GOPSILL, George Drew
, was b. Kent, Eng., 1849. He is the son of the late John Gopsill, who was b.
in Hertfordshire, where the Gopsill estate is located, and now in possession of
his eldest surviving brother, Thomas Gopsill, Esq. George Drew Gopsill was
raised and educated in Hertfordshire, and in 1873 emigrated to the U.S., and
joined the first contingent of the N. W. M. P., at Fargo N. D., on their way to
the N.-W., and under the command of Col. French. Three years after he resigned
as Quartermaster Sergeant. In 1877 he took up a claim of 160 acres near
Battleford. He was later Lieut. in the Battleford Home Guards, and served in
the Riel Rebellion of 1885-6. He served from 1886 to 1891 as Farm Instructor
for the Dominion Government on Poundmaker’s Reservation, having several bands
of Indians under his supervision. In 1891 he went to Montana, where he owned
and ran a sheep ranch for seven years, finally selling out and coming to Guelph
Tp., where he purchased the "Old Parson’s Farm" (135 acres) on the Eramosa
road, where he has since resided. He also received a land grant for services in
the Riel Rebellion in the N.-W., which he still retains, owning 320 acres in
the N.-W.
He m., first Rachel Tining, in 1881. Issue; Thomas, Mary (d. young), Later he m. Eliza Applegarth. The family belong to the Church of England and in politics Mr. Gopsill is a Conservative.
