ISLES, James
, was b. Angus, Scot., in 1821, and came to Canada in 1845. He worked as a mill
wright in Montreal for four years, and about 1857, came to Elora, where he
started a foundry for other parties. Deciding to own a home of his own, he went
up into the "Queen's Bush," and located the present farm, which he cleared, as
there was not a tree cut upon it at that time. Mr. Isles was a man of good
education, and look and active interest in educational matters. In the early
days he conducted night schools, free of charge, and encouraged the settles to
learn at night. He was a very liberal man, and willing to help any good cause.
He was School Trustee for 20 years, and was the first Township Clerk of Luther,
and Tax Collector. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. In 1848, he m. Mary Ann
Ellison, who d. in 1894, age 67. Issue: Charles E., and John, Mich.; Mrs. John
Reddie, Parry Sound; Mrs. James Ellis, Garafraxa; William, Mrs. Samuel
Sanaiderson, N.W.T., and James S., and David, Mich.
William, b. in 1859, on the homestead. He m. Elizabeth, eldest dau. of Thomas Robinson of Luther, in 1891. In religion he is a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, and is an active Conservative in politics. Issue: Mary Ann, Thomas R., James C., Rebecca, John S., David R., Ida E., and Willie.
