MURDOCH, Robert
, was b. Ayrshire, Scot., in 1835. He came to Canada at the age of four with
his father, who took up land in the "Paisley Block," where Robert remained one
year. He then went to Fergus, where he learned the harness maker's trade, at
which he was very successful for years. In 1874 he was induced to take up land
in Luther Tp. At that time his place was a wilderness and no improvements had
been made, while at present it is one of the best homes in Luther township. Mr.
Murdoch was Deputy Reeve one year and Reeve two years, without having had any
experience in the Council, and is said to have been one of the best that the
township has had. He has been very successful, acquiring all of his property by
his own industry. All of his family are well educated, two of his sons holding
positions with large salaries. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. By his first
marriage there were the following children: Mrs. Wm. McLuhan, Grey Co.; William
T., Iowa; Robert, Manager of the Earl Fruit Co., in Chicago; Alexander,
commission merchant, in Chicago; Hugh. In 1889 he m. Isabella Wood. Issue;
Jennie, at home.
Hugh, works the homestead, and has a fine herd of Polled Angus cattle, which are the admiration of the entire neighborhood. Unlike his brothers, Hugh's tastes run along agricultural lines, and with the help of his father, he bids fair to be one of the most successful men in the district.
