     Margaret W. Brown was born on 24 August 1828 in York County, South Carolina.1

Margaret married John BURT Jr., son of John BURT and Hannah (?), on 23 January 1846 in Monroe County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Robert Brown and Dorcas Strait, a wealthy family who had moved from South Carolina to Alabama and finally to Mississippi. Upon their marriage they presented John and Margaret a gift of money to buy land and build a house.1,2

Margaret W. Brown and John BURT Jr. appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 19 August 1850 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. The household was listed as John Burt, a 31-year-old teacher born in Georgia, and Margaret W. Burt, age 22, born South Carolina. Also in the household were William C. Burt, 3, and Mary A. D. Burt, 1, both born in Mississippi.

Margaret W. Brown and John BURT Jr. appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 25 June 1860 in Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi. The household was listed as John Birt, a 42 year old farmer, born Georgia, and Margaret Birt, his wife, age 32, born South Carolina. He had real estate valued $360 and personal estate $3000. Also in the household were their children: W. C., 14, in school; Mary, 12, in school; Zack, 7; Jas. B., 4 and John. 2, all born Mississippi. Their son Robert Birt, age 10, was living next in the household of James and Mary Sisk. Also in the Sisk household was 60 year old Darkess [Dorcus] Brown, female, born South Carolina, Margaret's mother.3

The household was listed as John Burt, 56, farmer, $800 real estate, $1000 personal property; Margaret Burt, 41, wife; William Burt, 23, farm laborer; Robert, 19, farm laborer; Zacheus, 16, farm laborer; Buck, 14, farm laborer; John, 11, farm laborer; George, 9, at home; Mary, 20, at home; Fannie, 6, at home; and Sarah, 2, at home.

Margaret W. Brown and John BURT Jr. appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 8 June 1880 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. The household was listed as John Burt, 60, farmer; his wife, Margaret, 50, keeping house; Zachariah, 26, son; John, 21, son; George, 18, son; Fannie, 16, daughter; Sallie, 13, daughter; and Maggie, 8, daughter.

Margaret W. Brown died on 16 April 1897 in New Chapel, Itawamba County, Mississippi, at age 68.1 She was buried in New Chapel Cemetery.
