McDIARMID, John
(d.), b. near Loch Rannoch, Perthshire, Scot., in 1803, d. in 1898, age 95. He
m. Margaret Stewart, in Scot., and came to New York State, where he remained
for a few years, coming to Canada and Puslinch in 1833, at the same time as
Allan Stewart, and set. on lot 25, con. 1. He later sold it and purchased lot
24, where he lived until his death. At the time of purchase, there was not a
tree cut on either place. His education was above the average of that time. He
was a steady worker, always at home. He was an Elder of Duff’s Church in 1856,
when the new church was built. Several times Trustee of S.S. No. 6. In politics
he was a Liberal. Issue: Mrs. Donald McKenzie, Bruce Co.; Duncan (d.);
Alexander (d.); Archibald, Bruce Co.; Donald Dumfries Tp.; Allan, in Ass’a;
John, and Hugh, in Manitoba.
John, was b. and raised on lot 24, con. 1. Upon commencing for himself, he purchased a farm in Dumfries, which he worked for five years, when he sold it, and then with his brother, bought 100 acres, lot 20, con. 7, where he stayed for six years, until he succeeded to the homestead, lot 24, con 1, where he has since resided, still owning lot 20. He carried on mixed farming. Mr. McDiarmid is a man of strong convictions, a steady worker, and a substantial citizen of the community. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal.
