FRIEND, Henry , was b. Devon, Eng., in 1837. He came to Canada in 1858, settling in Halton Co., where he worked for farmers for some years. Being attracted by the cheap lands in Arthur Tp. he decided to make a home for himself, so in 1871 he took up his present homestead of 200 acres, lot 15, con. 1, Arthur. Five acres were cleared on the one half and about 50 on the other. There were no buildings, and he had to put up his shanty, and contend with the frosts and other difficulties incidental to pioneer life in those early days. He now has fine buildings, implements, good stock, etc., and his land which at the time of purchase, was worth $13 per acre, is now assessed for $7,900.

Mr. Friend never received any financial aid, but has made all of his wealth by his own efforts. He is now practically retired from active life, with the respect of the entire community. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. In 1886 he m. Elizabeth Hall, who d. in 1900, at the age of 62. Issue: Matilda, George and William.
