KILGOUR, James
, (d.), b. 1812, Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, Scot.,: d. 1893, age 80. He had
the misfortune in early life to lose his leg. After securing a liberal
education, he taught for some years in Scotland. In 1845, with his wife and
two boys, J.W. and J.M. (d.), he emigrated to Canada and located in Eramosa,
where he took up lot 11, con. 5, upon which he lived for twenty-eight years.
He taught school for one years in 1848, and in 1857 he was appointed Local
Superintendent of Education, and subsequently Public School Inspector for the
southern half of Wellington Co., in which work he continued for twenty-one
years, when he retired. He was also a member of the Board of Examiners for
teachers. After he gave up the inspectorship he was for some years an active
member of the Guelph School Board.
From early manhood Mr. Kilgour was an active worker and preacher among the Disciples of Christ, and after his removal to Guelph he was, until he retired from active life, pastor of the Church of Christ there.
