Brennans in Carracastle Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland

I have completed microfilm number 1279233 items 1 and 2 that covers Carracastle Catholic Parish that is the eastern most portion of Kilbeagh Civil Parish. These records cover the time frame from 1847-1908. Item two is listed as Diocese of Achonry Carracastle Parish Baptisms. There is another microfilm listed for this parish, film # 926004 that I have yet to check out. There were fairly few Brennan marriages in Item 1, but 16 different Brennans witnessed the marriages of others in this section. I have not included them in this record because no Townlands were given. Keep in mind that the other Roman Catholic Parish in Kilbeagh Civil Parish (Charlestown) immediately to the southwest has a really large quantity of Brennans. It took me days to get through just one item in that film. That will be the next Catholic Parish that I will tackle.

The Brennan Families I have identified in this Civil Parish are presented under the spouse's surname. If I have been unable to identify the name of the spouse that married a Brennan for one reason or another I will place those records in the "unknown" section of this directory.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but the quality was poor in item one and after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item numbers on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible townlands that might provide a missing link. If you feel that your family is identified in these pages and would like further details, please feel free to contact me.

If both the husband and wife's surname is Brennan I will include it in the "B" section of these records. Her maiden name may be Brennan or it may be something else and just not used. There is no way to tell one way or the other. The following Brennans witnessed marriages or sponsored baptisms in which a Townland name was given or they were documented in some unusual way.

  1. Catherine Brennan sponsored the baptism of a Michael Horan on December 19, 1858 in the Townland of Lor? The only Townland that I could find looking similar was Lurga Lower or Lurga Upper in Kilbeagh Civil Parish.
