This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the NOVEMBER 19, 2015 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We’ve had a spell of "Indian Summer" weather these last couple of weeks and all of us enjoyed the nice warm sunshine. We got a little time to get outside and see some of the old homesteads and cemeteries we’ve been writing about.

We had a Hoskins family stop in our historical society library recently. They were a son and daughter of Carl Hoskins, Isabelle Hansing of Portsmouth, OH and Mark Hoskins of Wheelersburg, OH. With them was a cousin Zanita Watts also of Wheelersburg, OH.

Carl Hoskins was a son of John Wesley Hoskins and Maria Theresa Arnett so they have a great many relatives in our county and surrounding areas.

We will explore Carl’s father’s line first. The late David Risner contributed extensive material on the Hoskins family for our Legends in Blue and Gray Civil War soldier’s book. Carl was the son of John Wesley Hoskins b. 1885, a son of Allen Hoskins and Forest Rose Whitaker.

Allen Hoskins was born in 1856, a son of Civil War soldier John Robert "Bob" Hoskins and his first wife Sarah Allen whom he married in 1846 Floyd Co. KY. Bob Hoskins was born in 1824 on South Fork of Quicksand in present-day Breathitt Co. KY but was then a portion of Perry Co. KY. He died in 1908 at Lakeville here in Magoffin County and is buried on Bull Branch, Lakeville, where he lived.

Bob Hoskins was the son of Moses Hoskins b. 1796 Tennessee and died on 23 May 1870 in Magoffin County. His wife was Margaret Clemons (also spelled Clements). Margaret "Peggy" had married first in 1805 Grayson Co. VA to Samuel Helton and had two children, (1) Francis Helton who went to Mt. Sterling, KY and (2) Andrew Jackson Helton b. 1815 who married Delphia Wireman, daughter of John Wireman and Rebecca Carpenter.

Moses Hoskins and Margaret had five children together: (3) Benjamin Hoskins b. 1819, (4) Nancy Hoskins m. John M. Vanderpool (ancestors of Kay Conley Bentley), (5) Sarah Hoskins b. 1823, (6) Rhoda Hoskins m. Gabriel Jackson and (7) Rosana Hoskins m. 1st to William M. Bays and 2nd to Hiram Smith Walters.

Sally Allen, the first wife of Robert "Bob" Hoskins was born in 1826 and died in 1876. She is buried in the old Hoskins Cemetery at the mouth of Bull Branch, Lakeville, KY. She was the daughter of William Allen and Caty Gearheart. In 2010 Joe N. Allen of Van Cleve, KY found the grave of William Allen and the Magoffin County Historical Society aided in setting a marker for him with family information inscribed on it. Bob Whittaker of SC helped greatly with this project and also provided a bench to set near the gravesite.

Now, going back Carl Hoskins’ grandmother, Forest Rose Whitaker, the wife of Allen Hoskins, we find she was born in 1859 according to the Vital Statistics, the daughter of David J. Whitaker and Elizabeth Patrick. Descendants Kymberlee Hitchcock, Sam Whitaker of Bellevue, OH and Sandy Martz of Stuart, FL helped with info on this family for our Whitaker book of genealogy. David J. Whitaker was born in 1830 Floyd Co. KY and died in 1925. His wife Elizabeth was born about 1836, a daughter of Reuben Patrick and Charlotte Wilson.

Parents of David J. Whitaker were Johnson Whitaker and Susannah Arnett.

The Hoskins family also has an Arnett line through John Wesley Hoskins’ wife, Maria Theresa Arnett. She was the daughter of Joseph Gardner Arnett (b. 1864 d. 1947) and Adeline Patton. Maria Theresa’s siblings were (1) Homer Arnett m. June Patrick, (2) Media Arnett m. Lloyd Salyer, (3) Kash Arnett m. Dorothy Watkins, and (4) Harry Dean Arnett m. Orphia Salyer.

Joseph G. Arnett was a merchant and school teacher in the Sublett area of our county. He was the son of John Bud Arnett and Francis Dixon. John Bud was born in 1846 and died in 1921, a son of Wiley "Ole Wile" Arnett and his first wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Sizemore.

Francis "Franky" Dixon was born in 1846 and died in 1925, daughter of Solomon Dixon and Eliza Spurrier.

Wiley Arnett b. 1816 d. 1900 was a son of Stephen Arnett b. 1780 d. 1853, one of the two sons of David Arnett who came to our area, the other being Reuben Arnett who settled in the Middle Fork area.

A few years ago the historical society set a new marker to replace the broken gravestone of Elizabeth "Betsy" Sizemore. This was done to complete a project begun by the late Clarice "Tiny" Minix, sister of Sharroll, daughters of Fred and Audie (Gullett) Minix of the Royalton, KY area.

A marker for Stephen Arnett and his wife Elizabeth Howard was placed in 2004 along with one for the Martha "Patsy" Whitaker, ancestress of the Whitaker family who came to our area with several of her children after her husband Mark Whitaker died in Virginia. We are appreciative of the help of the family of Clifton "Tip" and Ethel (Wireman) Arnett family to complete this project.

We now continue with Joseph G. Arnett’s wife, Adeline Patton’s family. Adeline was born in 1871 and died in 1961, she was the daughter of Thomas H. Patton (b. 1845 Breathitt Co. KY d. 1887 Magoffin Co. KY) and Armina Hounshell. Armina was born in 1846 and died in 1891, the daughter of Andrew Hounshell and Lavina Bryant.

Thomas H. Patton was a son of George W. Patton (1822-1907) and Polly Higgins. Polly was a dau of Thomas Higgins/Hagins and Rebecca Walters.

Much more could be added to this family but hopefully this outline will help those interested in these lines to continue with their research.
