He appears on a List of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, who have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., commanding said Army, to Lieut. Genl. U.S. Grant, commanding Armies of the United States. Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. List dated Wallace's Brigade, April 10, 1865.
 CONFEDERATE SOUTH CAROLINA TROOPS
The 18th SC. Infantry Regiment was assembled during the winter of 1861-1862 with men from Laurens County and other counties in the northwestern part of the state. After serving in the Department of South Carolina, Georiga, and Florida, it was ordered to Virginia. During the war it was assigned to General Evans', Elliott's, and Wallace's Brigade.
The 18th fought at Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg, moved to North Carolina, then saw action at Jackson, Mississippi. Returning to South Carolina, it was involved in the operations around Charleston. During the spring of 1864 the unit was sent back to Virginia where it participated in the Petersburg siege north and south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign.
This regiment lost forty-nine percent of the 230 engaged at Second Manassas and had 3 killed and 39 wounded during the Maryland Campaign. In September, 1863, there were 363 present for duty and at the Petersburg mine explosion, 205 were disabled. It sustained many casualties at Sayler's Creek and surrendered 16 officers and 1 39 men. The field officers were Colonels James M. Gadberry and William H. Wallace, Lieutenant Colonels W.B. Allison and Ferinand Scaife, and Major Rolet J. Betsill.
 Camp Near Petersburg, VA,

To Sylvira Byars and all the children.
     Dear wife and children:
I am permitted the privilege once more to take my pen in hand to dropyou a few lines to let you know that I am well at this time, hoping these few lines may come safe to hand and find you all well and doing well.
I received your kind and welcome letter dated September the 25th, and it was the first time that I had heard from you since the 11th of September, and I was glad to hear from you all, but was sorry to hear that you were sick.
Sis, it has been two weeks today since I wrote to you,for they have been fighting all around Richmond and between the Weldonand Danville railroad and we have been kept so closely confined thatI have not had any chance to write to you, but up to last night ourmen were driving them back between the Weldon and Danville railroad, but wehear them fighting again this morning; but what will be the result today, I am not able to tell you, but I am in hopes our men will still bevictorious.
Our division has not been in the fight yet, but we are ready at any moment to go in to it if we are called on, butI am in hopes that they will whip them without our assistance, for fightingwith grape-shot and canister is no fun, I can tell you.
I wrote to you that I was going to try to get a furlough the first of this month, but General Beamguard issued an order stopping furloughs for recruits for a while, but as soon as they are opened I am going to try to get one, if I am alive, for we are still in ditches and I am afraid that we will have to stay here for the winter, and if we do I don?t see no chance but for us to suffer with cold and hunger, for we have no wood nearer that eight miles, and a very bad way to get it here.
Bedford got wounded the 21st day of September in both thighs from the explosion of a mortar shell and the doctor had to put him under the influence of chloroform to examine his wounds and they could not raise his pulse any more and he died the twenty-fourth.
I got clean clothes and Tom Byram and Matt Humphries went with me and we got a coffin and buried him as decent as we could here.
Tell Dulseeney that I received her letter and was glad to hear from her and to hear that she was well, for I had almost come to the conclusion that she had entirely forgot me. Tell her that I have not ] answered her letter yet but will as soon as I get a chance.
I want you to send me the largest potato and the largest lump of butter and the largest pumpkin custard and the largest onion you havegot the first chance, for I am very hungry, and have got nothing to eat this morning for breakfast but bread and you know that don't go down well.
So, I will close by saying that I remain as ever, your loving husband until death.
