MURRAY, John
(d.), was b. in Ire., in 1830. He was of Scotch descent, his parents coming to
Ireland at the time of the Insurrection. He m. Agnes Adamson in Scot., in 1856,
and in 1858, came to Canada with his wife and one child. For four years he
worked for farmers in King Tp., and then rented a farm on the 8th con. of that
township, where he stayed for four years, after which he rented a farm in
Vaughan Tp., for eight years. In 1878, his attention was drawn to the cheap
lands in Luther, and being anxious to provide for his sons, he located the
present homestead in West Luther, on lot 5, con. 3. There were no buildings
upon it, and only about 8 acres cleared. At the time of his death, he had 200
acres in the best state of cultivation, and modern buildings, all of which he
acquired by his own industry. Mr. Murray was instrumental in getting the first
drains in the township, they being known as the "Murray drains." He was a
Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He d. in 1898, while his wife predeceased him
in 1856, at the age of 27. Issue: Samuel, Stratford; James, Idaho; John, Parry
Sound; William, Luther; Robert (d. 28); Henry, and Mrs. James McQueen, Luther;
Alexander (d. 21); Joseph (d. 19); Andrew, Fort William, and David, on the
homestead.
