This article, written by Todd Preston, the president of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the March 8 2007 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

The Salyersville Independent is a weekly newspaper published and edited every Thursday. For inquires or comments, please write to P. O. Box 29, Salyersville, KY 41465. Yearly subscription rates are $22.00 in Kentucky and $26.00 per year out of state.

The winter freeze has thawed and I hear people talking of getting their garden peas planted.  I’ve also heard of winter time farming talk all through the years and seems like a lot of plans didn’t materialize until the middle of May. (Smile)

Now, I’ve gotta quit roaming around in the woods in pretense of training squirrel dog pups as I’ve got a big bunch of cemeteries I want to visit before summer. Just yesterday my Johnson Fork buddy, Mike Walters, wanted to go up Williams Fork cemetery hunting before he had to check into St. Clair Hospital in Morehead for a hip joint replacement.  What a boy that youngen is!

I had an appointment for a brake job on my Rodeo so I had to try to get it in the garage which was a very busy place. My old buddy Nig Howard was loafing there and his first words were “I bet I know where a cemetery is that you haven’t visited located on Raccoon in front of the William Helton store building.”

Now, this is another cemetery hunting trip to add to the large “bunch” I keep in the “back” of my mind, someone will surely ask “What mind?” (Smile)

We got an email this morning that I want to check out.  Karla Buckmaster (howardbushtree @chartermi.net) wrote in response to my question about where to set the Reuben Arnett tombstone. She recently came across some info from the H. G. Arnett notebooks that tell “My father Ambrose Arnett bought a farm from Michael Risner about 1850 on the Mill Branch of Middle Fork.  1854: Ambrose was buried on a hill now a part of the Dona C. Arnett farm which overlooks his family’s original home. His tombstone is legible and rests against a cedar tree, a less legible stone nearby may be that of his father Reuben who died 22 Aug 1856 at the age of 72.”  Thank  you, Karla for bringing this to our attention!

Doug Conley wrote that he is searching for info on Izer Conley who was born in Floyd Co. KY probably on 27 Jan 1873 according to his WWI registration card. He was married to a Gypsy Shepherd or Caudill.

They appear in the 1910 Floyd Co. KY census, in the 1920 Scioto Co. Ohio census and in the 1930 Pike Co. OH census.

The 1910 Floyd County census lists Zur Conley age 28 (b. 1882) married 11 years to Zipsey age 24 (b. 1886). They had children Bessie b. 1900, Rosa b. 1903, Robert b. 1905 and Add b. 1908. Other children born later were Sallie, Willis, Lonie, Celia, Lydia, Sterling and Mary.

Izer and Gypsy are buried in the Adams Cemetery in West Portsmouth, OH.  Doug would appreciate any info on Izer or Gypsy.

I’ve spent many hours on this query without much success. It is probable that “Izer” or “Zur” is “Isaiah” Conley, the son of David and Nancy Ann Conley and that Gypsy was the daughter of Martin Shepherd and Peggy Caudill.  It’s interesting to note Doug’s projection of a probable birth year of 1873 and the census record shows ca. 1882, the average birthdate of WWI veterans was about 1890.

Nicole Heller of Bowling Green, KY (Nheller @fruit.com) writes she is researching her Mann family. Her mother is Flora Faye Mann from Greenup Co. KY, a descendant of William Mann b. 18 Jan 1809 d. 1882. He married Rhoda Howard b. 1813 d. 22 Mar 1894.  Nicole’s question is: was William Manns the son of Samuel Mann b. 1775 VA and d. 1850 Floyd Co. KY who married Margaret Hamilton?

The Floyd County Annals give info that during the Jan term of court 1811, on motion of Samuel Manns that Ezekiel Stone, Joseph Bailey and Clifford Slone mark a road from Salt Lick to Middle Creek to Mason Williams home.  On 25 Feb 1815 Samuel Manns married Presha Dykes.  On 21 Sep 1818 Samuel Manns helped mark a road on Middle Fork of Licking River to main fork of same. This seems to indicate that in 1818 Samuel Manns lived in the area that would become Magoffin County in 1860.  We may be looking at more than one Samuel Manns.

The 1810 Floyd Co. KY census lists Samuel Mann age 26 to 45, wife age 16 to 26 and they have a male under 10 and a female under 10 in their household so this tells us Samuel was probably married by 1806.  We might then surmise that William “Billy” Mann b. ca. 1808 in Floyd County and d. 22 Nov 1882 was that male child under 10 in the 1810 Floyd Co. KY census.  William married in 1832 to Rhoda Howard b. 1813.

We are rather sure that William and Rhoda are buried on the Hawes Fork of Quicksand, Breathitt Co. KY in unmarked graves in the Benton Manns Cemetery. Hopefully we will get to set some Confederate markers in that area in the last week of March.

In our Civil War book is this record: Cudberth Stone b. 1825, served in Co. F, 14th KY Inf. USA and married Clarinda Arnett b. 1826, dau of Reuben Arnett and Sally Mann. Sally was a dau of Samuel Mann and Presha Dykes (who were married in 1815) so Samuel must have been married before William was born or perhaps we are looking at another Samuel Mann.

Joe Skeens of West Prestonsburg, KY telephoned asking for the burial site of Joseph Conley b. 1832 d. 1912, said to be buried at Waldo and asked if he had a government marker.

Joseph Conley was a son of David Conley and Margaret Phillips and married first Jemima Mullins and m. 2nd Mary “Polly” Bailey b. 1840, dau of John Bailey, Jr. and Catherine Runyon.

This Joseph enlisted 15 May 1863 in Co. F, 13th KY Cav and was captured 7 Jul 1863 at Gladeville, VA. He was sent to Camp Douglas, IL and then exchanged 2 Mar 1865.

Joseph’s death certificate lists the Gardner-Bailey Cemetery at Waldo as the burial place with a death date of June 27, 1912.  We believe the correct location is the Henry Gardner Bailey Cemetery which is located at Gunlock, KY near the head of Licking. Perhaps we will hear from someone who has more information on this.
