministry to include recorded Sunday services. John was preceded in death by his son, John Clark NOBLE Jr.; and his parents. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan "Sue" Kinsey JACKSON; son, Richard Stephen NOBLE and wife, Jeannie, and their son, John, of Mount Airy; son, William Anderson NOBLE and wife, Christie, and their two sons, Waylon and Jasper, of Winston-Salem; brother, Stephen Franklin NOBLE; and two nieces, all of New Bern. Memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ayden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al HOCUTT officiating. Inurnment will follow at Ayden Cemetery. George was a Colonel US Air Force Retired after 26 years and former Deputy Director of the Melbourne International Airport. George was a US Air Force Vet of WW II and Korea. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Detroit, MI. He belonged to the AZAN Shrine Temple, Jester Court #188 and QB's. The Reverend Mr. John A. RICKS Jr. (December 23, 1906-August 13, 2010)  passed away early Friday morning, August 13, 2010, at Waddell Nursing Home in Galax, Virginia. Mr. Ricks, the son of John A. RICKS, Sr. and Ruth HARRISS RICKS, was born December 23, 1906, in Greenville, N.C. He was a proud and loyal alumnus of Davidson College, graduating from there in 1929, and from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. in 1932. His first pastorate was at historic Rocky River Presbyterian Church in Rocky River, N.C. In 1941, he moved to Webber City, N.C. with his wife, Mamye. He organized a Presbyterian congregation in the community, meeting in a vacant automotive garage for 11 years and eventually, laboring alongside church members as they cut trees, planed lumber, and constructed a building for Immanuel Presbyterian Church. After 15 years there, he and his family moved to Roanoke, Va. where he served as pastor at Belmont Presbyterian Church for 17 years. In 1973, he was called to Hillsville, Va. and served as Pastor at Dinwiddie and Fairview Presbyterian Churches until his retirement. He also served as interim pastor at Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Pulaski, Va. and supplied Westminster Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, also in Pulaski. In addition to his parents, Rev. RICKS was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mamye TURNER RICKS; his son, William Timothy RICKS; grandson, William Scott RICKS; sister, Julia HODGES; brother, George Harriss RICKS; and nephew, John Ricks HODGES. He is survived by his son, John A. RICKS III and wife, Elaine, of Cochran, Ga.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth WHARTENBY and husband, Tom, of Galax, Va.; grandchildren, Anne Ricks LAMPTON, J. Addison RICKS IV, Bryan GLOVER, David WHARTENBY and Kathryn WHARTENBY; great-grandchildren, Amy and Maggie LAMPTON; niece, Norwood STRASBERGER; and nephews, Harriss RICKS and Tom HODGES. His condition gradually grew worse until the end came Sunday night at ten o'clock. He leaves a wife and two sons. He was buried in the family burying ground near Conetoe yesterday afternoon.

RALEIGH — Edith JACKSON SZYPERSKI, 84, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh. Edith was born March 31, 1926 in Grimesland, NC to Virgil Alfred JACKSON and Mary NOONEY JACKSON. The last four years of her life were spent in Raleigh at the Springmoor Retirement Community where she made great friends. Previously, she lived in Kitty Hawk from 1999–2006. Prior to moving to Kitty Hawk, she lived in Greensboro from 1959-1999. Previously, she was a traditional Navy wife living in a variety of places. Edith was a loving wife and devoted mother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Patrick SZYPERSKI. Edith is survived by her five children, Ellen TEAGUE and her husband Bill of Fort Myers, FL; Jack SZYPERSKI and his wife Dawne of Wilmington; Edie SZYPERSKI of Raleigh; Jim SZYPERSKI and his wife Laura of Atlanta, GA; Jeff SZYPERSKI and his wife Wende of Weems, VA; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Springmoor Auditorium. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Mrs. Annie MCLAWHORN, 80, died yesterday afternoon at 4:50 o'clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank HARVELL of 227 Hall Avenue. She had been ill for six months and critically ill for two days. The widow of the late Walter Lee MCLAWHORN, Mrs. MCLAWHORN was a native of Pitt County, daughter of the late Cicero and Mrs. Penny REEVES SMITH. She was a member of Elm Grove Free Will Baptist Church near Ayden. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. HARVELL, included two other daughters, Mrs. L. W. MUMFORD, Sr. of Burlington and Mrs. Rufus CRAFT of Grifton, one son, R. M. MCLAWHORN of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Mrs. Ed SKINNER of Dover and Mrs. J. P. LONG of Bolton, one brother, Furney SMITH of Grainger, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Elm Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Rev. J. C. LYNN, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the cemetery in Grifton.

Burial will follow in the family cemetery near the home. Miss MOORE was born in Pitt county September 23, 1882, daughter of the late Guilford L. and Mary MOORE. She was a member of the Christian church at Stokes. Active pallbearers will be Hubert SIMMONS, Bruce MCLAWHORN, T. H. HODGES, Mahue POPE, Herbert RANDOLPH, and Arthur WOOLARD. W. H. WHICHARD, aged 71, highly respected farmer, passed away at his home near Staton's Mill Sunday morning. Luby Taylor Dead

Little Luby TAYLOR, of Hookerton, Greene county, was so badly burned by broom sedge on fire in his father's field that he died. During his painful delirium he told his mother he saw "little white birds" after him. Later, the little fellow exclaimed, "Here is one more," and was dead in a moment.

Edward Coward Dead

Died, in Greene County, N.C., on the 19th of July, 1863, in the 78th year of his age, Edward COWARD. The deceased lived to a ripe old age, and has been heard to remark upon several occasions, within the past two years, that he had lived too long, from the fact, that he had seen his country in its greatest prosperity, but regretted he had lived long enough to see it on the verge of ruin and destruction. He leaves two sons, one daughter and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.

M. T. Spier Dead

Following an illness extending over a period of time of more than a month, death came Friday afternoon to Mr. M. T. SPIER at his home in Winterville. The end came about three o'clock, after a long suspense of several days, during which time death was looked for almost instantly. Mr. SPIER had been ill for some time, but not until recently did his ailment take on a very serious turn. Mr. SPIER was one of the best known men in the county. For two terms he had served as County Commissioner of Pitt county, and was a member of the board at the time the long bridge was constructed across the Tar River at the foot of Pitt street. He was one of the members of the board who manifested a very great interest in the project, and gave much of his time and thought to the work. At the time of his death, Mr. SPIER was a resident of Winterville. Prior to that time he lived in Pactolus township, where for many years he was a justice of the peace, and where he enjoyed the friendship and respect of everyone who knew him. It was there that he was engaged in farming, and there that he was recognized as one of the best authorities on crops. A few years ago he sold his farm and moved to Winterville to engage in the mercantile business, and it was in this business that he labored at the time of his death. Mr. SPIER was forty years old and leaves a wife and six children, to whom the sympathy of their hundreds of friends will go out in this time of bereavement and trouble. The funeral services were held this afternoon at three o'clock at the family burying ground in Pactolus township.

Don Grady WHITE, 62, died at his home in Vanceboro at 6:20 p.m. Saturday after several years illness. Funeral services were conducted from the home this afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Sidney E. MATTHEWS of Washington, pastor of the Episcopal church of Vanceboro. Burial followed in the Vanceboro cemetery. Mr. WHITE was born and reared in Vanceboro, the son of the late E. F. WHITE and Henrietta CLEVE WHITE. In 1901 he married Miss Deborah HOELL. He owned a number of farms in Craven county and was one of its outstanding citizens. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Deborah WHITE, one son, Don Franklin WHITE, one sister, Mrs. Perry BLAND, two brothers, W. E. WHITE and J. A. WHITE, all of Vanceboro, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the church cemetery. BAZEMORE was well known thruout the city and had many friends among both the white and colored races. He operated a store here for many years, but retired several months ago when his health failed.

Benjamin Jesse SKINNER, 89, of West Point, Va., died on Sunday, March 8, 2009. He was born in Pitt County, N.C., to the late Benjamin and Leila SKINNER.  Ben was "a North Carolinian by birth and a Virginian by choice" who served in the Army Air Corps in both North Africa and Italy during World War II. During that time, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was decorated with the EAMET Campaign Medal with six Bronze Service Stars and a Bronze Star Medal. He was the manager at Roses Department Store for 22 years before coming to West Point in 1962 and opening Point Variety. Ben was a strong believer in giving back to his community, always striving to help others in need. For 20 years, Ben served in the local government, including being chairman of the King William Board of Supervisors, President of the Virginia Association of Counties, member and chairman of the West Point Industrial Development Authority, member of the West Point Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. Ben was active in numerous local organizations including the Kiwanis, where he served as a past president and received the Hixen award, the Pamunkey Regional Library Board, the VFW and the local Boy Scout Troop. He was a member of the West Point United Methodist Church where he served on several committees and was a Sunday school teacher. Ben was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Bet SKINNER. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Lee and David BRISTOW of Richmond; a son and his wife, David and Carmen SKINNER, of West Point; four grandsons, Matt and Justin BRISTOW, Evan and Neal SKINNER; a nephew and his wife, Henry and Carol SKINNER of Wilson, N.C. Hayes CLARK, Presbyterian minister of Greenville. Burial was in the Smith family cemetery. Mr. CANNON was a life-long resident of Pitt County and was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church near Winterville. Mr. CANNON was first married to Susan JONES of Beaufort County. Surviving this union are a son, Abram CANNON of Wilmington; and four daughters, Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth TRIPP of Farmville, Mrs. L. M. MARSLANDER of Galloway's Cross Roads, Mrs. E. D. MERRITT of Wilmington, Del., and Mrs. O. K. KITTRELL of Lumberton. His second marriage was to Sophia Louisa BUCK of Pitt County, who survives with three sons, James Willis CANNON, Jr., Thomas Jefferson CANNON, and Henry CANNON, all of the home; and four daughters, Mrs. A. VALE — Paul Wilkerson BROOKS of Vale, passed away at the Lutheran Home in Hickory on August 15, 2011. He was born on July 1, 1923 in Pitt County, the son of Francis Edwin BROOKS and Bessie Glenn WOOTEN BROOKS.  Paul grew up in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School in 1942. After graduation, Paul served in the Army Air Corps.  Paul received a BA from East Carolina Teacher’s College in 1948 and a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1951.  He served as Durham’s director of city planning from 1955 – 1970.  He served as state planner for the N.C. Dept. of Administration until he retired in 1978.  Paul was a lifelong learner who earned his private pilot’s license, was a member of the power squadron and became an expert brick layer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nannie LEATHERMAN BROOKS; brothers, Glenn, Francis and William BROOKS; and sister Blanche BROOKS.  He is survived by sister, Rachel HORD; daughters, Nancy USTACH (Beaufort), Lisa RHOADES (Durham);, and sons David BROOKS (Durham) and James BROOKS (Vale).  He has four grandchildren, Nicole VAN METER and Matthew BROOKS, Emily and Peter USTACH; and one great-granddaughter, Caroline VAN METER.  Visitation will be held at the home Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Lutheran Home of Hickory. TURNAGE, 86, who died at her home near Farmville early last night, were conducted at the home at 3:30 this afternoon followed by burial in Hollywood cemetery at Farmville. She was married on November 26, 1874, to A. P. TURNAGE, who died in October 1938, at the age of 89. Mrs. TURNAGE had lived 86 years in the home in which she died. Survivors are seven sons, J. R. TURNAGE of West Durham, M. L. and D. L. TURNAGE of Greenville, A. C. and L. E. TURNAGE of Farmville, C. A. TURNAGE of Washington, N.C., and J. M. AYDEN — Edna Earl STOCKS MCLAWHORN, 85, was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Mitchell MCLAWHORN; a son, James Mitchell MCLAWHORN; her parents, Walter L. and Gladys BULLOCK STOCKS; and brothers, Billy and D.W. STOCKS. Mrs. MCLAWHORN grew up and continued to reside on family farmland in the Ayden community; she graduated from Ayden High School and attended Croft Business College in Durham, N.C. Her late husband and she were involved with farming for a number of years. Together they owned and operated Mitchell MCLAWHORN Well Drilling in Ayden until his death in 1990. She worked and retired from Ayden Free Will Baptist Press in 1992. She was a member of the Ayden Free Will Baptist Church and the church's Ladies Auxiliary. For years she was an active member of the Ayden Chapter of the Fraternal Order of the Daughters of Pocahontas. She is survived by three daughters, Frances M. DAUGHERTY and husband Bud, of Ayden, Kathy M. WESTBROOK and husband Charlie, of Oriental, and Susan M. William Little SMITH, 85, died at his home near Chicod School Tuesday morning at 4:30 o'clock following a long illness. PROCTOR of near Greenville and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. SMITH, son of the late John A. and Lovie CLARK SMITH, spent his entire life in Pitt County. He was a farmer, merchant, operated a saw mill and manufactured farm implements. He was a member of Chapman's Chapel Methodist Church near Dudley's Cross Roads and was well known throughout the county.

Graveside services will be held a Cherry Hill Cemetery Saturday afternoon at three o'clock by the Rev. John W. DRAKE, Jr., rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mr. JOYNER, son of the late Olthos Leland and Anna FORBES JOYNER, was born in Greenville and attended Greenville High School and Bingham Military School in Asheville. He was employed by the British American Tobacco Company and was in China for four years. Then he was employed by P. Lorillard Company and lived in New York for several years. More recently he had lived in Southern Pines and in Florida. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a Mason. Surviving are a son, W. H. JOYNER of New York City; three sisters, Mrs. S. C.
