Sanderson is the county seat of Terrell County. Terrell County has two unincorporated towns: Sanderson and Dryden. Terrell County is bordered by the Rio Grande River.

Terrell County, formerly part of Pecos County, was formed by an act of the Texas legislature on April 8, 1905, and organized on July 27 of that year. It was named in honor of Alexander Watkins Terrell, a jurist, Civil War officer, and statesman.
