SAUNDERS, Duncan
(d.), was b. Blairgowrie, Scot., in 1824, and d. in 1872, age 48. He was a
plasterer by trade and worked at his trade four years in Montreal, going to
Hamilton in 1847. He remained until 1854, when he was induced to look up land
then known as the "Queen's Bush." He purchased his present farm of 200 acres,
lot 3, con. 1, Luther, and in that year he began pioneer life. At that time
there was only one neighbor. Mr. Saunders took a very active interest in
municipal matters, and in 1870 was the second Reeve elected in the
municipality. He was also in the Council in 1881, when the townships were
separated. He took a very active interest in public questions, and was one of
the leading Conservatives of the township. Unfortunately Mr. Saunders did not
live to see the great development of this township. He was a man of great
personal activity and energy, and had no money to start with but by his own
efforts raised and educated his large family and left a nice property. He was
an Elder and Trustee of Arthur Presbyterian Church. In 1846 in Montreal he m.
Jane Manson, who is living age 81, and at the time of this writing is able to
give dates and particulars accurately. Issue: Mrs. Martin, Garafraxa; William,
Mrs. F. Andrews, Luther; Duncan, John, and three died in infancy.
William was b. on the homestead in 1855. He resides upon and owns lot 5, con. 11, West Luther. He is a successful farmer, and makes a specialty of raising "stockers." He has held the office of School Trustee and Justice of the Peace; and is a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. In 1889 he m. Mary Martin. Issue: Janet, Margaret, Jessie (d.), Duncan, Norman, Esther, William, Hugh and Mary. Duncan, b. 1862, resides upon and owns the west half of lot 3, con. 11, West Luther, where he carries on mixed farming, making a specialty of thoroughbred sheep, and is a very successful man. He is a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. In 1887 he m. Caroline Shaw. Issue: Duncan D., Jane M., Arthur, John H.,, Annie M., and Gordon. John occupies and owns the east half of lot 3, con. 1, West Luther. He is a successful man, carrying on mixed farming, and feeds cattle for export. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. IN 1889 he m. Florence, eldest dau. of John Collingridge, of Garafraxa. Issue: Beatrice, Pearl, and John. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
