OAKES, Jonathan, Sr. (d.), b. Suffolk, Eng., 1791; d. 1878, age 87 years. He m. Diana Short and they came with their family to Canada in 1836, set. in Guelph Tp. They were members of the Church of England. Issue: Jonathan Jr., John, George Robert, James Sr., Mrs. Thatcher, later Mrs. David Day; and Mrs. Robert Barber.

Jonathan, Jr., b. Suffolk, Eng., 1821, came to Canada with his parents at the age of fifteen. He started with nothing, and worked the first year for a barrel of flour. In 1838 he set. on lot 25, con. 5 (225 acres), Eramosa Tp., and this place he cleared and brought to a high state of cultivation, erecting on it a good brick house, which took the place of the original log house, as well as large barns and out-buildings. He also beautified the place with a handsome row of maples along the side of the road in front of the farm, making it one of the most attractive homesteads in this part of Eramosa. While Mr. Oakes never sought municipal honours, he was a well-known man in the county, and was held in as high esteem as any citizen of Eramosa, where be lived for sixty-six years. He passed away at the homestead in 1904, aged 83 years. He m. Emma, dau. of the late Jas. Benham, who survives him. Issue: Lydia, James, Mrs. Arch. Irvin, Mrs. George Nelson, Guelph City; Mrs. William Dickieson, Henry, Charles (d. age 25). Of this family: James, Jr.; b. on the old homestead, con. 5, has always lived in Eramosa, where he now owns 147 acres, lot 14, con. 4, on which he resides. He is one of the substantial citizens of the township. He m. Mary Scarrow. Issue: Hazel, Harold, Charles and Frederick.

Henry m. Maggie Burnett, and owns the old homestead on con. 5, settled on by his father in 1838. He is a leading farmer. Issue: Agnes and Charles.

John, the second son of Jonathan Oakes, Sr., m. Elizabeth Beck. He ran the farm for his father in Guelph Tp. for some years, and d. at Everton, where he was buried. Issue: Jonathan 3rd, Mrs. John Everett, set. Everton; Mrs. Henry Head, N. Dakota; Joseph, Mrs. Frank D. Ingersoll; George, m. Ann Martin, set. Chicago; Henry, Mrs. John Naismith, N.-W.; Annie and Mrs. S. McCutcheon, of Guelph City.
