LIVINGSTONE, John
. The subject of this sketch is one of the most respected citizens of North
Wellington. He was b. in Co. Down, Ire., Dec 18, 1829, and was there raised and
educated. In 1855, he came to Canada, and assisted in the survey of the village
of Harriston which had been set. the previous year. He entered the employ of
Archibald Harrison, and assisted in cutting out the Elora and Saugeen road, and
later, had charge of the first sawmill established in Harriston. He was
appointed the first Bailiff of Minto, and held the office for many years. In
this capacity he had the reputation of "tempering justice with mercy," and
avoiding anything like oppression, thus obtaining the best results, and winning
the full confidence and respect of all classes of people, which he has always
enjoyed. He was also an auctioneer for years, and this occupation made his name
a household word throughout the district. In 1890 he was appointed Division
Court Clerk, which office he still holds. He has also been a member of the High
School Board for years. He has been a very successful man, and is one of the
most useful and respected citizens of Harriston, in which vicinity he has lived
for over half a century. He owns a farm in the tenth concession, which is
operated by his son, Captain Charles E. Livingstone. For his first wife, he m.
