TYSON, A. W
., b. Dec 16 1856, in the village of Winterbourne, Waterloo Co. He is a son of
the late John Tyson and Isabella Wright Tyson. John Tyson was b. near
Norristown, Penn., Nov 1 1821, d. in Guelph, Feb 11, 1883, where he was buried.
The late John Tyson came to Canada Oct 17, 1843, and was a cattle dealer, and
engaged in butchering up to the time of his death. He was prominent in stock
associations; and was for several years an Alderman. Mrs. Tyson was b. in
Aberdeen, Scot., in 1831, and came to Canada with her parents in 1837, in a
sailing vessel which was nine weeks on the ocean. They set. on a farm in
Waterloo Co. Mrs. Tyson is still living and resides with her son in Guelph. Mr.
A. W. Tyson was educated in Guelph and graduated from the old Grammar School.
He associated himself with his father in the butchering and cattle droving
business, and took entire charge of everything at his father's death. In the
early eighties Mr. Tyson was one of the players in the Maple Leaf Baseball
team, at the time they won the championship, and in the nineties he was
associated with the team as one of the Directors when they one the championship
series. Mr. Tyson has been very prominent in Live Stock Associations and in
connection therewith has been President of the Guelph Poultry Association;
President of the Ontario Association two years; a member of the Executive Board
of the Guelph Central Exhibition, and of the Guelph Fat Stock Club; The Guelph
Horse Show Association, and a Director of the Provincial Winter Fair Board. In
1903-4 he acted as judge in connection with the fat cattle of the Provincial
Winter Fair and for two years was judge of the dressed carcasses of beef and
mutton. Mr. Tyson has been a very active worker in the interests of the county
and city. In 1905 he was candidate for M.PP. and while he met with defeat, it
was really a victory for him, from the fact that he ran against two candidates
and under the conditions at that time made one of the most magnificent runs in
the history of the province.
There are few men more widely and favorably known than Mr. Arthur Wright Tyson.
