Tennessee's registration of births and deaths began in 1914, with general compliance achieved by the early 1920s. Some earlier attempts were made at recording these events, though they are fragmented. Death records have long been used for genealogy research purposes as this record may contain a wealth of information. Other places to locate information about deaths are the newspaper, an individuals personal papers, funeral home, and cemetery.
