The Descendants of Frederick Huffmaster

Generation No. 1

1. Frederick Huffmaster was born in Germany. He married Christina ____________. She was born in Germany.

Notes for Frederick Huffmaster:

The following data depicts various sources of information and discrepancies. The Huffmaster family, like many other Sullivan County families, twines through the Thrasher and Hunsinger families. Most of the information for this family comes from Carol Brotzman, Laura Winn Kane, Evelyn Potter Keeney, Ernest Hatton, the new Bradford County History, census records, Streby's History of Cherry Township and the World Family Treemaker program submitted by Carol Beverlin. Some of the original material has been supplemented or corrected in light of obituary records in the Sullivan Review of Dushore, Sullivan County, PA. If there are further errors, our contributors are pleased to correct them upon submission of verifiable information to justify a change. This is by no means a complete history of this wondrous family. For example, there may be more children of whom we are unaware. However, this is a good beginning to researching the Huffmaster line.

Editor's Note: It will also be helpful for those interested in the Lonser family to whom the Huffmasters are related by marriage to access Descendants of August Lonser.

ii. Henry Huffmaster, born June 04, 1922; died May 12, 1944 at Anzio Beach, Italy in World War Two. Henry's picture is also attached here. His obituary was printed in the July 13, 1944 issue of the Sullivan Review, Dushore, PA, and reads as follows:

Memorial Service at St. John's Wilmot

A very impressive memorial service was held Sunday evening at 8 o'clock in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, Wilmot, for Pfc. Henry Huffmaster. The pastor, Rev. John D. Keener, of Dushore, officiated and preached the sermon.

Mr. and Mrs. William Kuhnle of Wilmot, with whom Pfc. Huffmaster made his home before entering the service, received word from the War Department that Pfc. Huffmaster, who was reported missing in action in Italy, May 16th, has now been reported killed on May 13th.

Henry entered the service on October 15, 1942. He was stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi where he received basic training. From there he was moved to Shreveport, La., and desert maneuvers in California. In December 1943, he was sent to North Africa and from there to Italy where he served until his death.

He is survived by one brother Cpl. Joseph Huffmaster, now stationed at Camp Davis, North Carolina, six sisters and other relatives.

Rev. Keener used as his text, Romans 8"38. 39. "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life", nor anything else, "shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Jesus Christ our Lord."

He said, "News of the death of a faithful Christian, 'killed in action' raies many questions in the mind and heart of a sincere Christian. These questions must be answered to satisfy our faith in God."

One of these questions is; Why does God permit the death of a young Christian man in a war they did not make? Most of the guilt for this war can be laid at the feet of the dictators who are seeking to enslave the world, but certainly not at the feet of those who suffer and die through it. Why does God permit them to suffer and die innocently?

We are living in a world of sin, sickness, suffering, death and injustice. God has not promised that Christians shall escape these things just because they are Christians. We are all part of this world and must share in its shortcomings, just as Jesus did, though he was the Son of God.

Another question which is in the minds of many, concerns our faith in the power of prayer. this young man who gave his life certainly prayed God to spare him. His loved ones at home prayed God to spare him. If these prayers were unanswered why should we continue to trust in prayer?

Chaplains at the front are beginning to be skeptical about the sincerity of those who are forced to turn to God only after the fear of death in battle becomes real to them. If they pray only that God will spare them and are then wounded and laying dying on the battlefield they will feel that God has let them down. They will die without faith in God. Loved ones at home who pray only that God might spare their boys and send them home safely, will lose their faith in God if a telegram comes saying "killed in action."

We must get a new understanding of prayer. When we pray for material things like food, health and life, we must pary in the spriit of Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane, "Not my will but thine be done." (If) God over rules our prayers by permitting the death of our loved ones, it will be because He knows best. We must accept such an eventuality as God's will and remember that "All things work together for good to them that love God."

But our prayers must not stop with petitions for the safety of our boys. We must also pray that whatever befalls them they may not fall away from faith in God and fellowship with Him. We must pray that they and we will enjoy a rich fellowship with God that even death cannot destroy. This is the kind of faith and fellowship our loved one who has given his life had. We are confident therefore that neither life nor death shall be able to separate him from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
