Mrs. Hastings received a 45-year pin for her work in the Primary organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. HASTINGS, James R., Dr.

Tucson -- Services for University of Arizona meteorologist James R. Hastings, 50, who died in his home in Tucson, were held Monday, July 1, 1974. Burial was in East Lawn Memorial Park. Dr. Hastings, who died of complications from recent open heart surgery, was a native Arizonan born in Hayden and was its first mayor when it incorporated in 1956. He had been a permanent UofA faculty member since 1962 but previously taught history and was a graduate assistant in government at the university. He received his bachelor's degree from the UofA in 1951 and his doctorate in 1963, also from the UofA. He was a World War II veteran and served overseas in India from 1942 to 1945. Survivors include his brother, Weldon W. and a sister out of state. Thursday, July 4, 1974.

Ezra Ralph Hatch, 78, a native of Taylor, died Thursday, June 27, 1974, in his home in Phoenix. He was a former owner operator of a motel in Holbrook and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission for the church in the Southern States. Jacob T. Hellmund, 89, who had been a contractor many years with Del Webb and Pete Homes, died Tuesday, June 11, 1974, in Upward View Nursing Home. Mr. Hellmund, of 1941 W. Mitchell, was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist and Carpenters Union Local 1089. He had lived in Phoenix since 1926. Services were in A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams. Leslie F. Hoag, 71, was born in Rutland, Vermont, and died Monday, July 8, 1974, in Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, in 1925 and served several years until resigning to enter the field of mining engineering. He sold equipment in Lebanon, PA, Salt Lake City, and Johannesburg, South Africa. He came to Phoenix in 1944 from Sale Lake City. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and the Phoenix Country Club. Wife, Harriet; children, Lt. Cmdr. Robert W. Hoag, Harriet H. Haskell and Frances Hoag; and seven grandchildren. Williams -- George E. Carter, 46, his wife, Elizabeth Ann Carter, 45, her parents, George Hoffman, 70, his wife, Hortense Hoffman, 68, were killed Friday, June 21, 1974, in an airplane crash in Denver as they flew to Boulder, Colorado, for a wedding. Mr. Carter, of Williams, was the Williams-Ashfork-Texaco distributor for the past six years. He was a member of the Ashfork Unified School District Board of Trustees. He came to Arizona 40 years ago. Survivors include a brother, Fred, and two other brothers and four sisters out of state.
His wife, Elizabeth, was a member of the Parent Teacher Association. Survivors of Mr. and Mrs. Carter include sons, George, Jr., Paul, Donald and James; daughters, Mrs. Annette Cribbs and Carol Carter.
Mr. Hoffman, of Kingman, was a retired maintenance man. He had attended Emporia, Kansas, State Teachers College.
His wife, Hortense, was employed as a clerk. Survivors of Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman include sons, James, John, Michael and Charles; a daughter, Mrs. Larissa Baxter, and 19 grandchildren. She came to Arizona in 1902 from her native Canada and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Phoenix. Son, Harry; sisters, Mrs. Emma M. Lee Holt, 76, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1974, of a heart attack in his home, 4819 W. Flower. He began his newspaper career with The Arizona Republic as a carrier boy in 1911 and was pressroom foreman from 1943 to 1958. He became a journeyman pressman in 1915 and was honored at retirement ceremonies in 1966 after 40 years and 10 months with Phoenix Newspapers, Inc. Mr. Holt was a member of the Arizona Historical Society, Arizona Pioneers Association, and the Elks Lodge in Ajo. He was born in Grafton, W.VA, and was brought to Arizona in 1909 by his family. Randy William Howard, 17, died Wed., June 5, 1974, after he was injured in a motorcycle accident. He was born in Phoenix and attended Madison Elementary School and was a junior at Camelback High School. He was a membeer of the Orangewood Presbyterian Church Youth Group. Cathern Pat Howard, 50, who had helped start Little League baseball in Phoenix and coached a team six years died Monday, July 15, 1974, in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs. Howard of 6739 N. 24th Drive, had served in the Womens Army Auxiliary Corps in World War II and had worked with the Cub Scouts and Brownies. She was born in Tucson. Services were in A. L. Gordon Huber, 47, died Tuesday, June 4, 1974, in Phoenix Indian Medical Center. He had been an accountant 18 years and with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in Phoenix two years before retiring in 1969.
