TURNER, Walter
, b. King Tp., York Co., 1843. He came to Luther and bought the right to a bush
farm and cleared it himself without assistance from any other source. Mr.
Turner was a carpenter by trade and built the first frame house in the
township, which was a store in Damascus and was used by the people of the
township as a place of worship. Up to the present time he has been interested
in 900 acres of land, and now owns 600 acres, lot 10, con. 8, West Luther, and
has settled all the boys on good farms. Their property is worth in the
aggregate $30,000, which is a great result from such a small beginning. Mr.
Turner never was sued in his life. He has the respect of the entire community
and the character of his large family of ten children who are all set. near him
is a credit both to himself and wife. Mr. Turner is a Methodist and a
Conservative. He has been in the Township Council and a tax collector for
years. In 1867 he m. Mary A. Water. Issue: Mrs. Peter McDougal, Garafraxa; Mrs.
Wm. McConnell, Mrs. Edmund Layton, Damascus; Mrs. John Coutts, John H., Charles
and Walter, Luther; Emma at home; Mrs. Robert Wilkie, St. Catherines, and
William J., on the homestead.
