HARPER, Richard
, the late Richard Harper was b. in Cornwall, Eng. He came to Canada in 1849,
and settled in Port Hope, and afterwards in Pilkington, on lot 10, con. 16,
clearing up his farm which was all bush at that time. He was a very successful
farmer, a sincere Christian and a man of energy and business ability. He was
Tax Collector of Pilkington for a number of years and Councillor for a number
of years. He was a Methodist, and a class leader in his church. In political
views he was a Liberal. He m. Jane Oliver Lemin, who d. in 1896, at the age of
81, while his death was a year later in 1897, at the age of 82. Issue: Richard,
m. Mary Amy (d.), and set. in Oakville; John, m. Ann Corchead, and set. in
Pilkington; Charles, m. Ann Burkholder, and set. in Woolwich; Mary Jane (d.),
m. Edward Gillespie, set. in Wesley Tp.; Aaron, m. Mary Oakman, and set. in
Pilkington; Moses, m. Miss Ford, and is living retired in Elora; Miriam, m.
William Pulkinghorn, and lives in Pilkington; Agnes (d.), m. Philip Lilles, and
lived in Manitoba; Annie m. Edward Worth, and lives in Elora.
Aaron Harper owns 100 acres on lot 13, con. 2, where he carries on mixed farming, and feeds cattle for export. Mr. Harper is a member of the council and a School Trustee. He is a Liberal in politics---independent and energetic in all things pertaining to the welfare of the township. He m. Mary Oakman. Issue: Regina, m. John French, and set. in Pilkington; William Emerson, Oliver A., in the Merchants' Bank at Elora; Wilbert and Eva May at home with their father. William Emerson Harper lives on the old homestead, lot 19 con. 6, where he is engaged in mixed farming, and feeds stock for export. He raises grade cattle. He is a Liberal in politics. He m.
