The Gahagan (Goaghan, Geoghegan, Goghan, Gaughan etc) Families in Killala Roman Catholic Parish County Mayo, Ireland Records

The Killala, County Mayo, Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Records are covered on LDS Microfilm Number 1279204 item numbers 17-19. According to the LDS website, the film covers the following records: Baptisms 1852-1880 and Marriages 1873-1880. There is another film that covers Killala: Microfilm 897365 (1757-1772) but it is a Church of Ireland film. I have completed the marriage section covered in item 19 which was extremely brief and only had a few Gaughan records.

Killala Roman Catholic Parish covers both Killala and Templemurry Civil Parishes; is located in Tirawley Barony in County Mayo, Ireland and was part of Killala Poor Law Union. When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in Killala Civil Parish around 1856, Gaughans occupied parcels in the following Townlands: Killogunra, Rathowen West and Townplots West. Gaughan was the only variant of this surname that I found in the Griffith's Valuation for Killala. I have only completed one item of this film on marriages and have seen numerous Gaughan witnesses but few marriage records.

I have created a page listing the various Townlands in Killala Civil Parish, a page on the Market Town of Killala (as it was the site of significant economic activity), a page describing the characteristics of Killala Civil Parish and one noting the Gaughans documented in the Griffith's Valuation all of which may be of benefit to those whose Gaughans hailed from this area. Please contact me if you feel that you are a descendent of a Gaughan from the Killala area so that we can share information and try to connect the families I document- it will help us all!

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item number on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible Townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.
