MACDONALD, Archibald
(d.). Archibald Macdonald, the eldest son of Archibald Macdonald, formerly a
Captain in the 35th Foot, and Katherine his wife, a daughter of Captain the
Hon. William Boswell, R.N., and grandson of Capt. John Macdonald, of Gart,
Callender, Scotland, was born at Marina Cobourg in 1823, and was educated at
the Grammar School there and at Victoria College. He studied law, and was
called to the Bar in 1844; practised at Cobourg, where he was also Master in
Chancery. He married the daughter of the Rev. David Wright, of the Methodist
church, who predeceased him. In September 1854, he was appointed judge of the
County Court of Wellington and Surrogate Judge, and subsequently Local Judge of
the High Court of Justice. Resigned and pensioned in 1880, and died on 5th
April 1881, leaving three sons and one daughter, Colonel A. H. Macdonald, K.C.,
Guelph; A. A. Macdonald, M.D., Toronto; Mrs. B. R. McConkey, of Guelph, and
Captain Walter Macdonald, B.C.L., now deceased. He was Chairman of the Board of
Education at Guelph for many years, during which the educational system of the
town was largely improved. Judge Macdonald enjoyed to the greatest extent the
confidence and regard of the people of the county of Wellington and was
universally regretted. Member of St. George's Church, Guelph, and took a large
part in building the present church.
