Lincoln County West Virginia Biography of Jonathan MOORE


           Jonathan Moore, son of John and Mary (Barnhouse) Moore, is a native of Randolph county, (now) West Virginia, born March, 18, 1838; in Calhoun county, December 20, 1857, he was joined in marriage with Mary Brannan. She was born in Kanawha county, (now) West Virginia, March 31, 1838, and her parents are William A. and Catharine (King) Brannan. The latter died July 3, 1853, and the former is a resident of Boone county, West Virginia. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Moore are 10 in number, born as follows: Jacob W., August 5, 1858; Catharine B., February 19, 1860; Matilda C., December 13, 1861; Samuel J., July 10, 1868; William B., November 4, 1870; Esther, November 3, 1872, died November 13, 1875; Alice, January 26, 1875, died November 7, 1875; Jehu, January 10, 1877; Amy, February 11, 1880; and Josiah P., October 16, 1883. The children living are all at home but Jacob W., who is a resident of Calhoun county. Mr. and Mrs. Moore joined the Christian Church, February 5, 1881, in which Mr., Moore is a ruling elder and Sabbath school superintendent. Three of their children, Catharine B., Matilda C., and Samuel J. are members of the same church. Mr. Moore's father died in 1849 and his mother is residing in Roane county. Jonathan Moore enlisted in the late war, in 1862, serving in Company A, 19th Virginia Volunteer Cavalry, Confederate army. He was engaged in the battles at Bulltown and White Springs; was taken prisoner November 1863, and held until the close of the war. The subject of this sketch is a farmer in Carroll district, Lincoln County, and owns 100 acres of land in Curry district, Putnam county, 5 miles east from Hamlin. The land is well watered, heavily timbered with poplar, ash, sugar, maple and locust, a fine young orchard, coal and iron ore in abundance. Mr. Moore may be addressed at Hamlin, Lincoln county, West Virginia.
