WRIGHT CEMETERY        A.K.A. Woodland Plot, Cox and Upper Byrds Creek.

Catalogued October 18, 1974 by H. A. Dieter and Dewey Hillberry. Located 1.5 miles north of State Hwy. 60 at Byrds Creek, section 24, Town of Richwood. This old cemetery, long since obsolete, was begun in about 1871 on land then owned by Rev. I. J. Wright. A United Brethren Church once stood nearby on a slope facing north toward a town road running eastward from the Upper Byrds Creek School, District 7. The school stands north of the road at a westward fork of the valley road leading up from Hwy. 60.  Dense undergrowth shuts off the view from the road which passes by within ninety feet to the north and leading eastward up the valley beyond to Methodist Ridge. Most of the headstones are lying flat on the ground but not too badly eroded. The first known burial was in January of 1871. There is certain evidence, not all recorded, of other burials; the last in 1886. Rev. Wright died in 1888 and is buried at Basswood. No record was found within the County of Mary C. Wright, first wife of Wm. T., second wife of Wm. H. Wright. She was a daughter of Zachory and Nancy Barnes of the Blue River area. It was later referred to as Cox or Upper Byrds Creek.
