The James Madison Museum is the
nation's first museum dedicated to the memory of James Madison. It also features
exhibits detailing the history of Orange County. The museum's Hall of Agriculture
houses the 1733 Arjalon Price House (one of the oldest patent or "cube" houses
in the county).
Montpelier was the life-long home of James
Madison. The main house was later enlarged by the William duPont, Sr. family. After
Mr. duPont's death, his daughter Marion duPont Scott, an internationally respected
horsewoman, took over the property.
The Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum,
located in nearby Gordonsville. This wonderful museum is housed in the Gordonsville
Exchange Hotel, which shortly after it opened was converted into a military hospital. The
Hotel was used as a hospital during almost the entire Civil War. The Museum now houses a
collection of Civil War artifacts and hosts periodic reenactments of Civil War
