NEWSTEAD, George A. (d.), was b. in Norfolk, Eng., 1818, d. in Guelph Tp., 1879, age 61 years. He was raised in Eng., and received a fair education. He came to Canada in 1839, and set. in Guelph Tp. He m. Elizabeth Taylor, dau. of the late John Taylor, and on the "Paisley Block" farm, they raised their family. Mrs. Newstead d. in 1901, age 69.

The late George Newstead was a member of the Pres. church, and while he never sought or held municipal office, he was an adherent of the Liberal party, and took a healthy interest in its affairs. He was an upright and honorable citizen, and had the confidence and respect of the whole community. His family are connected by marriage and otherwise, with many of the best families in the district. Issue: Mrs. William Austin, John, Mrs. John Pringle, Mrs. John Laidlaw, George, William, Archibald, and Mrs. Frank Laidlaw.

John, b. "Paisley Block," Guelph Tp., on the present "John Johnson" farm, was always a farmer. In about 1888, he purchased 66 2/3 acres lot 14, con. 13, Maryborough, where he has since lived. Since 1904, he has been Trustee of S.S. No. 6. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal, and has been on the committee of his party. He m. Mary Hadden. Issue: George E., Catharine l., and Emerson H.

George, m. Bella Carter, and lives in Eramosa, where he owns lot 27, con. 3. 100 acres. He and his family are members of the Speedside Congregational church, in which they take an active interest. In politics, he is a Liberal. Issue: Herbert, Annie M., and Thomas E.

William, m. Mary Derby, set. in Maryborough, where he owns 100 acres E. 1/2 , lot 8 con. 9. Issue: George W., and Catharine E. Both Mr. Newstead and his wife were born and raised on the historic "Paisley Block," Guelph Tp. They moved to Maryborough in 1891, where he is an influential and progressive citizen. The family are members of the Pres. church of which he is Chairman of the Board, at Moorefield, also School Trustee.
