This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the DECEMBER 4, 2014 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

In the November 6 issue of this column we mentioned some genealogy for the family of William "Billy" Reed and his wife Margaret Patrick. Karla Buckmaster has sent us a copy of her death record and it gives the following corrected information: Margaret Reed, Cow Creek, Stella, Magoffin Co. KY, widow of Billy Reed, died 2 March 1930 of pneumonia fever (buried James Reed Cemetery), daughter of Brice Patrick and Peggy Montgomery. Information given by Loy Reed, Stella, KY. Ms. Buckmaster has also sent us a genealogy report she prepared on Enoch England, Civil War soldier. We thank Ms. Buckmaster for her help. We are always pleased that someone reads these comments and makes an effort to help us with needed information.

Remember that the Magoffin County Historical Society is a volunteer organization with people who have worked here in Magoffin County for nearly 40 years to accomplish what we have. We are proud of our genealogy library and our Pioneer Village grounds as well as the amount of history and genealogy we have been able to put into print. We work towards helping our county with tourism and building a positive image of our area. All of you who write, telephone or come in to visit have aided us in our endeavors.

We had a visitor last week from Perrysburg, OH whose aunt had directed him our way. He is Vaughn Vanderpool and he commented that we were able to help him with info that he had been looking to find for years. Several of our historical society printed genealogy collections were connected with his family line.

Vaughn’s paternal grandparents were Charles Vanderpool and Virgie Reed. Charles was a son of Harrison Vanderpool (b. 1895 Magoffin d. 1950) and his wife Eliza Shepherd whom he married in 1913 Magoffin Co. KY. Harrison was a son of Charles B. Vanderpool (b. 1855 Scott Co. VA – d. 1915 Magoffin Co. KY) and Margaret "Peggy" Shepherd (1860-1903). Charles B. was a son of Hezekiah Vanderpool, Jr. (b. 1818 Scott Co. VA d. 1874 Magoffin Co. KY) and Elizabeth Hamilton. Hezikiah Jr. was a son of Hezikiah Vanderpool Sr. b. 1779 and d. 1860 in Virginia. Hezikiah Sr.’s wife was Sophia Sexton b. 1772 d. 1850 Virginia.

Charles B.’s wife Margaret Shepherd Vanderpool was the daughter of Abel Shepherd (1834-1900) and Mary "Polly" Hale (1833-1917). Abel was a son of Jacob Shepherd (178201858) and Elizabeth Hale. Jacob was a son of John Shepherd of Virginia and Elizabeth was a daughter of Benjamin Hale, Jr. and Dicy Franklin.

Abel’s wife Mary "Polly" Hale Shepherd was a daughter of Margaret Hale and Harris Handshoe.

The list of children of Abel and Mary Elizabeth (Hale) Shepherd is as follows: (1) William M. Shepherd b. 1852 d. 1927 m. Elizabeth Hale, dau of James M. Hale and Mary "Polly" Shepherd; (2) Harrison Shepherd b. 1855 d. 1920 m. Margaret Howard, dau of Morgan Howard and Susan Watkins; (3) Elizabeth Shepherd b. 1858 d. 1923 m. Morganthal "Bright Eyes" Wireman, son of John B. Wireman and Florence Sizemore; (4) Margaret Shepherd b. 1860 d. 1903 (Vaughn’s ancestor, see above); (5) John Marion Shepherd b. 1863 d. 1926 m. 1st Eliza Allen, dau of Fair Allen and Mary Ann Prater then m. 2nd Sarah Watkins, dau of James Watkins and Frankie Howard; (6) Susan Shepherd b. 1869 d. 1950 m. Samuel H. Bailey, son of Henry Gardner Bailey and Susannah Marshall; and (7) James Buchanan Shepherd b. 1871 d. 1940 m. Polly Watkins, dau of James Watkins and Frankie Howard.

Vaughn’s grandmother Virgie Reed Vanderpool was a daughter of Gold Reed and Sarah Patton. Gold was a son of Sigler Reed and Susanna Morgan. Virgie Patton Reed was a daughter of John Patton and Cynthia Stephens.

On Vaughn’s maternal side, his mother was a daughter of Clyde Warrix and Sylvia Crager. Clyde was a son of William Kennis Warrix (b. 1866 d. 1946 Floyd Co. KY) and Arizona Howard. Arizona was a daughter of John E. Howard and Susannah Shepherd.

Kennis Warrix was a son of John Fontaine Warrix (1832-1870) and Lucinda Elizabeth Anderson b. 1837 Pike Co. KY, a dau of Reuben Anderson and Lucy Burke. Apparently John F. Warrix was also married in 1884 Floyd Co. KY to Emma Rita Nelson. John F.’s parents were Robert Warick/Warrix b. 1791 d. 1856 and Mary Cannoy b. 1793.

Clyde Warrix’s wife Syliva was a daughter of Kendall Crager and Dovie Shepherd. Kendall was a son of Joseph Crager and Vina Shepherd. Joseph and Vina were married in 1879 Magoffin Co. KY but are found in the Floyd County, KY census records. This is a list of their children: (1) William Crager b. 1881, (2) Sarah Crager, (3) Amanda "Mandy" Crager, (4) Kendall Crager b. 1892, (5) Georgia Crager, (6) Martha Crager, (7) Bee Wheeler Crager and (8) Millard Crager.

Kendall’s wife Dovie Shepherd Crager was a sister to Harrison Vanderpool’s wife, both being daughters of John Marion Shepherd and Eliza Allen.
