FOX, Martin
, was b. in surburbs of Landau, Bavaria, Germany, in 1830. He was
a shoemaker by trade, at which he worked in Ohio, and New York, for four
years. In 1861 he came to Canada and kept a hotel in Waterloo Village for
two years, and then came to Drayton, where he kept a hotel until about 1890.
In 1874 he purchased 50 acres, part of lot 4, con. 11, Peel, which he still
owns. When Mr. Fox arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, his cash capital consisted of
2c. He has been very successful, although he has spent money liberally,
taking two trips to Germany, at a cost of $2,200. He is a Roman Catholic and
a Conservative. In 1861 he m. Mary Melchner, Of Waterloo, who is living, age
66. Issue: Mrs. John Neville, Colorado; George M., Joseph, Colorado;
Christina (d.) ; Lena and Annie.
George M. lived at home until he was 23 years old, when he spent three years in Utah and Colorado, returning in 1892. He has since that time been farming and taking contracts. He was two years on the School Board, four years in the Village Council, and two years Reeve, resigning in 1905. He has been Treasurer of Peel and Drayton Agr. Society for eight years. In 1895 he was appointed Lieut. of the 30th Battalion, and has taken an infantry course in London. For the last four years he has been Vice-Pres. of the Conservative Association of Drayton.
