MORRISON, Robert,
is a son of the late Robert Morrison, who was one of the first Reeves
in the township of Arthur, and was in County Council for some years, and J. P.
Robert, was b. in Halton Co., in 1844, and came to Arthur Tp., in 1839 with his
parents, who took up bush land from the Crown, part of their property being
grants. They struggled alone for some years, enduring all the hardships in
connection with pioneer life, suffering from the frosts of the early days. They
used to get all their supplies from Fergus, taking one week to go to Fergus and
return, with oxen. On the trip they were obliged to lie down when night came
on, leaving their oxen to graze in the bush, having bells on them, so that they
could locate them in the morning. Mr. Morrison’s brother, left several times
after coming, but afterwards decided to stay. Mrs. Morrison says that several
times they shed tears after coming in, it was so hard to get along. The
property today is worth $10,000, showing that by hard work, and good
management, success can be achieved in Canada. The Morrisons never received any
financial aid, and made all by their own exertions. Mr. Morrison is now
practically retired from active life, with the respect and esteem of the entire
community. He m. Jane Munns, in 1870. Issue: Arthur, Riverstown; Ann, Sault
Ste. Marie; Mrs. Hugh Thompson, Arthur; Mary E., at home, and Robert at home.
