* John (Jean de la Chaumotte) Sumate
     According to one researcher, Jean fled France with many other Huguenots
     the late 1600s and came to England. Jean served in the English Army and
     adopted the English spelling of his name, John de la Sumate. Johns wife
     died in the French Marinique, he then departed for the Virginia coloney
     and in 1723 purchased two hundred acres of land at Elk Run, Stafford Co
     VA. Tobacco list of Overwharton Parrish in 1724 has John de la Shumate,
     and his three sons listed

        1781; there is some question if this is Daniel Shumate Jr or Sr
