GHENT, Thomas , b. Devon, Eng., in 1835. He came to Canada when twenty-one years of age. He set. in Brampton and worked for farmers for eight years. In 1865 he came to Arthur and took up lot 5, O.S.R., cleared it and sold it. He then bought 100 acres, lot 5, con. 7; 30 acres of this was cleared when he took it. He put up modern buildings and improved it. When he came to Canada he was $30 in debt, and from that poor beginning he has accumulated a fine property. He has never received any financial assistance, and was never in a law suit. Mr. Ghent retired from the farm in 1898, and now lives in Mount Forest. He has the respect of the entire community. He has been a deacon in the Baptist church, and is a Liberal in politics. In 1862 he m. Margaret McGillivary, who d. in Mount Forest in 1901. Issue: Mrs. A. McTaggart, of Mount Forest, and John W.

John W., b. 1867, purchased the homestead when his father retired, and also owns the adjoining 100 acres, on lot 4, which he had previously purchased. He is a successful farmer; a Baptist and a Liberal. In 1895 he m. Christina Jack. Issue: Margaret, Ruth, Jessie, Philip, Thomas and Dorothy.
