     Merrill Edward Pratt was born in 1828 in New Hampshire.

Merrill began military service on 1 March 1862 in Prattville, Alabama, He was elected 1st Lieutenant March 8, captured at Port Hudson July 9, 1863, sent to New Orleans on Steamer "Suffolk" July 14, confined at Custom House, sent to Rampart St., New York September 20, 1863 on Steamer Clinton, sent to Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, September 29, 1863, sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. for exchange, September 16, 1864, transferred to Military Prison, Camp Hamilton, Va. September 20, 1864, exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Va., admitted General Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Va., Chronic Diarrhoea September 21, furloughed September 25, granted leave November 28, 1864, his file contains a hard to read handwritten letter from his physician attesting to his weakened condition resulting from prison confinement, dated October 24, 1864 at Prattville.

Merrill married Julia Adelaide SMITH, daughter of Dr. Samuel Parrish SMITH and Adelaide Julia Allen, on 2 November 1862 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama.

Merrill Edward Pratt died on 23 November 1889 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.
