THOMPSON, John,
b. Galway, Ire., 1844. He came to Arthur Tp. at twenty years of age,
and worked for some time, when he took up 50 acres, 8 of which were cleared
with a shanty upon it. He lived in Mount Forest for nine years, working as a
laborer, and on his land at spare times. He then bought 79 acres of bush land,
adjoining his farm, which he cleared and erected buildings upon. He never had
any financial help, but made all of his property by his own exertions. The
members of his family worked with him, and they succeeded in accumulating a
fine property of 300 acres, lot 13, con. 8equipped with modern buildings and
valued at $10,000, which is an example of what can be accomplished in Canada by
industry and honesty. Mr. Thompson raised his family and gave them a liberal
education. He never was sued for debt in his life, and is now practically
retired from active life with the respect and confidence of his neighbours. He
is a member of the English church and a Conservative. In 1866 he m.

home; Mrs. R. E. Morrison, Arthur; George H., at home; Mrs. E. Welton, Ottawa;
and Caroline, at home.
