PADDOCK, CAPTAIN Thomas , was b. in Shropshire, Eng. He was a well educated man, and had been Capt. In the 53rd Foot Regiment which they raised in Shropshire Co., He came to Canada in 1837, on the ship "George Wilkinson," with his wife, four sons, and one dau. settling in Waterloo Co., where they lived for about three years. As the farm was covered with pine and there were no stump machines, he became disgusted and sold it, after which he came to Puslinch, and purchased from Alexander McNaughton, front and rear, lot 16, con. 1, and the next year purchasing for Thomas Jr., rear 12 , con. 1. Later he bought rear 13, con. 1, about 45 acres from one McNeil who was a squatter. About 45 acres were cleared, on lot 16, and Mr. Paddock finished the work. Mr. Paddock was a pensioner, and received money from Eng. He had been acquainted there with Sir John Colborne, who was Governor at the time he came to Canada. After some time he purchased a threshing machine form Lutz and Cook , and with his eldest sons, threshed in the district, teaming the grain to Dundas. He has a lot of lumber at Anderson's mill near Galt, and when he came to Puslinch, he sold it to finish the log church on lot 16, con. 1. He was a very successful man; a member of the Eng. church, which he attended at Galt, and a Conservative in politics. He m. Sarah Phillips in Eng., who d. at the age of 84. Issue: George, John, Thomas, Jr., Richard, and Mrs. Henry Bond, b. in Eng., and Jane (d.), b. in Canada. George was about 11 years of age when he came to Canada, and had attended school in England. He succeeded to front lot 16, con. 1, where he lived until his death. He was a member of the Eng. church, but attended the Presbyterian church under the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Meldrum. In politics, he was a Conservative. He was a very successful man, and noted for his good horses, with which he won prizes at several fairs. He was killed in 1881, from injuries received by being thrown from a horse, and left his widow in comfortable circumstances. He m. first, Catharine Bond of Beverly Tp. Issue: Mrs. Innis, Toronto. His second wife, Jane Malloy, is still living. Issue: William, Thomas, on the homestead with his mother; George, in Hespler; James, in N.-W.; Joshua, Josiah, N.-W.; Archibald, Sarah, and Ann. William set. on lot 12, con. 2, in 1898, where he carries on mixed farming. He has been Road Commissioner for some years, and is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. He m. Janet McCormick. Issue: John William and George Alexander.

John b. in 1823, d. in 1899, age 76 years. He was about nine years of age when he came to Canada with his parents. He had some schooling in Eng. He succeeded to front lot 15, con. 1, where he lived until his death. He was a member of the English church, but attended the Methodist. In politics he was a Conservative, but never sought nor held office. He m. Mary Martin, whose brother William was the U.S. Ambassador to China, and is now Consul General. Issue: William H., John ,Frank, and Sidney, in Man., and Blanche, George, and Benjamin, on the homestead with their mother who is still living. Thomas Jr., came to Canada with his father when about 6 years of age.

Rear lots 12 and 13, con. 1, were purchased by his father for him, and he cleared them himself. He retired from active business in 1895. He is a member of the English church and an Independent Conservative in politics. He has never sought or held office. In 1853, he m. Eliza Ann Mallet. Issue: Mrs. John Scott, of Manitoulin Island, where they have a ranch of 1,700 acres, and sawmill; Mrs. John Gilchrist, Puslinch; Mrs. Wm. Eakins (d.); Mrs. Thomas Eakins, and Mrs. Christian Gregor.

Richard (d.), was about three years old when he came to Canada with his parents. He succeeded to rear lots 15 and 16, con. 1, where he lived until his death in 1895, age 66. He was what one might term a gentleman farmer. He was very successful, with a great deal of taste, and kept his place in excellent condition. He kept fine horses which were in great demand by American settlers. He was a member of the Eng. church, which he frequently attended at Galt, and was also an attendant of Knox church, under Mr. Meldrum's pastorate. In politics he was a Conservative, but never sought nor held office of any kind. He m. Grace McPhatter, dau. of Matthew McPhatter. Issue: Thomas, Matthew (d.); Richard, on lot 15, con. 2; Mrs. Allan Stewart, Puslinch; Mrs. Donald McMillan, Puslinch; Mrs. Arch. McMillan, Puslinch; Edward, Waterloo Co.; Mrs. James Starkey, Arkell; Fred. W., Nelson, Mrs. Alex. Ramsay, Puslinch; George, and Charlotte.

Thomas, owns lot 17, rear Gore; Fred, Nelson and George are on the homestead with their mother.
