Crockett, Morgan Co., KY
COMMUNITY
LIFE IN MORGAN COUNTY
Communities were named in many different ways. They may have been named for
their first settlers, such as Williams Creek, Lacy Creek, and Smith Creek.
They may have been named because of some geographical feature, such as Lick
Branch, Lick Fork, Rush Branch and Laurel Fork. Or they have been named in
honor of some event that occured there, such as War Creek. Some were named
by the early settlers in honor of the old community they had left,
like Grassey Creek. Some were named by a business or industry that started
the community such as Lenox and Cannel City.
Some of those communities have a clear and distinct boundary line, while
others blend into other communities gradually and the change is scarcely
realized. Those with a natural Boundary such as a creek or tributary are
clear and distinct, while those centered around a school, church, or post
office are not clear.
Brief histories have been collected by students of the author of many of
these small communities. The students agreed for these research papers to
be used in this report and were given class credit for their report. It must
be realized that such a compilation cannot be absolutely accurate, since
most of the information is traditional, and few written records are available
concerning local history. So most of the facts are what the students found
out about their own community by interviewing the older citizens.
By looking at a map of Morgan County, one will observe that it is bordered
on the east by Johnson and Lawrence Counties. An attempt will be made to
give the report of each community as it appears from the east to the west
of the county.
