Morgan County Information

Morgan County, the seventy-third in order of formation, is located in east-central Kentucky.
It covers 382 square miles and is the seventh largest county in the State. It is bounded by Rowan, Elliott, Menifee, Bath and Floyd counties in 1882, and during 1843-69 parts of Morgan County were used to form six of the surrounding counties. The county was named for General Daniel Morgan, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

West Liberty was established as the county seat in 1824. The county is located in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountain Range and is characterized by beautiful rolling hills and wide valley. In the spring the hills are a mass of red and white colors produced by redbud and dogwood trees in full bloom; and in the fall the hills display brilliant colors of red, orange and brown from the maples, sumac, gum, oak and hickory trees.

The major highways are KY 7, US 460 and the Mountain Parkway with cattle and burley tobacco as the main agricultural pursuits and timber production is a major industry. The population of this rural county was 10,019 in 1970; 12,103 in 1980; and 11,648 in 1990. The County has a local hospital, the Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital; two factories, two banks, five elementary schools, a new high school and a middle school that is located in Index, KY. Also a new prison, East Kentucky Correctional Complex, was built in 1987. It is the largest prison in the state and it is located along Index Hill at the south end of West Liberty.

Morgan County has celebrated it's 30th Annual Sorghum Festival in 2001 on Main Street in West Liberty.

County offices are located in the old Morgan County High School building, picture above, that was built with WPA funds in the mid 30's. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave the dedication address. This building was renovated in 1994 with a one million dollar grant and now houses the offices of the County Judge/Executive, PVA, Sheriff, County Court Clerk and County Surveyor as well as the Extension Office and Morgan County Water District. The County Clerk's office provides records of marriages, deeds, deaths, births, wills, etc. that they will provide for a minimal cost.
