J. J. Moore Released By Death
Eastern Reflector, Wed., Apr. 13, 1892
On Sunday night, just before nine o'clock, J. J. MOORE, a white man confined in the jail, died in his cell. He had been sick more than a week, and realizing that his condition was becoming dangerous Sheriff TUCKER on Saturday wrote to Gov. HOLT setting forth the circumstances and petitioned for the pardon of the prisoner. The Governor telegraphed Monday morning to the Sheriff that the pardon had been mailed and that MOORE could be released at once, but death had already released him. Sheriff TUCKER had the body shrouded and moved to one room of the Court House immediately after death. Monday the remains were taken home for burial. Mr. MOORE was serving a three months' sentence from January term of Pitt Superior Court for assault with deadly weapon. He was about 48 years old, and was postmaster of Farmville. His wife and a few friends were with him when he died.

Funeral services for J. S. SUTTON, about 60, who died of a heart attack at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. C. WILLIAMS, at Smithfield, Sunday morning at 2:30, were held at the Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church, near Winterville, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. J. C. MOYE, Free Will Baptist minister of Snow Hill, officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rosa CANNON SUTTON, and two daughters, Mrs. J. C. WILLIAMS of Smithfield, and Mrs. Dennis BOYD of Norfolk, Va., and a number of brothers and sisters.

Thomas Smith Killed

Saved His Neck

George DUDLEY who killed Redmond BLOW over a 10 cent card game in May, later captured near Richmond, tried at September term of Pitt Superior Court, convicted and by Judge CONNER sentenced to be hung December 4th, has escaped the gallows. Gov. HOLT last week commuted the sentence to a term of fifteen years imprisonment in the penitentiary. Deputy Sheriff R. W. KING took George to Raleigh Friday.
Worrell Moore Dead

Mr. Worrell MOORE, one of the county's oldest citizens, died last week at his home in Carolina township after a long illness. He was in his 81st year and had spent a useful life, being a prominent farmer and good citizen. He was a Confederate soldier, and a member of the Primitive Baptist church at Briery Swamp. He is survived by five children, Mr. T. L. MOORE, Mrs. Fannie BROWN, Mrs. Henry BROWN, Mrs. J. H. ROBERSON and Mrs. R. L. WOOLARD.
J. E. Randolph Dead

On Sunday morning Mr. J. E. RANDOLPH, who lived with his sons at House Station, 3 miles from Greenville, was found dead in bed. Mr. RANDOLPH was quite old and had been feeble for some time. He was a life-long Democrat, a gallant Confederate soldier and a good citizen. He leaves several children, all of whom are grown.
W. E. Boyce Dead

Mr. W. L. BOYCE, one of Pitt's most progressive farmers, died last Saturday from a stroke of paralysis which came upon him about a week ago. Mr. BOYCE was about 60 years of age and a true, honest and energetic farmer and is survived only by his wife. His body was laid to rest Sunday afternoon in the old Tugwell burying ground near his home in the presence of a large number of grief stricken friends and relatives. The funeral services were conducted by members of the Masonic Order, to which he has been one of its truest members for about 16 or 18 years.
Mrs. N. H. Beddard Dead

Mrs. N. H. BEDDARD, 70, of the Simpson community, died at Tayloe Hospital, Washington, last night. She suffered fatal burns while burning grass in her garden Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at the house Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. E. L. HILLMAN, Methodist minister of Rocky Mount, and the Rev. R. L. HARRIS of Grimesland, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in Greenville. Before marriage, Mrs. BEDDARD was Pennie CAMPBELL, daughter of the late J. H. and Mary TUCKER CAMPBELL of Simpson. She was a member of Salem Methodist Church at Simpson. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. W. MCLAWHORN of Hookerton, Mrs. Fred EDWARDS and Mrs. P. J. WORTHINGTON of Ayden, and 14 grandchildren, two of them serving in the armed forces.

Mrs. Maggie SUTTON BARBER, 80, died at the home of her son, Ola SUTTON of near Greenville, Monday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock after three years of declining health and two weeks of critical illness. Funeral services were conducted at the chapel of the S. G. WILKERSON & Sons Funeral Home this afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. Walter B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville, and burial was in the Wilkerson cemetery near Greenville. Mrs. BARBER was born and spent her entire life in Pitt County and was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Willie WILLIAMS of Oriental; two sons, Jim SUTTON of near Greenville and Ola SUTTON of near Pactolus; 21 grandchildren; 54 great grandchildren and 22 great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Lusetta DUDLEY HEATH, 82, widow of John F. HEATH, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. L. HADDOCK, near Chapman's Cross Roads at 2:30 o'clock this morning. She had been in declining health for several years and critically ill for the past four weeks. Funeral services will be conducted at Riverside Christian Church near Grifton at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon by Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist minister of near Bethel, and burial will be in the church cemetery, The body will remain at the S. G. Wilkerson and Sons Funeral Home and will be carried to the church one hour prior to the time of service. Mrs. HEATH was born near Vanceboro and lived in that community until twenty one years ago when she went to make her home with daughter at Chapman's Cross Roads in Pitt County. She was a member of Riverside Christian Church. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Willie SUTTON of Vanceboro, Mrs. Roy JOYNER of the Epworth community in Craven County, and Mrs. W. L. Mrs. Martha STOKES, 79, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. B. BARFIELD, in Greenville, at 5:15 o'clock Saturday morning. She had been critically ill for the past three weeks. Funeral services will be conducted at the Chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. The Rev. W. B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist Minister of Winterville will officiate, and funeral will be in Winterville Cemetery. Mrs. STOKES, daughter of the late Charles and Christine SMITH MANNING, spent all her life in the Winterville Community. Her husband, F. O. STOKES, died in 1933. She was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons: Joseph Roy STOKES of Ayden, and Jake S. STOKES of Winterville; a daughter, Mrs. C. B. BARFIELD of Greenville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grand children; and a sister, Mrs. Kate HUMBLES of Ayden.

Funeral for Ogden B. Wall

Funeral services for Ogden B. WALL, 33, will be conducted at the Epworth Methodist Church near Vanceboro at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon by the Rev LeRoy STANTON, the pastor, assisted by the Rev. W. R. CROWDER, a former pastor, and burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the Wilkerson Funeral Home and will be carried to the church two hours prior to the Vanceboro Masonic Lodge will have charge of the service at the grave. Mr. WALL died in Pitt Memorial Hospital at 11:25 o'clock Monday morning as a result of injuries received Friday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding was in collision with an automobile three miles south of Greenville on Highway 11. Mr. WALL, son of L. D. and Mamie JOHNSON WALL, was born and reared in the Clay Root community of Pitt County. He attended the Farm Life School in Vanceboro and joined the U. S. Navy in 1940. He served in the Navy until 1947, and four years of this time was spent in the Pacific area. He was later employed at Cherry Point but for the past three years had been engaged in farming in the Epworth community of Craven County. He was a member of the Vanceboro Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, the Ayden Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ayden Post of the American Legion, and Epworth Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Susan ARNOLD of Craven County, to who he married in 1948; a son, Jimmie B. WALL, and a daughter, Mary Bett WALL, both of the home; his parents; a sister, Mrs. Loyd WIGGINs of near Vanceboro; and his grandmother, Mrs. Jim J. WALL of the Clay Root community. Mule Brings Dead Man From Woods
Greenville, Aug. 10----Doremus H. HADDOCK, tenant on Key BROWN'S farm east of Greenville, died of a heart attack while hauling wood from lowgrounds to a tobacco barn. He was stricken in the woods while sitting in the back of the cart, with his legs dangling from the rear. HADDOCK had been dead some hours when the mule and cart (borrowed from a neighbor) came out of the woods, crossed two highways, passed the barn where the animal is stabled and headed toward a group pf persons working in tobacco, who discovered the body. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Burial was in the Mack SMITH cemetery near Chicod school. Mr. HADDOCK is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy HADDOCK; four sons, Robert Lee HADDOCK of Greenville, R. R. D. Joshua HADDOCK, U. S. N., stationed at Little Creek, Va., David HADDOCK, U. S. N., stationed at Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joseph HADDOCK of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur HANNAH of Greenville, Route 5, Miss Clara Belle HADDOCK and Mrs. Lonnie BROWN, of the home; two brothers, Joe HADDOCK of near Ayden and Heber HADDOCK of Beaufort county; and a sister, Mrs. Monk MILLS of Black Jack.

Mr. A. J. (Jack) WALL, 53, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville at 5:20 Sunday morning after five weeks serious illness. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Epworth Methodist Church near Vanceboro by the pastor, Rev. Leroy STANTON. Burial will be in Epworth Church-yard. Mr. WALL was a native of Pitt County and spent all his life in the Clay Root section. He was son of the late R. A. and Gertrude HADDOCK WALL, and was a farmer. He was a member of Timothy Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wilson WALL; two sons, Denton B. WALL of Wilmington and Reuben C. WALL of the U. S. Navy and now at Norfolk; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald A. LASSITER of Calico; three grandchildren; two brothers, A. D. and Daniel W. WALL, bot of Epworth community; and two sisters, Mrs. Lindsay S. SMITH of Clay Root, and Mrs. Fred H. LANE of Fort Barnwell.

Edward Coward Dead

Died in Greene County, N.C., on the 19th of July 1863, in the 78th year of his age, Edward COWARD. The deceased lived to a ripe old age, and has been heard to remark on several occasions within the past two years, that he had lived too long, from the fact that he has seen his country in its greatest prosperity, but regretted that he had lived long enough to see it on the verge of ruin and destruction. He leaves two sons, one daughter, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

WILLIS, pastor of Parker's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Gum Swamp Church Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the time of service. Mrs. WARREN, daughter of the late Jesse and Belle LITTLE MORRIS, was born and reared in Pitt County. She was a member of Gum Swamp Free Will Baptist Church. Luby J. Stocks Dead

The funeral of Luby J. STOCKS, 58, prominent merchant and farmer of Greene County, who died in a Kinston Hospital early Thursday, was held from the late residence about five miles from Hookerton at 5 p.m. Friday, with burial in the family cemetery. The Rev. Mr. MOYE of Snow Hill officiated. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Winnie STOCKS; two daughters, Mrs. Alice WARD of Richmond, and Mrs. Marie VANDIFORD of the home; and a son, James M. STOCKS of the home.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. L. B. MANNING, Free Will Baptist minister of Fountain. Burial will be in the Winterville Cemetery. Mrs. WILLIAMS, daughter of the late Jesse and Martha FLAKE TYSON, spent all her life in Pitt County. She was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. J. H. CREECH, Mrs. W. A. EASTWOOD, and Miss Duffie WILLIAMS, all of near Bruce, and Mrs. C. T. WELLS of near Winterville; a son, Walter WILLIAMS of near Ayden; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elsie ALLEN of near Greenville; and a brother, John Ivey TYSON of Maury.

Mrs. Hettie BARBER DAIL, 81, widow of the late Rev. W. A. DAIL, Free Will Baptist minister, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 after having been critically ill for the past several days. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church near Winterville by the Rev. Willis WILSON, the pastor, assisted by the Rev. Robert CRAWFORD, pastor of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church of Greenville. Burial will follow at the Reedy Branch Church Cemetery. Deacons of the church will be pallbearers. The body will be taken from the Wilkerson Funeral Home to the church two hours prior to the time of service. Mrs. DAIL lived all her life in the Winterville community. She was married to Mr. DAIL of Winterville in 1902 and he died in 1956. She was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church and had been active in the Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by four sons, Wilton H. DAIL of Norfolk, Va., Mayor Walter A. DAIL of Winterville, Jennings B. DAIL of Chapel Hill, and Billy W. DAIL of Greenville; five daughters, Mrs. Leslie HUMBLES and Mrs. Van JOHNSON Jr., both of Greenville, Mrs. Leon TRIPP of Winterville, Mrs. Walter ENNIS Jr. of Princeton, and Mrs. Raymond WEBB of Bell Arthur; 31 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.

CRAWFORD, pastor of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery. Mrs. ALLEN spent most of her life in Pitt County and had lived in the Bethel community for 18 years. She was a member of Flat Swamp Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, John I. ALLEN; three daughters, Mrs. R. G. BLAND, and Mrs. C. P. HARDY of Greenville, and Mrs. H. A. GREEN of New Bern; five sons, Lester and M. T. ALLEN of Greenville, Hassell D. ALLEN of Rocky Mount, John I. ALLEN Jr., of California and Tyree ALLEN of Washington, D. C.; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers, Marshall JOYNER of Winterville and Walter JOYNER of Shelmerdine.

Mc. D. Horton Passed Away

Mr. Mc. D. HORTON, Sr., age 74, at one time a large planter in the county, but for a long time since a resident of Farmville, passed away at his home Saturday, May 20th. Mr. HORTON was a Confederate volunteer under Captain WHITEHEAD in 1862, and served during many battles, including those of Gettysburg and the Wilderness. He is survived by a widow and three children, Mr. McD. HORTON, Jr., Mrs. William POLLARD and Mrs. James PARKER, all of Farmville.
Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards, Aged Colored Woman Dies

Mrs. Elizabeth ELLIS EDWARDS, 76, widow of the late Scott EDWARDS, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sophia CHAPMAN, of Ayden, at 10:45, after an illness of 16 years of rheumatism on June 14, 1943. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willis ELLIS of Pitt County. The funeral services were held at the Christian church at 2 p.m. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sophia CHAPMAN of Ayden, Mrs. Scartch SHAW of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Cherry WADDY of Richmond, Va.; two sons, King EDWARDS of Ayden, Lloyd EDWARDS of Reidsville; 30 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Ayden – Mrs. Kathleen SUMRELL VANN, 53, widow of Lewis VANN of Ayden died in Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville Wednesday at 8:55 p. m. following a long illness. Funeral services were held Friday at 3:30 p. m. at Britt's Funeral Chapel here by Rev. Goodwin MOORE, Christian minister of Washington, N. C. assisted by Rev. C. M. FOGLEMAN Jr., Ayden Methodist minister. Burial was in Ayden Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Addie S. SUMRELL and a member of Ayden Christian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Linda VANN of the home; three sisters, Hilda SUMRELL of the home, Mrs. Roy J. SUTTON of Greenville and Mrs. Frank SIDLE of Ithica, N. Y.; a brother, Frank SUMRELL of the U. S. Army, stationed in Georgia.

Another of Pitt county's Confederate soldiers and good citizens answered the final roll call this morning about 4 o'clock, when Mr. E. P. FLEMING passed away at his home five miles from Greenville. He was 72 years of age and is survived by three sons, Messers. J. E., C. E. and Bithel FLEMING. His wife died only two weeks ago and he soon follows to join her "Beyond the River."

Rev. W. A. DAIL, Free Will Baptist Minister of Winterville, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital at 1:15 o'clock Monday morning. He had been in failing health for several years, and critically ill for several weeks. He was 79. Funeral services will be conducted at Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church near Winterville at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by the pastor, the Rev, Henry MELVIN, assisted by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist Minister of Bethel. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Deacons of the church will be active pallbearers and Ministers of the Free Will Baptist Central Conference will be honorary pallbearers. The body will remain (illegible) , and will be carried to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mr. DAIL spent most of his life in the Winterville Community and was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church. He had held pastorate in several counties in eastern North Carolina and had been retired for the past 10 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Hettie L. BARBER to whom he was married May 21, 1902; five daughters, Mrs. Leslie HUMBLES, Mrs. Leon TRIPP, and Mrs. Van JOHNSON of Greenville, Mrs. Walter ENNIS of Smithfield, and Mrs. Raymond WEBB of Bell Arthur, four sons: Wilton DAIL of Norfolk, Va., Walter and Billy W. DAIL of Winterville, and Jenning DAIL of Chapel Hill; 28 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. F. R. MALLARD of Wilmington and Mrs. B. F. SUTTON of Farmville; and four brothers: E. Joe CRAFT of Winterville Route 2, died early this morning at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Funeral services will be held at the Britt Funeral Chapel in Ayden Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. N. D. BEAMAN of Snow Hill, assisted by the Rev. Perry CASE of Wilson. Burial will follow in the Craft family cemetery. CRAFT was a member of Relief Lodge 498, and Masonic rites will be held at the graveside. Survivors include four sons, Lloyd of Ayden Route 2, Gilmer of Winterville Route 2, J. R. of Ayden and Nobles of Winterville Route 2; four daughters, Mrs. Mark MANNING of Ayden Route 2, Mrs. Roy SMITH of Ayden, Mrs. Willie SHIVERS of Winterville and Mrs. Willis CARMAN of Ayden Route 1; five sister, Mrs. Sally A. MCLAWHORN of Ayden, Mrs. Fred BEAMAN of Snow Hill, Mrs. Frank MCLAWHORN of Winterville Route 2, Mrs. Will MCLAWHORN of Winterville Route 2, Mrs. Hope MANNING of Winterville Route 2. Mrs. John Ivey ALLEN, 72, of Greenville, died in a Lumberton Nursing Home at 2:10 Thursday morning. He had been in failing health since 1949 and critically ill for several months. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Friday afternoon at 4:30 by Elder W. E. GRIMES, Primitive Baptist Minister of near Greenville, assisted by the Rev. Robert B. CRAWFORD, pastor of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. ALLEN, a son of the late George T. and Jane NICHOLS ALLEN, was born and reared in the Bell Arthur community and was a farmer until ill health forced him to retire several years ago. He was married to Hattie JOYNER of near Farmville in 1905, and she died in 1955. Mr. ALLEN was a member of Flat Swamp Primitive Baptist Church and was a deacon for 25 years. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. R. G. BLAND and Mrs. Norlean A. HARDEE of Greenville, and Mrs. Harrell A. GREEN of New Bern; five sons: Ivey Lester ALLEN of New Bern, M. T. ALLEN of near Greenville, A. Tyree ALLEN of the U. S. Navy, now stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland, and John I. ALLEN Jr., of California, and Hassell D. He was a member of Saint's Delight Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. Mr. STOCKS was the son of the late Ellis and Harriet STOCKS. Funeral services will be held at Britt and Farmer Funeral Chapel at two o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. W. M. POLLARD of Greenville and the Rev. Raymond GASKINS of Ayden. John NOBLES, age 71, died suddenly Tuesday night about 7 o'clock at his home about five miles from Ayden. He went out to the smokehouse to get something and suffered a heart attack and never regained consciousness. Mr. NOBLES was the son of the late Wright and Betsy NOBLES. He was never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. W. L. NOBLES of this city, and Mrs. Addie JOLLY, with whom he made his home. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at this writing but will be conducted Thursday afternoon and burial will be in the Winterville Cemetery.

Mrs. Sallie BRAXTON AVERETTE, 72, widow of Amos R. AVERETTE, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital Thursday at 10:15 a. m. after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage a short time earlier. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m., at the Wilkerson Chapel by her pastor, Rev. Henry C. MELVIN, assisted by Rev. Robert B. CRAWFORD, Free Will Baptist minister of Greenville. Burial will be in Reedy Branch Church Cemetery. Mrs. AVERETTE was born, reared and spent nearly all her life in the Winterville community. She was the daughter of the late Jesse W. and Sarah EVERETT BRAXTON. She was married to Amos R. AVERETTE, who died in 1925. Mrs. AVERETTE had been a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church many years. Surviving are eight sons, Phillip, Joe, Elbert and Larry AVERETTE of Greenville, Ernest AVERETTE of Winterville, Amos AVERETTE of Scotland Neck and Eugene and Willie AVERETTE of near Greenville; two daughters, Mrs. John A. WHICHARD and Mrs. Jimmy PATTY of Greenville; three brothers, Henry and J. T. BRAXTON of Winterville and Luther BRAXTON of Oakland, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Will TRIPP and Mrs. Bessie MILLS of Greenville; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral For Mrs. Myrtle Ormond

Mrs. Myrtle HOLLOWAY ORMOND, 73, died at 3:30 Saturday afternoon in Greenville at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gray BLAND, on Glen Arthur Avenue. She had been ill for a week. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Wilkerson Chapel and burial was in Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. The Rev. Robert B. CRAWFORD, Free Will Baptist minister of Greenville, conducted the service. Mrs. ORMOND spent her early life in the Clay Root section of Pitt County, but after her marriage in 1904 had lived in the Washington community of Beaufort County. Mr. ORMOND died in 1931. She was a member of Timothy Christian Church near Clay Root. She is survived by three sons, Marvin ORMOND and Arthur ORMOND, both of Washington, and Leonard ORMOND of Kinston; four daughters, Mrs. Gray BLAND of Greenville, Mrs. Claud WOOLARD and Mrs. Charlie WOOLARD, both of Washington, and Mrs. Nan SUTTON of Greenville; 27 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Saul HADDOCK and Mrs. M. K. SMITH, both of Ayden; and three brothers, Ed SMITH and Sam SMITH of Ayden and Ernest SMITH of Washington.

Walter NOBLES, officiating. Interment followed in the Robertson cemetery. Mr. LOFTIN was the son of the late Needham and Donnie KIRKMAN LOFTIN. Mr. MOZINGO was born and reared in Greene County. He had been a resident of Pitt County for 17 years and was a farmer until ill health caused his retirement in 1946. He was a member of Salem Methodist Church in Simpson and the Withlacooche Tribe (No. 35) Improved Order of Red Men. Surviving are his wife; Mrs. Mary TRIPP MOZINGO; three sons: Clarence and Larry G. MOZINGO both of Greenville, and Allen D. MOZINGO of Kinston; six daughters: Mrs. Joe BEVERLY and Mrs. L. C. ALLEN, both of Kinston, Mrs. L. D. Mrs. Dora Smith GASKINS, 87, widow of Noah Edward GASKINS, died Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Raleigh BLAND on East Ninth Street. Funeral services were conducted in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p. m. Sunday by Dr. E. B. Fisher, pastor of the Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church. Burial was in the Vanceboro Cemetery. Mrs. GASKINS was a native of Craven County and had been a resident there until the death of her husband in 1950. Since that time she had made her home with her daughter in Greenville. She was a member of the Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church in Ernul, N. C., and was a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Greenville. Four of The Tripp Brothers Have Died Suddenly
Charlie M. TRIPP died suddenly of a heart attack at Tripp Garage Monday afternoon just before 2 o'clock. He was working on a car in the pit of the garage when he had the attack. Three of his brothers passed out suddenly and a fourth almost suddenly following a prolonged illness. Mr. TRIPP would have been 45 years of age Wednesday. The news of his sudden death was a shock to the community. He had been one of the operators of Tripp Garage since the death of his brother, N. C. TRIPP, who died suddenly on August 10, 1937, about the same time of day. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth BOYD TRIPP; three daughters, Hilda of Norfolk, Va., Norma and Shirley of the home; four sons, Charlie Jr., Robert Lee, Marshall, and McHenton TRIPP, all of Ayden; three sisters, Mrs. Letha BALDREE, Mrs. Venie ROWE, and Mrs. Hattie STOKES; three brothers, Levi R. TRIPP and Hinton TRIPP of Ayden and Leonard TRIPP of Shelmerdine. Funeral services were conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Rev. W. H. BRUNSON, pastor of the Christian Church and Rev. R. C. WIGGS, of the Free Will Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Ayden Cemetery.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church near Winterville by the Rev. Willis WILSON, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Robert Crawford, pastor of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church of Greenville. Burial will follow at the Reedy Branch Church Cemetery. Deacons of the church will be pallbearers. The body will be taken from the Wilkerson Funeral Home to the church two hours prior to the time of services. Mrs. DAIL lived all her life in the Winterville community. She was married to Mr. DAIL of Winterville in 1902 and he died in 1956. She was a member of the Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church and had been active in the Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by four sons, Wilton H. DAIL of Norfolk, Va., Mayor Walter A. DAIL of Winterville, Jennings B. DAIL of Chapel Hill, and Billy W. DAIL of Greenville; five daughters, Mrs. Leslie HUMBLES and Mrs. Van JOHNSON Jr., both of Greenville, Mrs. Leon TRIPP of Winterville, Mrs. Walter ENNIS Jr. of Princeton, and Mrs. Raymond WEBB of Bell Arthur; 31 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Addie BUCK, wife of Lonnie BUCK, died suddenly at her home near House Station at 11 o'clock Sunday night after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage three hours earlier. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mrs. BUCK spent all her life in Pitt county. She was first married to Charlie CLARK, annd he died in 1930. She was later married to Lonnie BUCK, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and two daughters by her first marriage: Walter Lee CLARK of near Greenville and Alton CLARK of Louisiana, Mrs. Lewis WOOD and Mrs. Bruce MOBLEY of Norfolk; and a daughter by her second marriage, Mabeline BUCK of the home; 6 grandchildren; a brother, Letha EVERETT of near Greenville; two half-brothers, Charlie EVERETT of near Greenville and Wilbur Lee EVERETT of near Grimesland; a sister, Mrs. Charlie ALLEN of Richmond; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Jess WHITLEY of near Grimesland and Mrs. J. D. ANDREWS of Greenville.

His nephews acted as pallbearers and his nieces were flower girls. Mr. MCLAWHORN, age 61, died suddenly Friday night of a heart attack. He was the son of the late Calvin and Nancy MCLAWHORN. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clyde MCLAWHORN; four sons, Warren, Perry, Lester and Howard MCLAWHORN; three daughters, Mrs. A. T. Aimar of Charleston, S.C., Mrs. D. G. Mrs. ADAMS was born and spent all of her life in Pitt County in the Cox's Mill Community and was a member of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She was a charter member of Pocahontas Tribe No. 35 of Greenville. Surviving are her husband, R. Ernest ADAMS; two sons, Russell R. and C. B. ADAMS, both of near the home; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. W. C. EVANS of near Greenville.

Mrs. SMITH spent most of her life in Pitt County in the Helen's Crossroads Community and was a member of the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons; William SMITH of Hartselle, Ala., and Linwood E. SMITH of Dallas, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Amie ROSS of Ayden, Mrs. Clara ALDRICH and Mrs. Carrie HARVE, both of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Christine BLAND of Greenville; three brothers, Hyman Lee DIXON of Greenville, Zeno DIXON of Black Jack and Will DIXON of Ayden; a sister, Mrs. Nettie WILLIAMS of Winterville; thirteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral of James D. GASKINS, 72, prominent retired farmer who died Friday at his home in Winterville, was held at the Winterville Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, with burial in the McCotter Cemetery in Grifton. The Rev. Perry CASE of the Disciples of Christ Church at Wilson, and the Rev. A. L. CHAPLIN, Ayden Methodist minister, officiated. Mr. GASKINS moved from Grifton to Winterville two years ago when he became an invalid. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jennie GASKINS; four sons, A. S. GASKINS of Roanoke Rapids, Jack B. GASKINS of Fayetteville, formerly of Kinston, C. T. GASKINS of Wilmington and R. P. GASKINS of New York; three daughters, Mrs. J. S. LIVERMAN of Lexington, S.C., Mrs. J. M. BURGESS of Ayden, and Faye GASKINS of Winterville; two brothers, Otis W. GASKINS of Charlotte and C. H. GASKINS of Johnson City, Tenn., and three grandchildren.

Mr. Jacob Sherrod MOORE, 78, a former resident of Ayden, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl KENNEDY, near Kinston, Monday night of last week and was buried here Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W. H. BRUNSON, pastor of the Ayden Christian Church and Rev. G. H. SULLIVAN of Wilson, officiated at the funeral services. Mr. MOORE is survived by one daughter with whom he has been making his home several years. He was for a long time on the Ayden Police force.

Mr. MILLS was a native of Pitt County, had lived in the Vanceboro community for many years and had lived in New Bern for the past twenty-five years. Mr. Robert WORTHINGTON, age 77, died at his home here Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock following several weeks serious illness. He had several heart attacks and his condition gradually grew worse until the end. Mr. WORTHINGTON was the son of the late William WORTHINGTON and Lucretia CANNON WORTHINGTON. He was an alumnus of the University of North Carolina and had been practicing his profession as a surveyor in this section for many years. He was a member of the Ayden Christian Church. Surviving are his wife the former Mrs. MUSE; one daughter, Mrs. Roberta MCKINNEY of New Bern; five grandchildren and one step-son, Seth MUSE of Newport News, Va. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the home conducted by Rev. W. H. BRUNSON. Burial was in the Ayden Cemetery.

Mr. HODGES, a native of the Old Ford community of Beaufort County, attended the Washington schools and North Carolina State University. A resident of Grifton since 1923, he farmed throughout his life. He served on the Grifton Town Board for several years, the A.S.C.S. Committee, and the Pitt County Board of Commissioners from June 1940 until December 1954. He served on the Pitt County ABC Board for thirty years, retiring July 1990. He was a longtime Mason and Shriner and was a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving: one daughter, Mrs. Betty HODGES HARPER of Grifton; one grandson, Drew S. HARPER III of Grifton; one granddaughter, Loede Brooks HARPER of Grifton; one great grandson, Drew S. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Dove E. LANCASTER; two daughters, Mrs. COX and Mrs. J. D. COX of Ayden; three sons, R. O. LANCASTER of Vanceboro, J. A. LANCASTER of New Bern, and L. M. LANCASTER of Cove City; also one sister, Mrs. Israel MOORE, of Ayden, survives.

Funeral Services At Epworth Today; Husband Ill In Richmond Hospital: Mrs. Maggie J. LANCASTER, wife of Ross O. LANCASTER, died yesterday afternoon at her home in Epworth after an illness of several weeks. Her husband who has also been ill lately, still undergoing treatment in a Richmond hospital, where he recently underwent an operation. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Epworth church by Rev. W. N. VAUGHN, pastor, with interment in Epworth cemetery. The deceased was a native of Crave county, the eldest of the twelve children of J. L. BlAND and the late Mrs. BLAND. She was 47 years of age, the first of the sons and daughters to die. Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Miss Julia LANCASTER, of Vanceboro; three sons, Alton and Wade LANCASTER, of Epworth, and J. Van LANCASTER of the United States Navy in Hampton Roads; her father, J. L. BLAND; two sisters, Mrs. Henry PITTMAN of Snow Hill, and Mrs. Henry HUFF of Morehead City; and nine brothers, J. T. Wife of City Official Passes Before Medical Aid Could Reach Her -
Mrs. Helen Ilean MALONEY GODFROY, wife of F. G. GODFROY, superintendent of the city water and light plant, died suddenly Tuesday morning at her home at 401 Spencer avenue. For the past three years Mrs. GODFROY had a serious heart condition, from time to time had been confined to her bed, and at times had been critically ill. But on the morning of her death she had arisen and dressed, planning to go out into her yard. From the bedroom she called for a nurse and friend, Mrs. W. B. BARTLING, to come to feel her pulse, as she did not think her heart was beating right. Mrs. BARTLING called for a physician. Just as the doctor walked into the room, Mrs. Godfroy, then sitting on the edge of her bed, fell over on the bed from a heart attack that caused instant death. Born Nov.. 4, 1877, at Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. GODFROY was married there July 20, 1903. She and her husband moved to New Bern almost 35 years ago, and had since then resided in the same house in Ghent. A loyal member of St. Paul's Catholic church, she was well known for her philanthropy and charity. She was a member of the Women's club, and took special interest in her work with the Garden club. As a neighbor and friend, "Miss Nellie" was one of the most beloved citizens of this section. Funeral arrangements had not been made Tuesday afternoon, pending telephone conversations with an only son, Richard GODFROY, of Cleveland Ohio, who is expected to come to the services. ANTIOCH RESIDENT PASSES SUDDENLY: T. H. FULCHER died at his home in the Antioch section of Craven county Monday afternoon. He had been in ill health for some time, but had at work on his farm Monday. Funeral service was held from the home Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. M. C. PRESCOTT conducting the services, assisted by Rev. W. H. EVERETT. Mr. FULCHER is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie PIPKIN FULCHER; four daughters, Mrs. Howard TOLER of Ernul; Mrs. C. H. TOLER of New Bern, Mrs. George GASKINS of Route 1, New Bern, and Mrs. Herbert CATON of Bridgeton; four sons, Nat FULCHER of Bridgeton, Richard, Lynwood and Arthur, all of Route 1, New Bern. WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF VANCEBORO DIES:
Vanceboro, Aug. 16 - Following five days of critical illness, Furney POWELL, 73, died at his home here at 8:55 o'clock Sunday morning. Funeral services are to be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock by his pastor, W. H. BRADY, Methodist minister here. Interment in the Vanceboro cemetery with members of the Vanceboro Masonic Lodge No. 433 serving as pallbearers and having charge of the services at the grave. Mr. POWELL is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lizzie FORREST POWELL; five sons, Clayton and Furney Jr., of Vanceboro, Clinton and Cyrus of New Bern and Gray of the United States Navy and now in Chicago; three daughters, Mrs. Mollie HARPER and Mrs. Mabel JOYNER of Vanceboro and Mrs. Benny WILLIAMS of Washington, N. C.; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. For 23 years Mr. Powell was a rural mail carrier in Craven county, retiring in 1935. Born and reared in the Vanceboro community, he spent his entire life here. Following a serious heart attack at his office shortly before 11 o'clock Monday morning, F. G. GODFROY, superintendent of the city water and light systems, passed away at St. Luke's hospital here at 2:05 o'clock Monday afternoon. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at mid-afternoon. Mr. GODFROY'S death followed that of his wife, also the result of a heart attack just a few months ago. He was about 68 years of age. The water and light superintendent came to New Bern from Florence, S. C. in 1917. He was a native of Michigan. Under his superintendency the New Bern water and light systems have been greatly expanded and have grown in revenue produced for the city. Recently, because of the condition of Mr. GODFROY, and the condition of the Water and light plants under the heavy demand of increased defense area population, he has been under a heavy strain. Frequently he has been called upon day and night to keep the city power plant in operation. Contributed by Bill Bland.

Vanceboro, March 1 - Funeral services are to be held here Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock for Mrs. Della Elizabeth POWELL, 69, who died at her home here Tuesday afternoon after a long illness. The services will be conducted by Rev. W. H. BRADY, pastor of the Vanceboro Methodist church, and Rev. J. L. HODGES, pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist church in New Bern, and burial will be in the Vanceboro cemetery. Born near Hookerton, in Greene county, Mrs. POWELL came to Vanceboro with her parents while she was a child. She married Furney POWELL of Vanceboro in 1891, and he passed away last August. She was a member of the Methodist church and active in church affairs until her health failed. She is survived by three daughters, five sons, one sister, one brother, 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CAPT. JESSE BLAND DIES IN PLANE CRASH TUESDAY
Returning home from a visit with his mother who is ill, Capt. Jesse BLAND, 27, of the United States Army Air Corps, stationed at the Thomasville, Ga., Army Air Base, was killed in a crash landing about a mile from his home base Tuesday night between 9:30 and 10 o'clock, according to word received here Wednesday by the victim's mother, Mrs. Rosa J. BLAND. There were few details available here Wednesday. Captain BLAND came to New Bern Tuesday, arriving about 1 o'clock and after a visit with his mother, he left returning to Thomasville about 4:30 o'clock. Nearing his base he ran into a flash storm and crashed in an effort to put his plane down in a field on a plantation near Thomasville. The body was brought to New Bern for funeral service and burial. It was accompanied by a military escort but the time of arrival was not known here Wednesday. Mrs. BLAND, who was the former Miss Eunice WILLIAMS of Tallahassee, Fla., accompanied by a sister, was to leave Thomasville Wednesday night for New Bern. Captain BLAND, one of New Bern's most popular young men, had been in the air corps for four years. After graduating from the New Bern High School he entered N. C. State college and after his junior year he enlisted in the air corps. He received his training as a fighter plane pilot and was commissioned at Summerville, Ala. After several months training in the states he was among the first American fliers to be sent to the south west Pacific area. He served for 17 months overseas and was awarded a number of decorations for distinguished service. He returned to the states more than a year ago and has been stationed at Thomasville.

Funeral services for Capt. Jesse BLAND, 27, who was killed Tuesday night in the crash landing of his plane near the Thomasville, Ga., Army Air Base, will be held at Centenary Methodist church here Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, it was announced Thursday. Rev. W. A. CADE, pastor of the church, will conduct the services, and interment in Cedar Grove cemetery will follow. Pallbearers will be Eugene MCSORLEY Jr., McRay LANCASTER, Jack WHITE, Charles NELSON, Harry FAULKNER and J. Gaskill MCDANIEL. Word of the accident reached his mother, Mrs. Rosa J. BLAND, here Wednesday. Captain BLAND had been to this city on a visit to his mother and left at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Noah Edward GASKINS, 79, died at his home near Vanceboro at 12:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon following three weeks of illness. Mr. GASKINS was born and raised in Craven county and was a member of the Macedonia Free Will Baptist church. His widow is Dora SMITH GASKINS. The funeral service will be held at the church of the deceased at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, pastor, and Rev. J. R. BENNETT of Bridgeton, a former pastor of the church, will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Vanceboro cemetery. The body will remain at the S. G. Wilkinson funeral home in Greenville until it is carried to the church one hour prior to the funeral. Active pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible class of the church and flower bearers will be members of the Ladies Aid society, circles one and two of the church. Surviving Mr. Gaskins in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mrs. R. H. BLAND of Greenville, one son, Victor GASKINS of near the home, one brother, Ernest GASKINS of near Vanceboro, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Prominent Retired Farmer and Landowner Of Craven County Dies Suddenly---
Jesse Fountain BRAXTON of 208 South Front street died at Kafer Memorial hospital at 9 o'clock Friday morning after a short illness. He was taken to the hospital at midnight Thursday and his death was unexpected. Sixty-seven years old, Mr. BRAXTON was a native of Pitt county and a retired farmer and landowner here. He lived in Craven county since 1910. He was a former member of the county board of education, a former member of the Fort Barnwell school committee and a member of the local Executive club. Funeral services will be conducted from the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The minister has not been decided upon. Burial will follow in Kinston. Mr. Braxton is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alta SIMMONS BRAXTON, five brothers; E. W. and Henry BRAXTON of Winterville, J. Mrs. Emma A. JONES, formerly a resident of 710 Pollock street in New Bern, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lillian FRYMOYER in Baltimore. A native of Switzerland, Mrs. Jones spent most of her life in New Bern and for the past year had lived with her daughter at 2900 Emerald Road in Baltimore. She was the widow of Nicholas JONES and was a member of the Centennary Methodist church. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of the Willis funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. J. A. RUSSELL officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove cemetery. Mrs. Annie GOODING PITTMAN, a resident of Craven county who grew up under the Yankee occupation of New Bern, died at 3 p. m. Sunday at her home near Clarks following a five week illness. Mrs. PITTMAN, 97, was born June 18, 1857, a daughter of the late Council and Julia LANE GOODING of Craven county. She had lived been a resident of the Clarks community for the past 38 years. Her husband, Charles Manley PITTMAN, died in 1950. Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. J. W. HUMPHREY of Beaufort and Mrs. R. W. DAIL of Snow Hill; three sons, H. C., Robert B. and James K. PITTMAN, all of Clarks; 26 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The body will lie in state at the home until time for services, to be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday. Rev. Ralph FLEMING Jr., pastor of the Clarks Methodist church, and Rev. William WELLS, former pastor of the Trinity Methodist church, will officiate. COX of Edenton and Mrs. Grover C. COX of Kinston. The funeral service will be conducted at the Vanceboro Christian church at 2:30 p. m. Thursday by the pastor, Rev. Horace QUIGLEY assisted by Rev. John GOFF, pastor of the Ayden Christian church. Burial will be in the Epworth cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Ellis BEDSWORTH, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native of Brunswick county, she lived in the Vanceboro community since 1912 and was first married to Tom BELLAMY. She was later married to James H. TRIPP who died in 1927 and was later married to Jesse J. MORRIS in 1942, who died in 1951. She is survived by two sons, J. C. BELLAMY and Bennett TRIPP of Vanceboro; two daughters, Mrs. Tom STALLINGS Jr., of Snow Hill and Mrs. Willis G. A native of Craven County, he was the son of the late Aleck CATON and Mrs. Julia WILLIS CATON. He operated the Harvey Brothers hardware store in Bridgeton. Mr. CATON is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Pearl CATON; a son, Hubert G. CATON of New Bern; a daughter, Mrs. Tommie NELSON of Minnesott Beach; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa HEATH of New Bern, Mrs. Ida DENNIS of Route 1, Newport and Mrs. Will PEELE of Royal. Joseph Thomas IPOCK, 67, of Route 2, New Bern, died in Craven County Hospital Saturday night at 11:25 o'clock. He was a son of the late James H. IPOCK and Bettie WETHERINGTON IPOCK. He was a member of the Beech Grove Methodist Church, a trustee, steward in the church, served the church as treasurer and superintendent of the Sunday School and he was a member of the pastoral relations committee. Ipock also served as a member of the Craven County Agricultural Stabilization Committee, and a farmer. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillie C. IPOCK; two sons, Joe Allen and Robert A. IPOCK of Route 2, New Bern; one daughter, Miss Betty Hart IPOCK, student at Meredith College, Raleigh; one brother, Leslie IPOCK of Mt. Olive; one sister, Mrs. C. D. LANCASTER of New Bern; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Beech Grove Methodist Church today at 3 p. m. with Rev. Ellis BEDSWORTH and Rev. Raymond Carr RUSSELL, 88, of Route 3, New Bern, died Sunday at his home. Funeral service will be held today at 3 p. m. from Fort Barnwell Baptist Church by Rev. Neil BRELAND. Interment followed in church cemetery. He was a retired farmer. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Esther JOYNER RUSSELL; one daughter, Mrs. Owen FULCHER Jr. of New Bern; one grand daughter, Mrs. Lewis IPOCK of New Bern; two brothers, Brantley RUSSELL OF New Bern and L. Clinton Harvey HAWKINS, 68, of Route 1, Cove City, died today at 5:30 a. m. at Craven County Hospital. He was a member of Core Creek Free Will Baptist Church, Cove City, a retired farmer and native of Craven County. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. from Cotten Funeral Chapel by Rev. Gilbert COOK and Rev. Rudy SHEPPARD. Interment will follow in the White Cemetery at Cove City. Pallbearers will be Rodney SUTTON, Dan SUTTON, Larry MCCOY, Vernon HAWKINS, Harold HAWKINS and Owen HAWKINS. ROBERSONVILLE----Joe Vance MOYE, 86, tobacconist, died in a Greenville hospital Wednesday morning at 7:30.He was employed by a Williamston tobacco firm recently. Mr. MOYE was born in Pitt County and spent his early life there farming. He entered the tobacco business as a young man, operating warehouses in Tarboro, Robersonville, Williamston and Georgia. He had been living here about 40 years. He was the son of the late Martha Ann SMITH and Josephus MOYE. Funeral services will be held from the home Friday at 3:30 p.m. with burial in the Robersonville Cemetery. The Rev. M. A. WOOLARD, the Rev. Mr. MELVIN of Reedy Branch, and the Rev. Wilbur WALLACE will officiate. Mr. MOYE was a member of the Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. R. J. LANGLEY and Mrs. Dell GRAY of Robersonville and Mrs. Dennis MARLOWE of Delaware, Ohio; one son, R. J. Triple Drowning in Tar River

On Sunday Allen FORBES and his son Charles, together with Henry ARNOLD, Charles BRAXTON and Louis ALLEN, all white, went to Bell's seine beach, about three miles below town, on Tar River. Late in the afternoon the five men crossed the river in a canoe. Just before reaching land the boat took water and sunk. Louis ALLEN and Charles BRAXTON swam ashore and saved themselves. Allen FORBES and Henry ARNOLD had also nearly reached a place of safety when they saw Charles ALLEN, who was a cripple, struggling in the water and went to his aid. The three were drowned. Tidings of the accident reached town some later and a messenger went out to the home of Mr. FORBES to advise his wife of it. When the messenger reached the home he found mourning already there, an eight months old child having died about the time the drowning occurred. All the bodies were found today.

Jesse Braxton Answers Final Call

Death continues to take its toll from the thinning ranks of followers of Lee and Jackson in this county. Yesterday morning Jessie BRAXTON, 95, one of the eight or nine remaining followers of the Grey, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. K. BRADSHAW, near Cox's Mill. Death came to the veteran following a stroke of paralysis about two years ago. Since that time he had been confined to his bed. Death was not unexpected. Funeral services were conducted from his late home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, and members of the Pitt County Post of the American Legion acted as pall bearers. The services were attended by members of the local U.D.C. Mr. BRAXTON was one of the first from Pitt county to respond to the call of the South, and he took part in practically the entire conflict. He evinced an active interest in the reunion of veterans until illness necessitated his confinement. He was well-known in the section in which he resides and held in high esteem by a host of friends.

Mr. W. J. FLEMING, 77, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl ABEE last night after an illness of several days. Funeral services were conducted from the home this afternoon at 2 o'clock by Elder S. B. DENNY, interment following in the family burying ground. Mr. FLEMING was well known throughout the county being held in highest esteem by a host of friends. He was a successful farmer having made his home on his farm until the past few years since which time he has made his home in Greenville. He was a Mason and a Confederate Veteran. In early manhood he married Miss Effie FLEMING who died three years ago. The deceased is survived by four sons, and three daughters, Messers. Jess, Clair, Sidney, and Guy FLEMING; Mesdames Claude WEST, Walter PATRICK and Carl ABEE. Three sisters, Mesdames Rebecca BROWN, Lucinda NOBLES and Hulda STATON also survive.

John T. JENKINS, son of William and Susan JENKINS was born in Martin county October 10, 1845 and died June 28, 1923, making his stay on earth some over 77 years. He fought bravely in the civil war for 18 months, evben going before he was called at the early age of seventeen. Soon after the war he married Miss Fannie JAMES and moved to Pitt county near Leens, where he spent the remainder of his life quietly on the farm. To this union were born three children, two W. J. and J. R. JENKINS are still living. His second wife was Miss Malinda WHICHARD who died about 12 years ago leaving three children, Mrs. Eli RODGERS, Mrs. Ernest CARSON and B. E. JENKINS, all who are still living. He was very industrious, energetic [remainder missing]

She is survived by two sons, Denton B. Wall of Ayden and Rubin C. Wall of Newport News, Va.; one sister Bessie W. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Monsignor James R. JONES. Burial will be 10 a. m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Mr. Shade S. JACKSON was attacked with acute indigestion Saturday night and died Monday morning. Mr. JACKSON was well stricken in years, but at all times was jovical and noted for industry and sobriety. His remains were interred at the Jackson cemetery near his old home in Jacksontown. He leaves a widow and children. About thirty years ago he was happily married to Miss Allice NEGAN [NELSON], daughter of Mr. Nimrod NEGAN [NELSON]. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved Mr.JACKSON was an old Confederate soldier and a member of the Free Will Baptist church.

Jesse G. GODLEY, 60, died in Washington hospital last night at 10:40 o'clock following a stroke of apoplexy yesterday. Graveside funeral services and burial took place in the Godley family cemetery several miles below Chocowinity on the Aurora highway at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon. Services were conducted by Rev. Duffy TOLER, Free Will Baptist minister of Chocowinity. Mr. GODLEY was born, reared, and spent his entire life around Chocowinity, except for the last few months, when he had been doing some work on government projects in Norfolk, Va. He was a member of the Haw Branch Union Chapel. Surviving are six sons, Woodrow, Preston and Charlie GODLEY of Chocowinity, Nathan GODLEY of near Greenville, Lindsay and Jasper GODLEY of near Grimesland; five daughters, Mrs. Blate HARDING and Miss Evelyn GODLEY of Chocowinity, Mrs. Levy WILSON of near Greenville; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William Henry LEWIS of near Chocowinity and Mrs. Bill ELKS of Grimesland.
Mrs. Bessie Wilson Forrest Dead

CLAYROOT -- Mrs. Bessie WILSON FORREST, 95, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, at Britthaven of Washington. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. FORREST, a Pitt County native and longtime resident of the Clayroot community, farmed all of her life. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Quilting Ladies of the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Clifton "Cliff" FORREST, to whom she was married in 1926; and a daughter, Elva F. HADDOCK MATTHEWS. Surviving are a daughter, Ann FORREST BALL and her husband, Tom, of Cary; four sons, Aubrey FORREST and his wife, Marji, of Grifton, Kelly FORREST and his wife, Pandora, of Clayroot, NC, J. B. FORREST and his wife, Mamie, of Clayroot, NC, and Gerald FORREST and his wife, Mary Grey, of Greenville; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren; and step-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Vanceboro. Contributed by Bill Bland.
Frederick Benjamin Satterthwaite Dead

Ayden, Oct. 28-----Frederick Benjamin SATTERTHWAITE, 57, of Ayden, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. P. DAVENPORT here at 7:30 Saturday night was buried yesterday afternoon at 3:30 in the old family burying ground on the Cheshire farm in Edgecombe county. The funeral service was conducted from the home of Mrs. DAVENPORT, by Rev. A. C. D. NOE of St. James' Episcopal Church, Ayden. He is survived by three children, J. H. SATTERTHWAITE and Mrs. F. P. DAVENPORT of Ayden and Mrs. L. D. WATERS of Tarboro; one sister, Mrs. Annie EDMUNDSON, Tarboro, and 14 grandchildren. Mr. SATTERTHWAITE, was reared in Edgecombe County and was a successful farmer until a few years ago when he moved to Ayden to live with his children, his wife, Rebecca LEGGETT having died some years previous. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in his home community.
Mrs. Lola Mae Dixon Foy Dead

Vanceboro--Mrs. Lola Mae DIXON FOY, 93, died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at Craven Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel at Vanceboro by Rev. John BRICK of Riverside Christian Church and Rev. Julia DEES of Epworth United Methodist Church. Burial will be private. Mrs. FOY, the daughter of the late Jesse Dudley and Olive GRIFFIN DUDLEY, was born February 24, 1905 in Craven County, N.C. She was a lifelong resident of the Epworth Community of Craven County. She graduated from Farm Life School and attended East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University in Greenville. She was married to Paul G. DIXON, who died in January, 1954 and was later married to Odell FOY who died in April, 1969. Mrs. Foy taught for several years in the Craven County Schools which included Epworth, Jasper and Fort Barnwell. She was a longtime member of Riverside Christian Church where she taught Sunday School. She also taught Sunday School at Epworth United Methodist Church. She is survived by, a daughter, Mrs. Joyce DIXON ZEH and her husband, John D. ZEH of Raleigh; sister, Mrs. Laura DUDLEY STOKES of Fuquay-Varina; a grandson, Mr. Donovan P. ZEH of Kinston; a granddaughter, Mrs. Freda Joy KIRKMAN and her husband, Donald A. KIRKMAN of Pine Knoll Shore, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Doris FOY CABE and her husband, Wade CABE of Fuquay-Varina. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Vanceboro Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 3150 NC Highway 118, Vanceboro, N.C. 28586; or Riverside Christian Church, 404 N.E. Mrs. Frances Carter Dixon Dead

Frances Carter ''Granny'' DIXON, 94, of the 600 block of George Washington Hwy., South, died March 20, 1999, in Chesapeake. Born in Laurinburg, N.C., she was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and its Euzelian/Ruth Bible Class. She was a former member of the United Ostomy Society. The widow of Louland Etheridge DIXON Sr., she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John D. JONES of Chesapeake; a son, L.E. DIXON Jr. of Sedalia, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Thomas E. JONES Sr., Ronald O. JONES, Neil C. DIXON Jr., Richard T. DIXON, Barbara Ann AIKENS, Keith DIXON, Kim DIXON and Michael DIXON; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two daughters, Julia Frances DIXON and Annie Elizabeth DIXON, and two sons, Richard F. DIXON and Neil C. DIXON. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernie MYERS. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Epworth, N.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake, Greenbrier Chapel, and at the residence at all other times. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Deep Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, the United Ostomy Foundation or to a charity of one's choice. Contributed by Bill Bland.
