McDONALD, Hugh , b. parish of Laggan, Inverness-shire, Scot., 1801, d. in Eramosa, 1857, age 56. He m. Catherine Kennedy, in Scot. She d. 1884, age 76. The late Hugh McDonald, was well educated and was Major in the 42nd Highlanders. He was afterwards cashier in the Fairbairn Woolen Mills, Leeds, and held this position until he left Scotland. He came to Canada with his family in 1836, and purchased and set. On 200 acres of land, Lot 26, Concession 1, Eramosa Tp. This farm he had cleared, and during the twenty-one years he lived there, he took an active interest in the infant settlement. He was on of the promoters of the first Presbyterian church, and before it was built, the family used to walk to Fergus to worship. His son, David K. McDonald, has in his possession the miniature family portraits painted on ivory, about seventy years ago. They are rare works of art, and must have cost a large sum of money. These are an indication of a refined taste, and of the position occupied by the family in Scot. Issue: Mrs. James Laird (d.); Kenneth (d.); Mrs. William Benham, Hugh, Jr. (d. age 34); Mrs. James Quarry (d.); Robert (d.); David K., Mrs. Christopher Quarry, and Mrs. Wm. Armstrong.

David K., was b. 1843 on the Eramosa homestead, where he has always lived, and which he owns. Few places in Eramosa are more attractive, and few citizens are held in higher esteem, than its owner. He has been School Trustee for over 30 years, and for some years has been P.M. at Speedside. Besides the homestead farm, he is the owner of 250 acres of land in the "Paisley Block" which latter farm is operated by his sons, Hugh and Adam. In 1874, Mr. McDonald m. Elizabeth, dau. of John Armstrong of Missouri, U.S.A., formerly of Eramosa, she d. in 1884. Issue: Catharine, Hugh, Adam, David, Margaret, Elizabeth, and William J.

The family are Presbyterians, and in politics, Mr. McDonald is a Conservative.
