W.W. Crandall Dead

William Warren CRANDALL, 64 died at his home in the Oak Grove community near Robersonville at 4:10 Saturday morning after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Robersonville Primitive Baptist Church this afternoon at 3:30. Elder B.B. COWEN and Elder A. B. Ayers, Primitive Baptist   ministers of Bear Grass, officiated.  Burial was in the Robersonville cemetery. Mr. CRANDALL, son of the late Robert and Bettie WARREN CRANDALL, spent his entire life in Pitt County. He was a farmer. He married Ella ROSS of Pitt County in 1906. Surviving are his wife; three sons, J. S. CRANDALL and Thomas Russell CRANDALL of Robersonville and Willis Robert CRANDALL of the army, who had been overseas but retuned a few months ago; two daughters, Mrs. S. A. WALLACE and Mrs. Smallwood HARRIS of Robersonville; a brother, S.H. CRANDALL of Stocks; four sisters, Mrs. A. L. JAMES and Mrs. J. L. ROSS of Stokes, Mrs. Katie JAMES of Robersonville, and Mrs. J. W. Isaiah Johnson Dead

Died at his home in Woodington township, on Thursday, October 17th, Mr. Isaiah JOHNSON quietly departed this life. He was 67 years, 8 months and 27 days old. He leaves a wife, two children and a host of friends and relatives to mourn their loss.

Richard Skinner Dead

Mr. Richard SKINNER, brother of our townsman, Mr. Travis SKINNER, died Tuesday night at his home, near Quinerly, of an abscess, aged about 55 years. He leaves a wife and four children, two boys and two girls. He was buried Thursday evening at the Chesnutt grave yard.

Jesse W. Carson Dead

Jessie W. CARSON, 54 died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Minnie NELSON, at Leens, Wednesday night at 8:30 after being in ill health the past two years. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Bethel Friday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock. The Rev. W. M HOWARD, pastor, assisted by the Rev. L. D. HOLT, Baptist minister of Bethel, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bethel cemetery. The body will remain at the Wilkerson’s Funeral Home in Greenville until an hour before the funeral service, when it will be taken to the church. Mr. CARSON, a native at Pitt County, was reared near Bethel. He was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. He was a farmer until three years ago when he went to Newport News, Va., to work on a government project. Surviving are his wife , Mrs. Annie FORD CARSON; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Mae PADLEY of Ayden and Miss Annie Ford CARSON of Norfolk, Va, three brothers , T. Zeb CARSON of near Bethel, V. Clyde CARSON of Greenville, and Wadie T. CARSON of near Bethel; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie NELSON of Leens, Miss Lurleen CARSON of Bethel, and Mrs. Lillah CARSON of Bethel, and two grandchildren.   Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

David Ollen Deal Dead

Mr. David Ollen DEAL, 46, died at his home near Cobb’s Crossroads in Edgecombe County, Monday night at 8:15 o’clock.  He had been in ill health for several yeas and critically ill for only a few hours. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by the Rev. Frank DAVENPORT, Free Will Baptist minister of Tarboro. Mr. DEAL, son of the late John Ollen and Ida EDWARDS DEAL, was born and spent all his life in the Cobb’s Crossroads community and was a farmer.  He was a member of Juanita Tribe No. 78, Improved Order of Red Men of Macclesfield. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minnie BRILEY DEAL; two sons, Melvin R. DEAL  and J. Wayne DEAL of the home; two daughters, Marcelene and Patricia Ann DEAL of the home.; five brothers, Jonas DEAL of Falkland, J. Allen DEAL of Maacclesfield, Luther DEAL of Farmville, Sid Paul DEAL of Pinetops, and J Dudley DEAL of Goldsboro; and four sisters, Mrs. Clyde H HARRELL of Pinetops, Mrs. W. Primus Sheppard Dead

Snow Hill Items...Oct. 15; Old Uncle Primus SHEPPARD, colored, a camp follower and servant to the G. C. Rifles, died at his home last Saturday. The old man's face will be missed in the reunions of the Greene county boys who followed Lee and Jackson.

Jesse Letchworth Dead

Mr. Jesse LETCHWORTH, who lived in Kinston with his daughter, Mrs. W. F. MOORE, died Saturday evening about dark, of paralysis, aged 77 years. He was buried in the cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. A. LEE conducting the services.

Mr. Charles ROUNTREE died at Charlotte Thursday, aged 75 years. He moved from Pitt county to Charlotte about 9 years ago. He was buried Saturday in the old family burying ground, about two miles from Greenville.

Henry Speir Dead

Mr. Henry SPEIR, aged about 40 years, died at his home in Grifton yesterday morning about 11 o'clock. A wife and one child are left to mourn. The remains will be buried this evening in the family burying grounds near Grifton.

Cove Items...Aug. 13; Mrs. Vicie HEATH, widow of the late Jesse HEATH, died at the home of her son-in-law last Wednesday, aged 77 years. Mrs. HEATH was born and raised in Lenoir county, and was a sister of the late Arden WIGGINS and Mr. B. F. WIGGINS. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Bessie COX SHACKELFORD, 72, wife of Andrew SHACKELFORD of Blount’s Creek died in a Washington nursing home Sunday. She had made her home in Beaufort County for the past 25 years. A native of Pitt County, she was the daughter of Lewis and Litha MCLAWHORN COX. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband; three sons, A. C. SHACKELFORD, Jr., Greenville, Charlie SHACKELFORD of Aurora, and George SHACKELFORD of Norfolk, Va.; Three daughters Mrs. S. E. HAMRICK and Mrs. R. L. LAMM of Portsmouth and Mrs. Mrs. P. J. FITZPATRICK of San Francisco, California; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ethel COREY of Greenville; a brother Jesse COX of Ayden; three sisters, Mrs. Sallie BRAXTON of Ayden, Mrs. Mamie MCLAWHORN of Fort Barnwell and Mrs. Eva CANNON of Greenville. Funeral services will be held at Paul Funeral Home in Washington at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Greenville.

Albert M. Lum Dead

Albert M. LUM, 51, died at 9:40 Sunday morning while on the way to Sunday School. He had suffered heart disease since December 1952, but death was unexpected. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Immanuel Baptist Church by his pastor, the Rev. J.A. NEILSON and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with Masonic honors by the Greenville Lodge. His body will remain at the Wilkerson Funeral Home and will be carried to the church an hour prior to time of service. Mr. LUM was born and reared in Richmond, Virginia and was a son of the late John M. and Alice HOBBS LUM. He came to Greenville in 1936 as manager of the Firestone Store and had lived here since that time. For the past six years he was associated with Van Dyke Furniture Store as salesman and as bookkeeper. He was a member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 284 and also the White Shrine, Eastern Star, the Provost Guard and the Sudan Temple at New Bern. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby P. LUM; three daughters, Mrs. F. P. FAVARELLA of Washington, D. C., Mrs. William H. TRIPP of Greenville and Mrs. Rudy MORGAN of Richmond, Virginia; a stepdaughter Bernice W. PEACOCK and a step-son Andy PEACOCK of the home; and six granddaughters.

Mrs. Bettie Louvena Briley Dead

Mrs. Bettie Louvena BRILEY, 87, widow of Benjamin B. BRILEY, died at her home near Hickory Grove Church in the Bethel community at 6:30 o’clock Saturday night. She had been an invalid for five years and critically ill for the past week. Funeral services were conducted at the home at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist minister of Bethel, assisted by the Rev. L. B. MANNING, Free Will Baptist minister of Fountain. Burial was in the BRILEY family cemetery nearby. Mrs. BRILEY, daughter of the late John and Zelpha Carson WHITEHURST, spent all her life in Pitt County and was a member of Hickory Grove Free Will Baptist Church.  She was married to Mr. BRILEY in 1882 and he died in 1933.Surviving are three daughters, Misses MITTIES and Ackie BRILEY of the home and Mrs. Carrie B WHITEHURST of Greenville; a son, Johnnie B. BRILEY of the home, 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a brother Joe F WHITEHURST of Stokes.    Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

Mrs. Violet Moore Dead

Mrs. Violet Robbins MOORE, 43, Wife of Armistead T. MOORE, died at her home in Greenville at midnight Saturday after having been ill for only a few hours. Funeral services were conducted at Meadowbrook Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock this afternoon by Rev. L. W. TOPPING, Presbyterian minister of Greenville, and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. MOORE, daughter of the late J. D. and Mary PURSER, was born in Aurora and spent her early life there. In October of 1928, she was married to A. T. MOORE and they came to Greenville to live in August, 1929. She was a member of Meadowbrook Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband and two sisters, Mrs. Loan MAY and Mrs. Kathleen JONES, both of Greenville. Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

John H. Coward Dead

Departed this life at his residence in Lenoir County, March 22nd, 1878, John H. COWARD, in the fifty-first year of his age. The deceased died of diabetes, for several months previous to his death he was confined to the house and most of the time to his bed, bearing his sufferings patiently. It was devotedly hoped by the affectionate wife and children that he would soon be well again, but neither the skill of physicians nor the kind and unceasing attention of his family could arrest the fell destroyer. God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to take him home.  He passed away in peace, and his last remains were accompanied to the place of internment on Sunday evening last by a large number of sorrowing friends and sympathizing acquaintances.  Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

Mrs. Sallie Carter Dead

Jason Items...Aug. 5; Died on July 26th, Mrs. Sallie CARTER, of heart disease, in the 96th year of her age. She was the head of one of the most prolific families in this and adjoining counties, being the mother of 20 children and grandmother of 96.

Seth Phillips Dead

Castoria, Greene Co. Items...29; Mr. Seth PHILLIPS, aged 65 years, died last Thursday. Rapidly the old veterans are passing away. Mr. PHILLIPS was a good citizen and served his country faithfully in the late war, receiving two severe wounds during his service.

Mr. Norton MOORE, a very aged citizen of Ft. Barnwell, Craven county, died last Sunday. He was about 90 years old.

Arch Forbes Dead

Arch FORBES of Cleveland, Ohio, former Greenville man, died Thursday following an illness of only a few weeks. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at Wilmington at 3:30 o'clock. Burial was in the family cemetery plot. Mr. FORBES is the son of the late Arthur and Mary Virginia FORBES. Besides his widow, surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Orrell FORBES and two sisters, Mrs. Mary A. SMITH and Mrs. Leon F. EVANS, of Pitt county.

Mrs. Sophia L. Cannon Dead

Mrs. Sophia L. CANNON, 57, widow of James Willis CANNON, died suddenly at her home on the Washington highway near Greenville at about 6:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon following a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock by the Rev. R.D. CRAWFORD pastor of the Greenville Free Will Baptist. Burial will be in the Smith family cemetery near Chicod School. Mrs. CANNON spent most of her life in Pitt County in the Chicod community.  She had been living near Greenville for only a few months. Mr. CANNON died in 1946. Surviving are four sons, Johnnie CANNON, Buck CANNON, and Thomas J. CANNON of the home. James W. CANNON of Greenville and Henry CANNON of Willoughby, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Allen HILL of Kinston, Mrs. Cedric BURROUGHS of Greenville and Mrs.  Leon F. STRICKLAND of Willoughby, Ohio, eight grandchildren; a brother, Ben BUCK of Vanceboro; and three sisters, Miss Queenie BUCK of  Shelmerdine, Miss Phillie BUCK and Mrs. Mollie BUCK FORNES of Vanceboro.    Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

Mrs. Augusta HADDOCK EVANS, 84, widow of Marion J. EVANS died Thursday night at 7:35 at Pitt Memorial Hospital after four days of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the home near Robersonville, Saturday afternoon at three o’clock by The Rev. Cecil BROWN pastor of Robersonville Christian Church, assisted by the Rev. James HAGWOOD, Baptist Minister of Robersonville. Burial will be in the Robersonville Cemetery. Mrs. EVANS was born and reared in the Greenville community of Pitt County and had been a resident of the Robersonville community since 1920. Mr. EVANS died in 1962. She was a member of the Robersonville Christian Church. Surviving are a son, Milton EVANS of Winterville; five daughters; Mrs. Rosa WILLIAMS of the home, Mrs. Jack WARREN, Mrs. Elmer EVANS, Mrs. B. L. STEVENSON and Mrs. Elmo BULLOCK all of Robersonville; 23 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two brothers; Snodie HADDOCK of  Chicod and Fred HADDOCK of COX’s Mill; and four sisters: Mrs. Daily HARDEE of Winterville, Mrs. Lillie SUTTON of Stokes, Mrs. Tom ADAMS of Chicod and Mrs. Bessie HADDOCK of Cox’s  Mills.  Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

Rev. R. B. SPENCER Dead

Rev. R .P . SPENCER, 67, died at his home in Ayden Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Free Will Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. R. N. HINNANT  of Micro assisted by the Rev. Bruce BARROW of Snow Hill and the Rev. Charles CRADDOCK of Ayden. Burial was in the Ayden Cemetery. The deceased was a native of Pamlico County.  He was educated in Whitsett Institute and the University of North Carolina. He was married to Miss Cora SASSER in 1916 and taught for a number of years. In 1932 he was ordained to the Gospel Ministry.  He was elected to the position of Editor of the Free Will Baptist in 1936 which position he held until September 1953. He was a member of the Little Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving  are of son, Franklin SPENCER of Malverne, New York, a daughter, Miss Ruby Lee SPENCER of the home; a grandson; two brothers, Roger SPENCER of Hobucken and Tom SPENCER of Bayboro; two sisters, Mrs. Joe LUPTON of Hobucken and Mrs. Henry SAWYER of Detroit, Michigan.   Contributed by Annette Ginn Roebuck

Mrs. Caroline TUCKER, aged 72 years, died Saturday afternoon, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate MOYE. Her remains were interred Sunday afternoon at the family burying ground on the old Tucker place about seven miles from Kinston, in Vance township. The funeral services were conducted by Mr. A. J. LOFTIN.

Mr. Joe V. SUMERELL, 87, died at his home near Grifton at 7:15 o’clock Wednesday morning following a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 o’clock by the pastor, the Rev. Horace QUIGLEY, Christian minister of Grifton. Burial will be in the Grifton Cemetery. Members of the Grifton Masonic Lodge will have charge of the services at the grave. Mr. SUMERELL son of the late John and Penny ELLIS SUMERELL spent all his life in the Grifton community and had operated a shoe repair shop there for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Grifton Christian Church and the Grifton Masonic Lodge No. 243 A.F. & A.M. Surviving are his wife, the former Lottie SKINNER to whom he was married in 1916; a son, Jack of the home; a daughter Mrs. Paul PHILLIPS of Kinston; a grandchild; three brothers, W. A. Colored News---Funeral services for Mrs. Louise DIXON who died at her home in Greenville, Saturday after a brief illness, will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 pm at the Holiness Church on Clark Street. Surviving are her husband, Joe DIXON of the home; three stepsons, Herbert, Edward, and Joseph of Pitt County; one stepdaughter, Miss Annie Mae DIXON of Camden, New Jersey; five sisters, Misses Mary and Sophia Ward of Greenville; Miss Caldonia Ward and Mrs. Alice Riddick of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. Ethel Lee DIXON of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, Lee and John Henry WARD of Winterville. The body will remain at Phillips Brothers Funeral Home in Greenville until late Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Troy Lee BEAVERS, 51, died in a hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee, Friday night at ten o’clock following two weeks of critical illness.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but the body will be brought to Greenville for burial. Mr. BEAVERS was born in Greene County, son of Mrs. Florence B. WILSON and the late Roscoe B. BEAVERS. He has lived in the Vanceboro community until he went to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to live about a year ago.  He was a member of Palmetto Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jeanette WILLIAMS BEAVERS a son, Roland BEAVERS and two daughters, Jeannie and Jesse Lee BEAVERS all of the home; his mother; three brothers; Roscoe BEAVERS, Jr. of Norfolk, Robert M. BEAVERS of Hot Springs, Ark. and Jesse BEAVERS of Fort Stockton, Texas and four sisters; Mrs. Clifton Barr of Chocowinity, Mrs. J.A. CREED of Suffolk, and Mrs. K C. Mrs. Margaret RASBERRY, age 74 years, died at 4:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. R. L. SMITH in South Greenville. The burial took place this afternoon near her old home in Greene County.  She had been an invalid for several years and her death was not unexpected. Mr. B. J. Wilson Dead

Thursday afternoon about half past two o’clock Mr. B. J. WILSON died at his home about one mile north of Greenville. He was about 62 years old. Mr. WILSON had been in poor health for some time, but seemed to be no worse than usual until a night or two before his death. He never married. He was an active member of Greenville Lodge of Masons, and was buried this afternoon with Masonic honors.. Mrs. Nancy BAKER, 62, wife of Jesse F. BAKER, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning at 11:10. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Thursday afternoon at two o’clock by her pastor, the Rev. W. D. MORTON, Jr. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mrs. BAKER was born and reared in Greene County and moved to her present home near Greenville near Manning’s store on the Falkland Highway about 12 years ago. Prior to that time she had lived near Oak City and Cox’s Mill.  She was a member of the Boyd Memorial Presbyterian Church.  Surviving are her husband, Jessie F. BAKER; three sons, Jessie BAKER, Jr. and   J. F. BAKER of Newport News, Va. and James A BAKER of the home. Mr. Mark Hermon SMITH, 69, a prominent farmer died at his home in the Bell Arthur community , Wednesday morning at 6:15 after three days of critical illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Bell Arthur Christian Church Thursday afternoon at three o’clock and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Howard JAMES, pastor of the Red Oak Christian Church assisted  by the Rev. Wilbur A. BALLINGER, pastor of the Bell Arthur Christian Church  will conduct the service. The body will remain at the Wilkerson Funeral Home and will be taken to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mr. SMITH, son of the late Ivy and Nancy FLANAGAN SMITH, spent all his life in the Pitt County in the Bell Arthur community. He attended the Bell Arthur School, Mars Hill College and N. C. State College. He was a member of the Bell Arthur Christian Church and was an Elder in the church. He was married to the Miss Lucy MOORE of Falkland in 1927 and she died in 1950. He was later married to Mrs. Lettie MEEKS BARBER of Greenville, who survives.  Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. David B. HARRIS of the home, a son, Mark Hassell SMITH of the Bell Arthur community; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. C. S. Horton DICKERSON, 60, died suddenly at his home near Grimesland Sunday night at 10:30 o’clock after three years of declining health. JOHNSON, Pentecostal Holiness minister of Greenville and burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.  Mr. DICKERSON, son of the late Isham and Lucy KNUCKLES DICKERSON, was born in Warren County, coming to Pitt County at an early age. He was a member of the Red Oak Christian Church near Greenville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucy MOORE DICKERSON, a son Louis Horton DICKERSON of Newport News, Va.; Mrs. W E. Mr. George C. JAMES, 83, died in Robersonville Township Hospital Thursday morning following an illness of nine days. Funeral services will be conducted at the Parmele Methodist Church Saturday morning at 11:00 by the pastor, the Rev L.A. WATTS assisted by the Rev. Arnold POPE. Burial will be in the Martin Memorial Gardens. The body will be taken from the home in Parmele to the Church one hour prior to the time of services. Mr. JAMES was a lifelong resident of the Parmele Community and was a member of the Parmele Methodist Church, where he had been Sunday School superintendent and teacher for more than fifty years. He was a retired rural mail carrier and had also been active in the sale of fertilizer and insurance. He was the tax lister and tax collector for Parmele.  His wife, Sallie Ward JAMES, died May 25, 1964. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Beatrice JAMES EDMONDSON OF Bethel, Mrs. Ruby T. FINCH of Greenville, Mrs. Jarvis J. EDGERTON of Kenly, Mrs. R. Earl FLEMING of Bethel and Mrs. H. Abram GRAY, Jr. of the home; four sons, W, C.  S. Sgt T. C. JAMES was born August 9, 1922 near Stokes in Pitt County. He had lived most of his life in the Stokes community and attended school there. He enlisted in the Army March 18, 1940 and trained at Fort Moultrie, S. C., before going overseas in June, 1940. He was stationed at He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, when the Japanese attacked Dec. 7, 1941. He was engaged in active combat duty and was killed in action Feb. 2, 1945 on Luson.  Pfc. Styron P. JAMES was born August 10, 1924, near Stokes. He had spent most of his life there and attended  the Stokes school. He entered the U. S. Army August 18, 1944, trained at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and went overseas in January, 1945. He was killed in action in France March 10, 1945 while participation in the effort to cross the  Rhine River. He was a member of Sweet Gum Grove Free Will Baptist near Stokes.  Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. JAMES of 402 Jarvis Street, Greenville; a brother Ennis JAMES of the Navy; seven sisters, Mrs. Leon GARRIS, Barbara and Carolyn JAMES of the home, Mrs. Roy SPEIGHT, Mrs. E.M. CARTER and Mrs. O.B. LEMONS all of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Claude MANNING of Greenville; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Addie MEEKS of near Stokes.

Pvt. William K. Andrews Dead

Funeral services for Pvt. William Kelly ANDREWS will be conducted at Greenwood Cemetery at 3 p.m. Sunday. Full military honors will be accorded by Charles Gray Morgan Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pvt. ANDREWS was born February 15, 1922 in Pitt County. He was reared in the Belvoir community and attended schools there. He was inducted in the U. S. Army November 19, 1942, trained at Camp Clairborne, La., and Fort Houston, Texas before going overseas November 23, 1943. He landed in Casablanca, North Africa, December 10, 1943. He left North Africa and arrived in Naples, Italy, February 6, 1944. He engaged in active combat duty and was in the 88th Infantry Division, which liberated Rome June 6, 1944. He was killed July 17, 1944 in the Battle of Leghorn, Italy. Surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. H. ANDREWS of Greenville, in the Meadowbrook community; three brothers, J. D. and Henry ANDREWS of Greenville, James ANDREWS of the U. S. Army, now in Japan; five sisters, Mrs. L. A. MOORE of Grimesland, Mrs. Jake ELKS, Jr., and Mrs. R. E. Funeral Services for Pfc. Claude C. GARRIS was born in Ayden and reared there and in Farmville. The son of Mrs. Julia LLOYD of Marlboro and the late Skilton GARRIS, he attended schools in Ayden and Farmville and was a member of Farmville Christian Church.  He was inducted in the U.S Army in 1942 and trained at Fort Bragg, Camp House, Texas and Fort Houston, Texas, before going overseas to Italy. He was killed May 12, 1944 in Italy. A little past 6 o’clock Monday evening at the home of her son, Mr. E. H. FOLEY, in West Greenville, Mrs. Mary FOLEY passed away after an illness of several weeks.  She was 65 years of age and had long been a resident of Greenville, among whose people she had a host of friends holding her in high esteem. Mrs. FOLEY is survived by three children, Mr. E. H. FOLEY and Mrs. E. E. GRIFFIN of Greenville; and Mrs. M. CHERRY of Washington. The funeral took place at 3:30 o’clock this afternoon, services being conducted in the Catholic Church by Father GALLAGHER, of New Bern, the interment following in Cherry Hill cemetery. John T. TRIPP Dead

John T. TRIPP, 82, died at his home in Winterville at 3:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon after being ill for several months. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel Thursday afternoon at two o’clock by the Rev. N. D. BEAMON Free Will Baptist minister of Snow Hill assisted by the Rev. E. G. COLE and The Rev. M. A. WOOLARD Baptist ministers of Winterville. Burial will be in the Winterville Cemetery. Mr. TRIPP spent all his life in the Winterville community and was a son of the late Redden and Alvania STOCKS TRIPP. He was a farmer and a member and deacon of the Winterville Free Will Baptist Church. He was married to Annie WILLIAMSON in 1896 and she died in 1915. In 1916 he married to Abbie CARROLL and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Leo TRIPP of the home and F. McCoy TRIPP of Winterville; a daughter, Mrs. F. J. Death of Mrs. Margaret Coward

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth COWARD, aged 59, widow of the late W. C. COWARD, died at her residence, Harvey Street, Thursday night at 10:45 o'clock.  She had been seriously ill from erisipelas for several days and her death was not unexpected.  All of her children and several of her sisters and brothers were here at the time of her death. Mrs. COWARD was a Miss PHILLIPS before her marriage to Mr. COWARD, who preceded her to the grave two years ago.  She was a woman of most estimable character and liked by many.  She was an esteemed member of Gordon Street Christian Church.  The funeral service was held at the residence at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon.  Messrs. B. P. SMITH and C. W. HOWARD officiating.  Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery. Surviving Mrs. COWARD are the following children: Edward S. COWARD, Savannah, Ga.; Capt. Allen H. COWARD, Goldsboro; Miss Jennie COWARD, New Bern; Jesse COWARD, Ayden; Mrs. A. L. EDWARDS and Hubert COWARD, Kinston.  She also left four sisters and four brothers: Ben PHILLIPS, David PHILLIPS, Mrs. W. G. GARRIS and Mrs. Allen ADAMS, all of Grifton; J. T. The funeral of Mrs. Henry ORMOND, member of a prominent family, was held at Grifton Wednesday afternoon.  Mrs. ORMOND was of an advanced age.  She died at her home in Pitt County town Tuesday night.  She was extensively related in several counties.  She was the aunt of W. F. HARPER, of Kinston.  The funeral and burial services, the latter in a Grifton burial ground, were largely attended.   Contributed by Bill Bland

Death of James H. Ormond

James Henry ORMOND, nearly 80 years of age, died Sunday at 1 p. m. at the residence of a daughter, Mrs. Joe BALL BLAND, near Grifton.  Mr. ORMOND was a member of one of the best known families in this section.  The ORMOND'S have been prominent here since colonial days.  The funeral was held at 3 p. m. today.  Burial was at Grifton.  The Rev. Mr. STRICKLIN, a Methodist minister residing at that town, officiating, and Rountree Lodge 243 of the Masons, of which Mr. ORMOND was a member, had part in the service.  Mr. ORMOND'S wife died 1921. He is survived by five children, Mrs. Zebulon TRIPP and L. T. ORMOND, residing near Vanceboro; S. B. ORMOND, Lenoir County, and Mrs. Joel BROOKS and Mrs. J. B. BLAND, residing near Grifton.  He was the uncle of the following, well known in this part of the State; W. W. and Julius HARPER, Dover; W. F. HARPER, Kinston, and Mrs. M. E. Funeral of John J. Bizzell

The funeral of John J. BIZZELL, prominent retired citizen, who died at his home on North Independence Street at 9 o'clock Thursday night, will be held from the residence this afternoon at 5 o'clock with Rev. Robert E. BROWN, pastor of Queen Street Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery following the service at home.
Mr. BIZZELL was a native of Duplin County but had resided most of his life in Kinston.  His active business career was in the banking business, having been connected with the old First National Bank from young manhood to the time of his retirement a year or two before that institution failed.  Had Mr. BIZZELL lived he would have been 72 years old on September 7th next.  He was a prominent churchman and had been an active steward of the Queen Street Methodist Church for more than thirty years.  He had been in declining health for several years and in particularly frail condition for the past year.  He had only been confined, however, to his home for the past two weeks. He is survived by his widow and five children as follows:  Mrs. G. C. SANDERS, of Portsmouth, Va.; H. L. BIZZELL, of Charlotte, and Mrs. G. W. MALLARD, Mrs. Marvin BAKER, and Norwood BIZZELL, of Kinston,  Another son, Fletcher BIZZELL, died several years ago.  There are also eight grandchildren surviving.  Stewards of the Methodist Church will be honorary pallbearers.  The active pallbearers are G. C. SANDERS Sr. and G. C. SANDERS Jr. of Portsmouth, Marvin BAKER, Gordon MALLARD, Talbot MIDYETTE, Quincey HART and R. J. JENKINS, of Kinston.  Mr. BIZZELL was a man of quite manner and pleasing personality.  He was a devout Christian.  Contributed by Bill Bland

Samuel Phillips Dead

The funeral of Samuel PHILLIPS, 72, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Bruce PITTMAN, near Ayden, about 6 a. m. Friday, will be held from the Pittman residence at 3 p. m. Saturday.  Rev. Clifton RICE, Free Will Baptist officiating.  Burial will be in Grifton Cemetery.  Mr. PHILLIPS had been in ill health several years and had been bed-ridden about 18 months.  He was a prominent retired farmer, known to many over the section.  He was a member of Little Creek Free Will Baptist Church near Ayden.  His wife died several years ago. Surviving are these children; Johnny Guy PHILLIPS and Lacy PHILLIPS, all of Grifton; Albert PHILLIPS, Kinston; Mrs. PITTMAN and Mrs. Ray HARDISON, Stokes.  Three brothers, Jesse PHILLIPS and William PHILLIPS of Ayden, and Joe PHILLIPS, Monroe, also survives.    Contributed by Bill Bland

The funeral of Mrs. Edgar M. DELAMAR, Sr. about 50, who died in a Durham hospital Friday, will be held from the funeral home at Rocky Mount at 3:30 p. m. Saturday. Surviving with her husband are a son, Edgar M. DELAMAR, Jr., of Kinston, and a grandson, Edgar M. The funeral of Mrs. Ida BAYNE, 67, of Mebane, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Harry BLAND, here Saturday, was held from the Bland home at 10 a. m. Monday.  Rev. A. S. PARKER, Pastor of Queen Street Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial was in a cemetery near Mebane. Surviving with the daughter are two sons, R. E. BAYNE, of Burlington, and R. G. BAYNE, Thomasville, and eight grandchildren.  Mrs. BAYNE had been in failing health some time.  Contributed by Bill Bland

Mrs. W. Charles Dudley Dead

Mrs. W. Charles DUDLEY, 48, died at her home in Washington, N. C. Sunday.  She was related by marriage to persons here, and was an occasional visitor to Kinston.  Her husband is a businessman in the tidewater town.  Mrs. DUDLEY was the mother-in-law of Fred POTTS, a traveling salesman who is a weekly visitor to this city.  POTTS played baseball in Kinston for a short time some years ago.  There are numerous survivors.   Contributed by Bill Bland

Mrs. Eliza P. WILLIAMS, 80, widow of James WILLIAMS, died at her home on the Richlands road about 5 p. m. Wednesday after a short illness.  The funeral will be held at 4 p. m. Friday from the late residence with burial in Williams Cemetery near the home.  Rev. C. H. COATES, Free Will Baptist of Four Oaks, will officiate. Surviving are two sons, David R. WILLIAMS and Edwin G. WILLIAMS, of Lenoir County, 11 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. R. L. HILL of Lenoir County.  Mrs. WILLIAMS was a member of the Woodington Free Will Baptist Church for a number of years.  Her husband was a prominent farmer.  He died about 28 years ago.  Grandchildren will act as pallbearers. VANCEBORO, April 22 - Funeral services were held at the home near here this afternoon for W. K. PATE, 58, who died at the home Friday morning after a long illness.  Rev. W. H. BRADY, pastor of the Vanceboro Methodist church, conducted the services and interment in Epworth Methodist Cemetery followed.  Mr. PATE was a member of the Epworth church and had spent his entire life in this community. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Nannie KIRKMAN to who he was married in 1910; two sons, Laurie PATE of near Vanceboro and Pvt. Earl Edward PATE who is overseas in the United States Army; a daughter, Blanche Marie PATE of the home, and a brother, Salem PATE of Newport. Contributed by Bill Bland

Mrs. Nina DIXON BRAXTON, 59, wife of J. F. BRAXTON of Fort Barnwell, who has been in declining health for the past year, died in Memorial General Hospital here at 8:40 p. m. Monday. The body will lie in state at Edwards Funeral Home here from 1 to 3 p. m. Wednesday and the last rites will be conducted from the funeral home at 3 o'clock by Rev. Ralph LEWIS, pastor of Lane's Chapel Methodist Church.  Assisting with the rites will be Dr. H. I. GLASS, local Methodist pastor.  Interment will be in Westview Cemetery on the Goldsboro highway.  Mrs. BRAXTON was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Mc. DIXON of Ayden.  She was well known throughout this section. Surviving are a son D. F. BRAXTON of Fort Barnwell; a daughter, Mrs. James A. MERRITT of Kinston; four sisters, Miss Helen DIXON and Mrs. Bill MOORE of Ayden, Mrs. P. C. CHAPMAN of Fort Barnwell, and Mrs. Daniel LANE of Roxboro; two brothers, Dr. G. G. DIXON and M. E. Death claimed Edward Benjamin THOMAS, 69 year old retired lumberman, at 3:25 p. m. Saturday at the home here of his daughter, Mrs. Murray S. KOONCE, at 106 West Daniel Street. He had been in declining health for a number of years.  He was the son of the late Jesse and Symantha BRYANT THOMAS of Bethel and lived in Kinston for many years, leaving once for a five year period but returning in 1945.  The funeral will be conducted at 4:30 p. m. Monday from the home of Mrs. KOONCE with burial in Westview Cemetery.  Rev. Howard DAWKINS, Baptist, and Dr. Thomas H. HAMILTON, Presbyterian, will officiate. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice BRILEY THOMAS; three sons, Magistrate W. J. THOMAS of Kinston, James B. THOMAS of Plymouth and Edward Alton THOMAS of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Mrs. KOONCE, Mrs. T. Leslie LEE and Mrs. J. Roland BLOW, all of Kinston and several grandchildren.  Acting as pallbearers will be J. R. FORDHAM, Marshall WHITEHURST, Floyd THOMAS, Fletcher THOMAS, J. B. BLIZZARD and E. G. BARRETT. Cicero BRINKLEY, 59, died at his home on Grifton Route 2 (near Hugo) on Wednesday night after a lengthy illness.  He was a farmer and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Kinston.  Mr. BRINKLEY was a son of the late Ellis and Ann WIGGINS BRINKLEY of Craven County.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Friday fro Garner's Funeral Chapel with his pastor, Rev. Dick WHITLEY, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery near Grifton. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Clemie HARRIS BRINKLEY of the home; eight sons, Clarence Earl and Durwood E. BRINKLEY, both of Belgrade, Harry BRINKLEY of Snow Hill, Ronald, Bobby, Cicero P., William I., and Elwood BRINKLEY, all of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Tommy R. LaGrange, Dec 20 – Funeral services for Mrs. Mary GRANT MOYE, 80, who died in Wayne Memorial Hospital at Goldsboro on Thursday afternoon were to be conducted from the St. John's Free Will Baptist Church, Goldsboro, Route 3, Thursday afternoon.  Burial was to follow in Fairview Cemetery here.  Mrs. MOYE was the widow of James D. MOYE and the daughter of the late Ichabod and Mary DALY GRANT of Wayne County. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. R. B. BENTON of Nashville, Mrs. Lee HOLMES of the home (near Goldsboro), Mrs. L. R. TAYLOR of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. J. M. ANDERSON of LaGrange and Mrs. T. N. BUCKNER of Fayetteville; three sons, George E. MOYE, N. D. MOYE and W. S. MOYE, all of Goldsboro; one sister, Mrs. E. J. Mrs. Letha Belle TYNDALL FULCHER, 45, wife of Owen FULCHER, died at her home on route one, New Bern, Tuesday morning at 12:35 o'clock after an extended illness.  Mrs. FULCHER was the daughter of the late John and Jessie MUSE TYNDALL.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Antioch church with Rev. J. C. GRIFFIN and Rev. Clinton LUPTON officiating.  Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery. Mrs. FULCHER is survived by her husband; two sons, Jimmy FULCHER of the U. S. Mrs. Judah Alice BRILEY THOMAS, 74, wife of the late Edward Benjamin THOMAS, died at 11:15 p. m. Saturday in a Kinston hospital after a lengthy illness.  She had made her home for the past several years with her son, W. J. THOMAS, at 2213 Stallings Drive, where the family will be.  She was a native of Pitt County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William J. BRILEY.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Monday from the First Baptist Church.  Rev. E. Gordon CONKLIN, her pastor, and Dr. Thomas HAMILTON, Presbyterian, will officiate.  Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Surviving are three sons, Edward Alton THOMAS, of Hillcrest Heights, Md., James B. THOMAS, of Plymouth and William J. THOMAS, of Kinston; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Leslie LEE and Mrs. Murray S. MIXON and Mrs. Roy NORRIS, all of Kinston; two sisters, Mrs. Annie BALLARD and Mrs. Joe BALLARD, both of Kinston; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday.  Burial followed in Daly's Chapel Church Cemetery. Survivors include one son, W. H. THIGPEN of LaGrange; two daughters, Mrs. R. E. Willie E. Padgett Dead

Grifton - Aug. 16 - Willie E. PADGETT, 44, of Grifton, died in Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, Monday.  Funeral will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Wednesday at 11 am by Rev. Edward B. JORDAN and Rev. William M. EDGE.  Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Washington with Masonic Rites. He was a native of Rocky Mount.  He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2.  He operated Padgett Construction Company, Inc and was president of the firm.  He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Grifton.  The Grifton Masonic Lodge, New Bern Consistory No. 3 Sudan Temple, Grifton Chapter No. 134, Order of the Eastern Star and the Grifton post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gilda HUFF PADGETT; one son, James Glen PADGETT of the home; one daughter, Mary Catherine PADGETT of the home; his mother, Mrs. Louis A. PADGETT of Columbia, SC; and four sisters, Mrs. A. M. HEDGEPATH, Mrs. Marvin POOLE, and Mrs. R. L. BRADLEY, all of Portsmouth, Va., and Mrs. Clara MARKHAM of Ft. Eugene SUMMER of the Little Creek Free Will Baptist Church will officiate.  He was a member of the Little Creek Church and a farmer. Wayne WEGWART.  Burial followed in the Rainbow Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Garner's Funeral Home for Mrs. Virginia GRAY GARNER, widow of N. Keith GARNER, who had made her home here at Columbia, S.C., for a number of years.  She died at 9:20 p. m. Sunday of injuries received in an automobile wreck sometime Saturday. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dwight BLUE of Kinston, Mrs. Charlie NEWMAN and Miss Teresa Diane GARNER, both of Columbia, S.C.' one son Norvelle K. Mrs. Mary CRAFT JARMAN, 79, of Trenton Route 2 died in a local hospital about 8 a. m. Saturday.  Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday from the chapel at Garner's Funeral Home with Rev. Vernon BRASWELL, Baptist of Trenton, officiating, assisted by Rev. Lavelle WATERS, Baptist of Kinston.  Interment followed in the Rile Oak Cemetery in Jones County. Survivors include three sons, Van L. JARMAN and Jim JARMAN, both of Trenton, William H. Mrs. Lillian Mae HEATH, 60, of Grifton Route 2, wife of Kirby HEATH, died in a local hospital about 6 p. m. Saturday after a brief illness.  She was the daughter of the late Donald and Mary ANDREWS BANKS of Jones County.  Funeral services were held from Jarman Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Monday with Rev. Charles HODGES of New Hope Baptist Church officiating.  Burial followed in Langston Cemetery near Albertson in Duplin County. Survivors in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Mrs. John R. JONES of Grifton Route 2; two sisters, Mrs. Eula EDWARDS and Mrs. Claude AVERY of Dover; a brother, Le Roy BANKS of New Bern; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.  Contributed by Bill Bland

Hubert H. RICHARDSON, 75, retired farmer of Dover Rt. 1 died Sunday in Lenoir Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday from Garner's Funeral Home chapel.  Interment will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park. Surviving are a son, Warren RICHARDSON, of Dover Rt. 1; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy GRADY of Panama Canal Zone; five sisters, Mrs. Ann KELLUM, Mrs. Floyd SMITH and Mrs. Lebern ROUSE, all of Kinston, Mrs. Willis WHITE of Dover and Mrs. William STALLINGS Jr. of Tarboro; three grandchildren.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p. m. Survivors include three brothers, Randolph CREECH of Snow Hill, James CREECH of Kinston and Jimmy Ray CREECH of Hookerton; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys CREECH HARDY and Mrs. Josephine C. JONES both of Kinston; and a step-daughter, Janice LOFTIS.  The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home from 7-8 p. m. Susan BLAND LEWIS, 91, of Box 299, Kinston Rt. 6 died Sunday.  Lewis was a housewife and member of British Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday from Howard-Carter-Stroud Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Robert M. FADER officiating.  Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery in Kinston. Survivors include seven daughters, Marie HARDMAN, Marilyn MINTON, Hilda ALDRIDGE and Carolyn BUTLER, all of Kinston, Beatrice BLAND and Georgia ORMOND, both of Dover and Marjorie BRIGHT of Snow Hill; two sons, Harold LEWIS of Saratoga, Calif., and Wallace LEWIS Jr. of Kinston; one sister, Laura BLAND of Kinston; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. today at the funeral chapel and other times at the home of her daughter, Carolyn BUTLER, Kinston.  Memorials may be made to British Church Building Fund, c/o Barbara DAUGHETY, Rt. 6, Box 310, Kinston, NC 28501.   Contributed by Bill Bland

Kinston - Mr. Leo "Sonny" ALBRITTON, 79, of 1008 N. Rhem Street, died Saturday, November 9, 1996, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Kinston.  He was a retired G. E. District Sales Rep. for Eastern NC for 35 years.  He was a veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient.  He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a past member of the Diaconate, and was past chairman of the Diaconate and was made a life Deacon.  He was an active member of Spilman Sunday School Class, a past president of Kinston County Club and Northwest PTA.  He was a member of the American Legion, TPA and AARP and was an avid sportsman.  He was preceded in death by his son Leo "Sonny" ALBRITTON, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Caroline HILL ALBRITTON, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law Cooper and Keith MOORE of Chesapeake, VA., and two grandchildren, Holly and Greyson MOORE of Chesapeake, VA.; two sister-in-law, Helen HARGETT of Kinston, and Sara LOFTIN of Mount Holly, NC, four nieces, five nephews and six great nephews.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m., Monday from the First Baptist Church with Dr. Aubrey JONES officiating.  Interment will be held earlier at Maplewood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the home, 1008 N. Kinston - Mrs. Mildred BRAXTON MERRITT, age 88, of 1103 Margaret Lane, died at her home on Nov. 13, 2000 after a lengthy illness.  She was preceded in death by her parents Jesse Fountain BRAXTON and Nina DIXON BRAXTON of Ft. Barnwell, her brother Dixie Fountain BRAXTON and her husband James A. MERRITT, a former Highway Patrol Sergeant and DMV employee.  Mrs. MERRITT was a retired Employee with the Lenoir County Department of Social Services and a member of Queen St. United Methodist Church.  She was well known in the community and leaves many friends here and in the Swansboro community, where she had a summer home. Other survivors include her nephew, Jesse Fountain BRAXTON and wife, Connie, of Ft. Barnwell; a cousin Mrs. Tripp WILLIS and husband, Weston WILLIS, of Morehead City; great nieces include, Susie BRAXTON THORTON and Jesse Lynn BRAXTON; and great-great nephews, Michael John THORTON and Lucas Tyler THORTON.  Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 from Westview Cemetery with the Rev. Francis DANIEL officiating.  Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p. m. Wednesday from Edwards Funeral Home.  Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Queen St. United Methodist Church, P.O. JONES, 63, of 2924 Fox Hunters Road, Kinston went to be with his Eternal Heavenly Father on Nov. 13, 2000 after an extended illness.  He was a retired truck driver with M & C Septic Tank Company.  He served in the U.S. Army, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, member of the Southwood Ruritan Club and a retired volunteer with Southwood VFD. Survivors include his two daughters, Peggy JONES of Princeton, Teresa DAVIS and husband, Tim, of the home; a brother, William Lewis JARMAN and wife, Ethel, of Kinston; two sisters, Elsie DAVIS of Kinston, and Patricia FOX and husband, Paul, of Wilmington; two grand children, Freddie SMALL of Deep Run, and Carolyn SMALL of Snead's Ferry, and a special pet “Pookie.”  Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 from the chapel of Garner Funeral Home with Rev. Steven DIXON officiating.  Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Burial will follow at Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Linda G. JACKSON of Vanceboro and Ruth G. Mrs. M. A. HOLTON, near Grifton, died Saturday night at 11 o'clock, aged about 50 years, and was buried in the family burying ground Sunday afternoon. She left three children to mourn their great loss. She was sister of our townsman, Mr. J. A. PRIDGEN.

Mrs. E. J. SIMPKINS, wife of Mr. John SIMPKINS, of Kinston, died Monday morning at 4 o'clock, of congestion of the brain, aged 70 years. She was a native of Greene county. Her remains were interred yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. C. W. BLANCHARD conducting the burial services. She was the mother of Mr. E. A. SIMPKINS, county supervisor.

Stephen S. Quinerly Dead

Mr. Stephen S. QUINERLY died between 6 and 7 o'clock yesterday morning at his home in Kinston, aged 57 years, after a long illness. He leaves 5 children to mourn the loss of a kind father. Mr. QUINERLY was one of our wealthiest citizens. His wealth has been estimated from $50,000 to $75,000. His body will be buried in the cemetery today.

Rufus E. Best Dead

Mr. Rufus E. BEST of Shine, Greene county, was thrown from his road cart by his horse running away last Sunday. He was killed instantly, the fall breaking his neck. He was an influential citizen, and one of the leading Democrats of that section. He was about 50 years old.

Joseph Waller Dead

Died in Woodington Township, on Monday, Jan. 13th, Mr. Joseph WALLER, in his eighty-sixth year. He was one of the few survivors of the war of 1812.

Miles Hawkins Dead

Cove Items...Sept. 13; Mr. Miles HAWKINS, aged 92 years, died at the residence of his son-in-law, near Cove last Tuesday. Mr. HAWKINS was the oldest man anywhere in this section, if not in the county. He always enjoyed good health and up to a few days ago could walk ten or fifteen miles as quick as any young man.

Gertrude Newton Dead

Little Gertrude NEWTON, of Farmville, a patient of Dr. J. H. MORRILL, was carried to the Washington hospital between 7 and 8 o'clock last evening, suffering with an attack of appendicitis. Drs. JOSHUA and David TAYLOE immediately began an operation to save the patient, who was dangerously ill but she died this morning at about 5 o'clock. The little girl was about 10 years of age. Her remains will be sent to her home this afternoon on the 4 o'clock train.---Washington News.

Colored News----Funeral services for James TYSON, who died in Bridgeport, Conn. last Saturday, will be held in Greenville. Arrangements had not been completed today. He was the son of Rev. H. T. TYSON and Mrs. Olivia BAKER TYSON, 1604 Henry Street, Greenville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Thelma TYSON; seven brothers, Ned TYSON of Philadelphia, Heber and Raymond TYSON of New York City, Ben Franklin TYSON of Korea, Willie TYSON of Norfolk, Va., Joseph and Charles TYSON of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Mary BRYANT of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. Bertha HAUGHTON of Greenville.

Mrs. Pearl W. WILLIAMS, 89, died in Raleigh Sunday night. Funeral services will be at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be in Raleigh. Surviving are three grandchildren: Vance T. COREY Jr. of Winterville, Mrs. Charlotte WORTHINGTON of Greenville, and Billy COREY of Morehead City; and seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Nancy Michal Wilkinson Dead

Mrs. Nancy Michal WILKINSON, 55, died last night at 10:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. W. ANDREWS of near Farmville. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the daughter's home by Rev. J. B. ROBERTS, Primitive Baptist Minister of Farmville. Burial followed in the Joyner cemetery near the home. She spent practically her entire life in the Farmville community. Mrs. WILKINSON was a daughter of the late Howell and Martha TURNAGE JOYNER. Surviving are six children: Mrs. William L. PARKER and Mrs. Howard DEANS of Aberdeen, Mrs. D. W. ANDREWS, C. J. WILKINSON, J. M. WILKINSON, and Dalton WILKINSON of Farmville; also a sister, Miss Mary E. JOYNER of Farmville and a half-sister, Mrs. Pattie JOYNER of Greenville.
