LOWES, John W. (d.). The late John Wasdale Lowes, the pioneer of this family in Canada, was b. in Cumberland, Eng., in 1808, and came to Canada at the age of 19, settling, first at Little York, and later at Cavan, Durham Co. He m. Martha McCarroll, who was b. in 1810, and d. at the age of 66. Mr. Lowes was a Methodist and a Liberal in politics. He d. at the age of 89. Issue: William, John, Joseph, James W., Caleb, Matthew and Wesley.

Joseph Lowes, son of the above, was b. in Durham Co., Ont., and came to Peel in 1858, settling on lot 4, con. 14. At that time all wild land was known as "Queen's Bush." The farms purchased and cleared by Mr. Lowes, and his brothers James and Caleb, are now among the most valuable to be found in that section. He m. Hulda Sutton, who is living at the age of 65. Mr. Lowes was a Methodist, and a Liberal in politics. He never sought office, though often pressed to accept it. He was very temperate in his habits, and a man of great enterprise and business ability. He d. in 1874, at the early age of 43, esteemed by all who knew him. Issue: Susannah, Richard F., William J., Margaretta, Joseph H., and Edward F.

Susanna m. Joseph Green, and set. Wawanese

Richard F. m. Ann Brett. They have four children: Joseph H., Harold B., Ellen M. and Robert R. His fine farm of 150 acres on lot 4, con. 14, of Peel, is of a superior quality of soil and he follows mixed farming. He is a man of education, in touch with the affairs of the world generally. Like all of the Lowes family, he is a strong Liberal. In religion he is a Methodist.

William J. m. Nellie McFadden, and is a cattle dealer in the North-West.

Margaretta m. Clark Rogers, who is a large farmer in the North-West.

Joseph H. m. Harriet Messer, and is a missionary of the Methodist church at Hudson Bay.

Edward F. m. Mary Ann Sterne, and set. in the North-West, where he is engaged in ranching and farming.

James Wasdale Lowes, a son of the late John Wasdale Lowes, was b. in Canada in 1835, and came to Peel in 1861, settling on lot 4, con. 13. He carries on mixed farming and feeds cattle for export. Like his brothers, he is a successful farmer, and has acquired his property by his own industry and business ability. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal in politics. In 1863 he m. Sophia Kinnie. Issue: William , Ada, Florence, Bella, George, and Lula.

William has 150 acres on lots 4 and 5, con. 13. He is one of the most successful horse breeders in Peel, making a specialty of saddle horses and hunters; getting $300 for hunters, and has been awarded prizes wherever he has exhibited. He also breeds grade cattle and Leicester sheep, and does an extensive business in fattening Yorkshire hogs for the Canadian markets. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal, and holds the office of School Trustee. He m. Annie Hill. Issue: Norman, Lawrence, Lulu and Monte.

Ada, Florence and Lulu live at the old home.

Bella m. Geo. Liphart and set. in Berlin. George is unm., and is a dentist in Oklahoma.

Caleb Lowes, a son of the late John Wasdale Lowes, was b. in Cavan Tp., Canada, in 1838, and set. in Peel in 1858, on lot 4, con. 14. After his arrival he worked for others until he could earn enough money for the purchase of a yoke of oxen to start farming with for himself. At the present time he is the owner of 250 acres of the best land in Peel, known as the "Academy Farm," but has retired from farming and is living in Rothsay. While on the farm his specialty was pedigreed Durham cattle and fine horses. He is a member of the Methodist church, and has held all of its offices. In politics he is a Liberal. His is President of the Peel and Maryborough Ins. Co. He first m. Margaret Gibson, who d. in 1898, at the age of 56. Issue: Edgerton H., Oscar E., Herbert , William G., Hannah M., and John W. Subsequently he m. Hattie Howden his present wife.

Edgerton H., is a large farmer at Moose Jaw, and is unm. Oscar E. m. Kate Shaffer, and set. in Moose Jaw.

Herbert m. Emily McKnight, and is a successful dentist in Pontiac, Mich.

William G. is on the old homestead, where he keeps up the record of his family for the best methods of farming. He keeps high class Durham cattle, and makes a specialty of feeding cattle for export. He has fine buildings and a first-class farm. He m. Minnie Nicholson.

Hannah m. John H. Winn, and lives in Moose Jaw.

John W. carries on a general merchandise business in Saskatchewan, and is unm.
