This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the June 8, 2017 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

Kimberly Patrick from Kansas came to our historical society library last week. Her Patrick ancestor was William "Salty Bill" Patrick who was also Todd Preston’s wife Phyllis Prater Preston’s ancestor. Salty Bill’s home later became the home of Todd and Phyllis Preston and is where they raised their family.

Kimberly’s grandparents were Ishmael Patrick and Julia Lemaster who were married in 1931 Magoffin County. Ishmael was a son of Floyd Patrick and Georgia Ann Brown and they married in Magoffin County on August 18, 1904. Floyd was born in 1877 and died in 1932, a son of James Madison "Matt" Patrick and Amanda Adams. Georgia was born in 1880 and died in 1967.

Matt Patrick was a son of William "Salty Bill" Patrick and Eliza Bays. Salty Bill (b. 1830 d. 1915) was a son of Richard Patrick and Eleanor Kennard. The 1910 Magoffin census shows William Patrick as age 79, widowed, on Coal Branch in Salyersville, KY in the home of Reuben and Sola Patrick.

Richard Patrick was a son of Jeremiah Patrick and Sarah Blair. Richard’s wife Eleanor was a dau of James Kennard and Mary Patrick. James was born in 1742 VA and died 1814 in Floyd Co. KY. James’ wife Mary "Polly" lived in the home of John and Martha Patrick in 1850. Vital Statistics records show she was born in New River, Virginia and died at age 90 on 29 Jun 1857.

Georgia Ann Brown Patrick’s father, Daniel "Dan" Brown, was born in 1849 and died 1939, a son of Thomas Brown and Elizabeth McClain. Dan’s son John Brown (1881-1948) was the step-grandfather of Jimmie Allen, a local historian and member of our historical society. John was married to Nannie McFarland Flint, first wife of Salyersville photographer Winn Flint.

Dan married in Magoffin County on 2 Nov 1878 to Mary Power/s b. 1861 d. 1914, a dau of James Power and his 2nd wife Nancy Jane Blair. James was a son of Lewis Power, Sr. and Elizabeth Prater. Nancy Jane was a dau of William Blair and Sarah Spradlin.

Our visitor Kimberly was here to learn more about her Lemaster heritage. Her grandmother Julia Lemaster Patrick was a dau of Warren Harvey Lemaster (b. 1880 d. 1951) and Nancy Katherine Tackett. They were married in Magoffin County on 29 Dec 1898. Warren H. was a son of Richard M. Lemaster and Frances Jane "Frankie" Crace. Warren and Nancy are buried in the Green Adams Cemetery on New Rt. 460 & Rockhouse Road. Warren Lemaster’s death was reported in the 6 Apr 1951 issue of the Salyersville Independent. The obituary of his wife Nancy Katherine appears in the 1 July 1955 issue of that newspaper. The obituary gives the names of her parents as William Tackett and Liddie Adams. She was born 22 Mar 1881 and died 21 Jun 1955. The article gives the date of death of her late husband Warren as 4 Apr 1951.

Warren and Nancy were the parents of 16 children: (1) Curt Lemaster, (2) D. E. Lemaster, (3) Eula Patrick, (4) Una McCormick, (5) Julia Patrick, (6) Tressie Reed, (7) Jessie Stapleton, (8) Bessie Whitt, (9) Wiley B. Lemaster. Her deceased children at the time of her death were: (10) Bulah Lemaster, (11) Richard Lemaster, (12) Warren Lemaster, Jr., (13) Dewey Lemaster, (14) Edgar Lemaster, (15) Earnie Lemaster and (16) Kernie Lemaster.

We found three of Warren and Nancy’s sons listed in our Salute to Magoffin County Veteran’s books. Son Wiley B. Lemaster was born in 1919 and died 1983, a private in the US Army, serving in Korea. Son Kearnie Lemaster was born in 1918 and died in 1951 in an auto accident in Louisiana. At the time of his death he was a Sergeant and had served with the 1st Armored Division of Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark’s Fifth Army in Italy. Son Earnie Lemaster was born in 1923 and was killed in action in the Philippines during World War II. His body was returned to the family in 1951 and was buried in the Adams Cemetery on Rockhouse on 1 Mar 1951.

Richard M. Lemaster was born 7 Oct 1859 to Ambrose Lemaster and Sarah Frances "Granny Fanny" Shaver. Ambrose was first married to Nancy B. McGuire b. 4 Mar 1814, dau of James McGuire and Sarah "Sallie" Coffee. Ambrose was a son of Elijah Lemaster and Elizabeth Borders. We have seen her surname listed as "Ghent" so more research is needed on this family.

Warren’s parents, Ambrose Lemaster and Fannie Shaver, were married 1 Feb 1851 in Johnson Co. KY. They are buried in the Lemaster Cemetery at Falcon, KY behind the site of the former Falcon School. Their son Richard Lemaster is said to be buried there but there is no marker for his gravesite.

Warren’s wife Nancy’s father William J. Tackett (1846-1915) married 17 May 1865 in Magoffin County to Lydia Margaret "Liddie" Adams. She was born in 1846 and died in 1900, a daughter of Jackson Adams and Nancy Cooper. Liddie was a granddaughter of Daniel Adams and also William Cooper.

William J. Tackett was a son of James Tackett (25 Dec 1816-1870) and Nancy A. Blevins (1825-1912). James Tackett was a son of Lewis Tackett and Lucy Smith; his wife Nancy was a daughter of William Blevins and Avery Collins. James and Nancy are shown in the 1850 Carter Co. KY census; by 1860 they lived in Johnson County and the 1870 Magoffin census has them listed in Precinct 2.

More information on any of these families would be welcome. Please contact the Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email: [email protected])
