The Heidebauern Connection -  Györköny

The first settlers from the Heideboden arrived here around 1717 and 1718, although some sources suggest the date of 1710.   The first group who arrived consisted of twelve Magyar Lutheran families from Raab County and four German families from Moson and Sopron Counties.   By 1722 the majority of the settlers were Magyars and they numbered 193 Lutherans, 3 Calvinists and 35 Roman Catholics.   The Lutherans had their own pastor, none other than George Barany "the father" of the Lutheran Church in Swabian Turkey.   But new settlers continued to arrive from Moson County and other parts of Western Hungary that were joined by a stream of colonists from Germany, most of whom came from Hessen.   The German speaking population expanded, and Barany took the Hungarians to resettle in Szarszentlorincz in close proximity to the older settlement.   The two groups of Germans maintained separate identities in the community well on into the next century and seldom inter-married until then, and both groups preserved their own customs from home as well as their "tracht".costume.   Surveying the church records for the Lutheran congregation I was able to identify the following Heidebauern family names that are to be found there, but there are also entries for the Lutheran Heidebauern who settled in Bikacs but were not allowed to have a pastor.
