MITCHELL, James,
was b. Co. Armagh, Ire., in 1831, and came to Canada when about 15
years of age. After staying a short time in Montague Tp. he came to Maryborough
in the late summer of 1850, in advance of his father, and took up 200 acres lot
13, con. 15, later giving the west half to his father. He cleared all of this
land. He kept thoroughbred cattle for some time, feeding for the domestic
market. He was a Trustee for No. 14 S.S. for nine years, and is a member of the
English church, and a strong Conservative. In 1854 he m. Elizabeth Elliot (d.),
and later Margaret Shortreed, nee Hays, of Wallace. His children are Mrs.
Robert Kidney, Peel Tp.; William, on the homestead; Robert, Mrs. James Corbitt,
Peel; Mrs. John Kidney, Drayton; Mrs. George Smith, Maryborough, and Albert.
William was b. on the homestead where he has always lived. He attended school at No 14, with the first teacher, Edward Henry John Duncan. He purchased the homestead in 1899 and has since worked it., carrying on mixed farming. He is a member of the English church, and a Conservative. He m. Elizabeth A. Oxby, dau. of the late Wm. Oxby. Issue: William Allan and James Harman. Robert, m. Elizabeth , dau. of William Benson, and owns and works the west half lot 16, con. 14. Albert J. m.
