PRAIN, John , b. Perthshire, Scot., May 29 1830. When fourteen years of age he started out on his own account and worked for farmers in Forfarshire. When about twenty years of age, he became collector of tolls on one of the principal toll roads in the district. In 1851 he m. Betsey Keith of Forfarshire, and in 1859 they came to Canada. He purchased 100 acres lot 19, con. 4, Minto, where they set. He later acquired 100 acres adjoining, making his holdings 200 acres. John Prain is one of the best known men in Wellington Co., Especially is he well known and respected in Minto Tp., where he held municipal office for nearly fifteen years. holding the offices successively of Councillor, Deputy Reeve, Reeve, and Warden of Wellington County; the latter for three years. In 1890 Mr. Prain retired from farming. He had previously become interested in the grain and produce business, and moved to Harriston that he could better attend to it. He was at he first and only salesman of the Minto and Arthur Butter and Cheese Mfg. Co. (Cotswold Factory). Aside from this he has practically retired, although he devotes some time to the Harriston High School, of which Board he is a member. He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian church, and in politics Mr. Prain is a Conservative.
