WALLACE, Hugh (d.). This pioneer, with his brothers Donald and Alexander, came with their father, John Wallace. They were of the sturdy band who took passage on the sailing vessel Planet from the port of Cromarty, Scot., for South America in 1825, and 18 months later arrived at Guelph in time to take part in the festivities that commemorated its settlement. John Wallace, the old pioneer, only lived a few years after coming to Canada, and was the second body interred in the old cemetery, Guelph. They took up land on the Elora road, which at this time had time had been "blazed", but not cut out. The following year (1828) the Wallaces set. in Pilkington, and were among the very first settlers in the township, which was then an unbroken forest. Here they cut out a home for themselves in the bush, and became prosperous and influential citizens. The late Hugh Wallace was b. in Ross-shire, Scot., in 1819, and was only eight years old when the family arrived in Guelph. He was practically raised in Pilkington, where he m. Margaret Metcalf. He was a man of strong religious convictions, being a class leader. Although he never sought municipal office, he held decided political opinions. He d. in 1881. Issue: Mrs. John Campbell, Salt Lake City; Barbara, m. Rev. J. Stewart; Elizabeth (d.); George A., Henry W., N. Dakota; Benson J., N. Dakota; Harriet E. (d.); Alfred, Hugh, Jr., and Mrs. H. B., all born on the Pilkington farm.

George A., owns and lives on the homestead, parts of lots 10 and 11, con. 1, Pilkington, containing 250 acres, and is substantial citizens of the township. He takes an active interest in politics, and has held the office of County Commissioner for three years, 1902-3-4. and is now Reeve of the township. He carries on mixed framing, making a specialty of Lincolnshire sheep and Clydesdale horses, of which he has the best, having taken many first prizes at the numerous fairs, as well as the Toronto Exhibition. He m. Annie Somers. Issue: Harley M., Edward B., Donald S., Ida M., and Stewart, all at home.
