SPENCE, John (d.), b. Scot., 1823, d. 1872. Upon coming to Canada he set. for six years in Elora, then six years in Nichol Tp. and five years in Eramosa, after which, in 1870, he came to West Garafraxa and purchased lot 3, con. 4. He d. two years after taking possession and is buried in Belsyde Cemetery. He was industrious, scrupulous, honest and a good neighbor. He m. Maria Leith in Scotland. She still survives and lives in Fergus. Issue: Alexander, Dr. James Spence, physician, at Parkdale, Toronto.; George, set. Tara; John, and Mrs. Egan (d.).

Alexander purchased his farm, lot 21, con. 4, West Garafraxa, on which is a fine residence, from D. McGregor, and in 1875 added to it 100 acres on the north. He had the misfortune of losing a fine barn by fire in 1904, and at this writing is building another.

Mr. Spence is a Presbyterian and a Liberal and has been Justice of the Peace for years. He m. Jane A. Bichan, whose father was an old settler in West Garafraxa, and at one time owned part of John Brimmer's present property. Issue: Mary, school teacher in Grey Co.; John, at home; Jennie M. school teacher, Living Springs, and Pearl and Harvey, at home.
