The year of 1998 was classified as "El Nino" because of ocean currents and weather patterns over the oceans. This weather anomaly affected Saskatchewan with a mild winter. This snowfall on the eve of Oct 10-11, 1998, the Thanksgiving long weekend that year, brought snow before all the trees were finished shedding their leaves. There had been such a mild autumn with not been enough frosts for the trees to be finish the autumn transition from summer to winter.
This heavy wet snowfall soon melted after many snowmen and snow forts appeared. Saskatoon enjoyed some more mild weather called "Indian summer" before winter snow came and stayed.
